Pentagon officials reportedly 'stunned' as acting Defense secretary halts Biden transition briefings

Pentagon officials have been left "stunned" after acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller ordered a "Pentagon-wide halt to cooperation" with President-elect Joe Biden's transition, Axios reports.

Miller, according to the report, on Thursday night ordered officials to cancel transition meetings that had previously been scheduled, "which stunned officials throughout the Pentagon." Officials reportedly were not clear on what led to the decision, and Axios says a top Biden official wasn't aware of the order.

A senior Defense Department official told Axios this was a "simple delay of the last few scheduled meetings until after the new year," saying they had "fewer than two dozen remaining meetings on the schedule today and next week" and staff was "overwhelmed by the number of meetings." The official added, "With the holidays we are taking a knee for two weeks. We are still committed to a productive transition."

But Axios writes that officials "across the Defense Department" were shocked by the move, which comes after President Trump delayed the official beginning of Biden's transition while refusing to accept the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The Trump junta doesn't want the full extent of its deliberate sabotage of U.S. security and military infrastructure to be revealed until after Biden is sworn in - so he can promptly be blamed for it.

Surprise! Trump is retreating into his bubble of vindictiveness and delusion.

by Anonymousreply 2December 18, 2020 5:34 PM

Are they all "stunned" enough to strike en masse?

by Anonymousreply 3December 18, 2020 5:36 PM

This is more than vindictive.

Trump doesn't intend to relinquish power.

It shows that he's digging in his heels, and intends to stay in the White House.

And this totally fits in with recent reports.

Fuck off, r4.

Care to respond to the fact the Antrim County hand count confirmed the Dominion machine count?

Thought not.

Cunt.

It feels like Jan 20th is a year away. It's just fucking insanity...

by Anonymousreply 8December 18, 2020 5:56 PM

We've had a massive security breach and the President tweets about a Russian hoax.

Now, the Pentagon doesn't want Biden to know anything.

It sure sounds like Trump is doing Putin's dirty work. How much is the Orange Menace being paid?

Dump wants to fire CIA director Haspel next week.

They're not planning a coup. They're covering their tracks.

by Anonymousreply 11December 18, 2020 8:39 PM

This is of a piece with his refusing to authorize distribution of the vaccine. Total abnegation of responsibility, partly out of spite, partly out of love of chaos (and the usual Republican desire to keep government from doing anything but enrich the superrich).

by Anonymousreply 12December 18, 2020 8:49 PM

How soon do you think Trump will fly the Russian flag over the White House?

Tick tock, tick tock.

by Anonymousreply 13December 18, 2020 9:01 PM

Once Trump is out of office the FBI needs to conduct a new investigation on Trump ties to Russia because there is obviously a shit load of stuff there. Then they can charge him with treason.

This past summer, I saw a CVS employee confront a shoplifter. Just verbally, mind you. The guy went on a mini-spree of knocking shit off shelves and POS displays before he ran out of the store.

Trump is doing something similar. What a scumbag.

by Anonymousreply 15December 18, 2020 10:10 PM

No need, r14. The Mueller report as it stands contains substantial grounds for prosecution, which is why Bill Barr tried so hard to suppress it.

There are rumors going around information given in these briefings was showing up in Chinese intelligence traffic.

by Anonymousreply 17December 22, 2020 8:27 PM

This guy has still not publicly commented as far as I can tell. We finally heard from the Army Sec, and the Capitol Hill Chief (former) but this guy is still mum.

It's a little unnerving.

by Anonymousreply 18January 15, 2021 8:29 AM

DId the transition meetings ever resume?

by Anonymousreply 19January 15, 2021 8:31 AM

Ok, looks like he did release a short, generic letter stating, at the least, that Biden will be president.

Well that's a relief. He should still have to face questions. It's not like it's his private military. That is public job and has to come with some public accountability:

“Yesterday’s violence at the Capitol was reprehensible and contrary to the tenets of the United States Constitution. In the midst of this tragedy, I was proud of the professionalism of our Department of Defense personnel. I want to specifically recognize the service of the District of Columbia National Guard. They performed with honor, integrity, and alacrity to protect people and property from unlawful acts.

“Our Republic may have been disrupted yesterday, but the resolve of our legislators to conduct the people’s business did not waver. Due to their efforts, supported by local and federal law enforcement and the National Guard, the attempts of those who tried to stop our government from functioning failed.

“I strongly condemn these acts of violence against our democracy. I, and the people I lead in the Department of Defense, continue to perform our duties in accordance with our oath of office, and will execute the time-honored peaceful transition of power to President-elect Biden on January 20.”

by Anonymousreply 20January 15, 2021 8:38 AM

I don't see where he answered any questions about the chain of events that led up to the delay in action by the DOD.

by Anonymousreply 21January 15, 2021 8:38 AM

Hope they sort this out

by Anonymousreply 22January 15, 2021 10:20 AM

Defense Secretary Chris Miller is a brownshirt.
