Cher seems very much the narcissist. I am sure it bothered her that Chasity was so homely. In other words, a "failed girl". That child must have felt that.

Both Chastity and Chaz have clarified Cher's anger about finding out Chastity was gay. What upset Cher wasn't just the fact that Chaz was a lesbian (at that time), but that Cher was the last to know. Chaz said she told Sonny she was gay when she was 11, after he caught her reading a LGBT-themed book, and he encouraged her to open up to him. Then, they both kept that secret from Cher for more than a decade. I think it was Sonny who outed Chaz to Cher during a fight. I'm guessing that he was making a point such as "Our kid likes me better and trusts me more. You don't even know her. She's gay; she even goes to gay bars." Also, the press frequently hounded Chastity and tried to out her. Cher may have "defended" Chastity to the press, unknowingly lying about Chastity. And she must have thought it looked bad that Chastity was afraid to come out to her, even though she had ben out to Sonny since she was a child.

Even if Cher did act badly, she's obviously evolved over the years, so I wouldn't be mad at her. Especially now after all of her support for the LGBT community.

I do remember her discussing this with Charlie Rose. Cher felt like she may have done something wrong by having such a big career and somehow that affected Chastity.

She said people would say how can you be shocked someone is gay.....you're Cher. She said it was more guilt over things she felt she didn't do for her kids even if that was illogical and against science it was how she felt. Her guilt overrode her feelings.

What's upsetting to me, isn't the fact that Cher was initially upset that Chaz was Gay. That's a normal parental reaction and nothing new to most of us.

I take issue with Cher IMMEDIATELY following up her disappointment that she had a lesbian daughter, with convincing her that she needed to transition! So basically, she couldn't process the fact that she had a butch gay daughter. So she started throwing transgenderism at her until she finally convinced her that she was really a "Straight Man".

I once saw Joan Rivers asked about by a TMZ type ambush reporter after she was coming from some event. She and Cher were friends. The reporter asked her how Cher was doing with it all. Rivers said something like it's awful. She's really having a hard time with all this.

No, it doesn't sound like that to me, R31. It sounds like Chaz was hinting about it, maybe testing the waters with Cher, but afraid of committing to the idea publicly. Cher was trying to be a good mother, and asking "Is that what you want?", encouraging her child to be honest and open with her. Chaz came out as trans only when he was ready. Perhaps he didn't quite trust Cher enough to tell her in private long before he went public. (Maybe she has a big mouth.)

The real question here is why hadn't Chaz changed his voicemail message once he transitioned. Wouldn't that be one of the first things you'd do if you wanted to be referred to as "he" and "Chaz?"

I blame this all on Kathy Griffin. She and Cher are allegedly BFFFFs, and heavens knows Kathy can't keep her trap shut about anything. Chaz might've purposely not told Cher because she knew she'd in turn tell Kathy, and it would get used in a stand-up special.

And R4 is dead wrong, she didn't just come to terms with it recently after Chaz transitioned, she came to terms with her being lesbian by 1996 per Chaz's own book. There's a HuffPo article from 2013 where Cher says she had come to terms with Chaz transitioning, too. This was all over and done with years ago.

I thought it was more inline with what r27 wrote, I read chaz’s book and don’t remember anything about sonny catching Chaz reading a book about lgbt issues, but I do remember that Cher was pissed that Chaz had told sonny and his wife, Cher’s mother and sister and maybe sonny's mother before she told Cher.

I read Chastity's book Family Outing when I was a teen. There were a lot of pages devoted to how frustrated Cher was that Chastity didn't want to dress up in pretty dresses and preferred to dress like a tomboy. Between that and everything else, there's no way that Cher didn't know her daughter was a lesbian.

Cher has long been a dear dear friend. Who is this Debra Messing? I've never heard of her.

Parents all have visions of how their kids will turn out, or what they’ll be. They also don’t want their kids to have a hard time in life. I’m sure parents go through a lot of emotions, loss among them, and fear of the unknown or fear for safety. Throwing a kid out of the house is unacceptable under any circumstances, but the fact that a parent comes around to acceptance - however they get there - means a lot. I can’t fault Cher. She has a persona that we all assume is her, but in private she’s still a parent who will inevitably feel some complex emotions, and who we don’t really know.

Would Cher have still come around if Chastity had stayed a lesbian? That's the question.
