I don't think any real porn star has "made it" as a "legit actor" although some of them have found work outside of porn. People like Traci Lords only get cast for their novelty star value, not due to any acting talent because NO porn star has ever had any real acting talent.

Star Trek gladiator
In the early 1980s, after her career faltered, actress Angelique Pettyjohn, who played Shahna, started making softcore and then hardcore porn films. She stopped that when she realized she could make more money appearing at sci-fi conventions after the popularity of the Star Trek franchise grew due to the release of the films. As part of her appearances, she posed for and sold two versions of a poster as her Shahna character: One in her silver costume and one where she is totally nude.

Stormy Daniels (a big name and fan favorite for many porn fans during her heyday in the 2000's and now world famous due to Trump) was in Knocked UP and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Ginger Lynn (one of the top porn women of 80's) made appearances in mainstream films that you would recognize including Young Guns 2 and The Devils Rejects. Nina Hartley (another top billed starlet of the 80's) was given a very visible role in Boogie Nights. The infamous Ron Jeremy was not surprisingly chosen for a ton of parts in many indie flicks although I don't recognize any of them. Simon Rex (of MTV fame) was in the Scary Movie sequels. Veronica Hart (one of the most famous Golden Age ladies), like Nina, was in Boogie Nights and also Magnolia.

No REAL actor, no actor with TALENT, ends up sucking and fucking for a living. And all this crap about Sylvester Stallone being a "porn star." R34, you sound very sheltered and quite simple. Performing sex work DOES NOT mean that one has no other talents! It simply means that one has found a way to make money & achieve fame of some sort quickly.
Classic Adult Films (pre VHS/Internet) were actual productions with a story-line, lots of dialogue and good amount of acting involved. I stand by my statement that Jamie Gillis, John Leslie & Veronica Hart were all decent actors with stage experience, that could have made it in legitimate film/TV/stage, had they had the right breaks.

by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 17, 2020 9:35 PM |
Traci Lords was lucky to have the mainstream career that she had. Her sheer determination to make it far outweighed any talent she had/has. The novelty of the "victimized" underage porn star got her foot the door and she ran with it.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 17, 2020 9:38 PM |
I think the stigma around having done porn is ending. Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton made a career out of that. Plus all those actresses who got "leaked" yet still had film offers afterwards. And now we're seeing former teen stars doing OnlyFans and still getting work. Cardi B was as stripper and prostitute and got a record deal.
And apart from Traci Lords. You had Sasha Grey and James Deen do some non-porn work. Blake Mitchell and Sean Ford seem to be convinced they can do it too.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 17, 2020 9:44 PM |
Traci was smart to turn of legal age, open her own production company, make a few movies, and then tell the authorities that she was underage in all the other porn she made for other studios. She made a shit ton of money and then got out of the business. She's a pretty good actress, too. She was in an indie horror comedy called Excision that I really liked and she was wonderful in it.
Ginger Lynn's also proven herself as being more than just a body and was funny in the Vice Academy movies and still shows up in small roles in lot of low budget movies. She has some comedic chops.

With Only Fans and the fact that just about everyone under 35 has their own nudes floating out there from various dating apps and DMs, there might start to be a lot less controversy about nudity and sex. I see people on Instagram who show people their ass or pose topless and they have normal, respectable jobs and no one seems to shame them or get them fired or anything of that sort. Things might be changing and I say it's high time it does. This country's weird puritanical ideas of sex and nudity have been dragging us down for ages.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 17, 2020 9:57 PM |
It's weird how actors and models can sell an image of sexuality and be alright. But if they have done any work actually having sex it's an issue. Halle Berry shows her boobs in a movie and does ton of sex scenes and it's "artistic" but if she uploaded a video of herself stripping and having sex it's wrong?
The US has a weird puritanical view of sex. We sexualize everything and everyone but shame sex at the same time.

The late Spalding Gray made some hard core porn flicks in the 70’s, though they are pretty hard to locate today. One was called “Farmer’s Daughters” which was directed by and co-starred Zebedy Colt. Colt, a former legit child actor called Edward Earle Marsh, was gay but somehow ended up in straight porn.
Then there was “Malo” discussed here a year or so ago. Malo was a classically trained New York stage actor named Arnaldo Santana. To make cash he did three gay porn flicks for InHand with Jack Wrangler as a sexy muscle power bottom. Then went on to supporting roles in two Al Pacino movies: “Scarface” and “Cruising”.

r16 That was George Kennedy, big difference, and kinda the main guy of the Airport anthology.
Sibel Kekili has been mentioned, she e.g. played in German and international classic Gegen die Wand as female lead, I guess it is synchronized in English, Fatih Akin's most important work and art. Peter Bond was one of the two hosts of German Wheel of Fortune, I think he had fled from the GDR, had a pretty good career as host and other celebrity venues, and e.g. played a gay guy in German gay sitcom Bewegte Männer, which was made after the German movie Hit Der Bewegte Mann, gay story. Magdelene St Michaels was a stage actress and a bit movie and TV before becoming adult actress. That mom from That 70s Show, who had been on Charlie's Angels, had a pretty big softcore career in between, was a main competitor of Shannon Tweed. I guess most adult actresses who landed in the California porn scene had come to Hollywood with the dreams of becoming actresses or commercial models.
Kinda ridiculous that so many actresses have worked as prostitutes and strippers, yet being in adult movies is so much more of a hindrance also for actresses, when the former are much more degrading. Maitland Ward has become a kinda busy porn star. Sunny Lane was an Olympian ice skater in her youth, was en route to.

