An erection whilst wearing a codpiece

Ok renaissance people, how did this work? If you got a massive throbbing erection, wouldn’t everyone see it?

What if you were gay? Wasn’t it a crime to be gay in the Renaissance?

IIRC, the codpiece was usually sewn over a fairly hard leather "cup" not unlike an athletic jock. Other factors - cold rooms, even colder society, strict observance of courtly norms and etiquette - probably made the occurrence of an erection in public fairly infrequent.

Cod-pieces were often pretty large and rigid in structure. Hiding an erection in them wouldn’t be that difficult. As for sexuality, things actually became more oppressive in the post-renaissance period than before, especially in the Protestant part of Europe. The peak of convictions for “sexual depravity” was the 1600’s in Northern Europe. But yes, being gay in medieval or renaissance Europe wasn’t great.

R3 in his early 20's Leonardo was accused of and nearly jailed for sodomy. So to answer OP's question, during the Renaissance, sodomy was a crime (at least in Italy).

Well that just made it hotter.