Chuck Vincent filmed a lot of those really great porn crossovers. Like "In Love", and "Bordello: House of the Rising Sun". Both are technically hardcore movies, both with excellent production values and well-written characters. Beth Broderick stars in both In Love and Bordello in a non-sexual role. The structure of the films are more like European art movies, a world away from video porn. He also moved over to non-porn B-movies in the mid 80s like "Preppies" and "Hollywood Hot Tubs", which are actually better quality than they sound.

Here's a great example of the sort of well produced Classic Adult Films I discussed at R15, R35. "Wanda Whips Wall Street" (starring Veronica Hart & Jamie Gilis) from 1982 is hilarious and (minus the sex scenes) just as entertaining as any of the mainstream comedies of the day.

The photo at R88 has been around a very, very long time. I'm talking about Pre-Photoshop. The original photo print went up for auction years ago. However, the story the story surrounding it has multiple variations. We will never know if it's him, we just know it's someone at the least that looks like him. (But it's not photoshopped or anything of the sort.) I personally am split on it.

I don't think that it has been verified that he slept with men for money and roles. However, there have been many accounts from men and women that slept with him otherwise. Elizabeth Taylor flat out called him gay on video (3:15) years ago and she had done so previously. A few of his former costars and friends that actually knew him said he was into men or into men and women.

Then there is Jeff Griggs who after a stint as “Tony Sinatra” in gay porn got fired from a soap and has done all sorts of television and theater.
Jeff Stryker did some non-porn movies and television - mostly in Europe. “Zombie 4: After Death” he is the leading man. He is billed as Chuck Peyton his real name.
Gregg Araki likes to put gay porn stars in bit roles like Rex Chandler in “Doom Generation”.

His porn past didn't seem to haunt him but I guess because the target demo for what he was doing was teens and college kids so they didn't care. Jenny Mccarthy and Carmen Electra were on MTV too and they were Playmates. Carmen even tried to do music with Prince of all people backing her.
Also Pam Anderson and Jane Seymour posed nude and had decent film careers. Jane played the lead in the super wholesome vaguely Christian show Dr Quinn

LOL @ R100
There is a huge difference between making a jack off video and posing nude for Playboy.
Especially when the jack off video is aimed at gay men.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | December 18, 2020 12:55 PM |
R102 Yes and especially the homophobia double standard. I'm sure even Pam and Carmen could have gotten away with fingering themselves on video and been fine because straight men find them hot. Traci's film career was because of horny straight men and also gay men who liked her sluttiness. Simon is an exception but only because nobody knew until much later.
Vanessa Williams also got a film and music career even after photos surfaced of her ass getting eaten by a woman. But she was beautiful and sexy and actually had talent.

I dont buy that everyone who is promiscuous or is a sex worker is fucked up. There really exist people who have no shame about their sexuality and see it as a skill/talent to profit from. In some ancient cultures prostitutes were highly revered. Its this puritanical notion about sex and control over women's bodies that influences our perception that a woman has to be damaged to be sexually adventurous and engaged in sex work

Traci never seemed to be able to let go and look 'natural' on screen. It worked when she was playing campy, vampy characters like in Crybaby and some of her TV guest spots, but made her look awkward most of the other times. The recent podcast about her (Once Upon A Time… In The Valley) had a film critic that mentioned her similar affectations in her on-screen performances.
I've heard she was very good in the movie Excision, but I've never caught that one yet.

R100, there's a BIG DIFFERENCE for me between a person simply posing nude, as apposed to someone performing in hardcore porn with partners! If everyone who posed nude before fame were considered a "pornstar", than Marilyn Monroe & even Lucille Ball (see attachment) were porn starlets before they made it big!
Also, Carmen Electra tried to do music and worked with Prince BEFORE getting famous and posing for Playboy. I actually liked her song 'Everybody Get On Up' at the time it was released. It got a little air play on MTV, etc. I was a young pre-teen at the time it was released and remember having a conversation with my sister about it. Ironically we liked Carmen's rapping a lot, but felt she was done in Prince's lackluster production. The musical track he gave her to work with didn't sound like anything that was popular at that time.

It's so funny how Britney can have a borderline orgy in Slave 4 U, Beyoncé can pretend to go down on Jay-Z in the Deja Vu music video or how Miley Cyrus can wear a top of fake naked boobs and a dildo but you can't do actual sex on camera without shame.

[quote]A lot of those early porn actors like Jamie Gillis, John Leslie, Veronica Hart, etc were legitimate stage actors with real acting chops before their adult film careers! Porn was just something they fell into for various reasons.
Andrea True earned a music degree from Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt University) and had a cabaret act in New York before she started doing porn and subsequently hit it big with "More, More, More."

Thank you, R116. OP asked specifically about acting but you've reminded me that Andrea True probably (for a brief period) had the most successful post-porn career of any adult star.
Her first album was a masterpiece! She also had some great singles on her second project. Her rare 3rd album (only released in Europe) was a good, surprisingly socially-conscious collection of rock.

R7 Wade Nichols was actually quite a success story. Someone should make a movie of his life.
Was gay, started in gay porn, moved into straight porn as a "straight for pay" performer. Was actually a very good actor, managed to land a recurring role in daytime TV drama, and recorded an album in the 70s that produced two dance floor hits, "Like an Eagle" and "New York by Night."
by Anonymous | reply 128 | December 22, 2020 2:53 PM |
Traci was best in Excision. Maybe because the role was so far removed from the sexpot roles she usually plays. I always liked her, but never thought much of her as an actress, but that performance made me sit up and think she might have more in her than we initially thought. She's funny, pathetic, and heartbreaking all at once in that movie. That's no easy feat and she really pulled it off. I recommend the film. It's pretty disturbing, but does have a sense of humor.

I always considered her recurring role on Melrose Place to be the pinnacle of Traci's bonafide acting career. The show was at its peak (season 3) and was hugely popular among young viewers. Melrose sort of embodied "must see TV" at that time. I doubt that she was ever seen on a screen by a bigger audience. That said, her acting was terrible and she comes off as a very cold, evil, creepy individual in basically everything that I have ever watched her doing (which was the only element that she brought to her MP role that actually worked). Even on Celebrity Wife Swap, she was genuinely CREEPY IMO.

I met Traci twice - once at a book signing and again a few years ago at a convention. The book signing was for her autobiography Underneath It All, a VERY good read where she delves into her turbulent childhood, her porn career and subsequent legit career as an actress and a recording artist, her romantic relationships and more. She even goes into detail about her years living with Enos. She’s very nice in person.

Stallone did a softcore low budget movie he had no hardcore scenes. Sasha grey and James Deen were supposed to be the new “mainstream crossovers” but it never really happened and Deen went back to porn and grey has mostly faded.

As I recall Traci Lord incited a lot of rage when it came out that she did porn when she was underage. She lied about her age, therefore her movies were technically child porn. A lot of people got in serious trouble because of her. She was truly a cunt for that. She must have REALLY wanted to do porn. I guess she wanted the money., so she lied about her age to get into the business. What a cunt.

I don't recall anybody actually getting in much trouble over Tracy's porn career. Some money was lost in unsalable merchandise but I don't remember nobody who filmed or performed with her went to jail even with the explicit evidence of the crimes. Who would have looked at her and thought she wasn't what she said she was?
Of course that defense never works for ordinary men charged with a comparable crime.

I think the only person that served jail time was a guy was a distributor that was caught selling her tapes after it was revealed she was underage,
Still many others lived in fear of serious jail time for months and paid out big bucks on lawyers. Ginger Lynn said one director that shot a lot of Traci's movies had a nervous breakdown and had to institutionalized for a while.

Sean Paul Lockhart tried to be the male Traci Lords and branched into acting but it didn't last long. Even had a similar issue with claiming to be underage in his first couple of films though the production company Cobra claimed he brought them proof of his birth year being 1985 not 1986. So we don't know what to believe in regards to that.

The problem with Traci Lords, is Traci’s own story about her years in porn. Claiming her coke addiction started when the man named Jim South, signed her to his porn modeling agency. She lied. Every single person interviewed who had South as a manager called her out as a liar, for the very fact that if he sent drugged out models to clients and they couldn’t perform? He was out money and fees owed to him. She says she can’t recall most of that time due to a cocaine addiction, which I don’t believe happened until her final few months before the story came out she was underage. The podcast “Once Upon A Time In the Valley” about the whole scandal, plays audio footage of her during that era, and she’s obviously not coked out. She’s discussing business plans for her own production company, why her films outsell everyone else, and what it takes to do the job she’s in. She’s as cool as a cucumber and doesn’t appear strung out at all. Traci forever wants to control the narrative of what happened, and that’s not possible. Hundreds of people and dozens of companies were affected by her dishonesty, and she seems unable to understand that even though she had a clean slate. All of her old films considered contraband (except for one film she owned the rights to that was legal, and she made a lot of money off of selling it) she nearly destroyed the heterosexual porn world. She had an affect on the lives of other people, of course they deserve to have their story told, and she contradicts herself every time. Her own sister even spoke out to a newspaper calling her sister Traci a liar, when her book was published. The industry was absolutely blindsided. The aftermath of what happened, is the EXACT reason why they never would have entertained the idea of shooting someone underage. What saved the industry was that she had a federally issued passport, and that proved she had also fucked over the feds, and when that came to light, the harassment of the industry ceased and was over because they had been fooled as well.
All Traci Lords needs to ever do, is admit she was a brilliant business woman who fucked over an entire industry, and GOT AWAY WITH IT. Clean slate, no taxes owed, no jail time. Clever, cunning and smart. But her own “recollection” is self serving and dishonest. Again, that podcast plays audio of a very intelligent woman before the bust. And she’s not coked up.
