Dumbass of the Day

Australian Woman Dies Trying to Take Photo at Edge of 262-Foot Cliff

(CNN) — A woman in Australia fell off a cliff to her death on Saturday after trying to take a photo at the precarious location.

Rosy Loomba, 38, was with her husband and child when the accident occurred at Grampians National Park, in Australia's Victoria state, according to CNN affiliate Nine News. They were at Boroka Lookout, an overhang by the side of the cliff that has a panoramic view of the mountains and town below.

Police said Loomba climbed past safety barriers and warning signs, to pose on a rock for a photo when she tripped over the edge, falling more than 80 meters (about 262 feet) down the cliff face, according to Nine News.

Witnesses heard Loomba screaming, but were unable to help. Police and the state emergency service worked for six hours to scale the cliff and retrieve her body.

The viewing platform was closed throughout the afternoon during the retrieval process, but was reopened to the public by 10 p.m.

The lookout is a particularly popular photo spot; a quick search of the location tag on Instagram shows dozens of photos showing people at the cliffside, legs dangling over the edge, or balanced on a narrow rock near the edge. A few even filmed themselves doing backflips by the edge.

Local tour guide Graham Wood told Nine News he had warned his customers about the lookout just half an hour before Loomba's fall. "I made a comment to my customers, that this (people climbing over the barrier) happens all the time," he said. "And one of these days, someone's going to fall off. I'm sad that it's happened."

In the aftermath, authorities reminded the public to heed safety signs and guidelines, and that no photo is worth a person's life.

"We can't rope off every part of Victoria," said Police Minister Lisa Neville. "People have to take responsibility."

Did she have "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" on her MP3 player?

by Anonymousreply 1December 14, 2020 9:21 PM

That must have been very traumatic for her husband and child.

by Anonymousreply 2December 14, 2020 9:22 PM

...so we tanned her hide when she died, Clyde, and that's it hanging on the shed. All together now..."

by Anonymousreply 3December 14, 2020 9:26 PM

Good on you, mate.

by Anonymousreply 4December 14, 2020 9:28 PM

I suppose this is normal but the older I get, the greater fear of heights I have.

by Anonymousreply 5December 14, 2020 9:30 PM

Well...did she get the shot?? I want to see what was worth dying over.

by Anonymousreply 6December 14, 2020 9:31 PM

[quote] Witnesses heard Loomba screaming, but were unable to help.

So she was still alive and yelling for help?

by Anonymousreply 7December 14, 2020 9:34 PM

Is that "the incredible view" at op? Kinda meh if you ask me.

by Anonymousreply 8December 14, 2020 9:35 PM

Congratulations, r8: everyone is just SO impressed with how jaded you are.

A long ago vacation and we were staying in Yellowstone National Park at "Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone". I was up very early and drove out of the lodging area and went to the park overlook of the Falls. It was very quiet with a mist still in the area, but I was surprised to find that there was already a car in the parking lot when I arrived.

I parked the car and made my way along the short trail to the overlook point. I arrived to find an Asian family already there. Mother, father and at least one child.

Dad had climbed over the sturdy fence (which was there to prevent nitwits like him from falling), was hanging on to the fence with one hand as he leaned out over the drop to the canyon below and aimed his camera with one hand in an attempt to get a photo that was available on a multitude of postcards for a few cents from any gift shop in the park.

The article was way too long. All it needed to say was, "A woman."

by Anonymousreply 18December 14, 2020 10:38 PM

Rosy was a passionate woman.

She followed the philosophy of Auntie Name. 'Life is a banquet and sad little scared people are starving'.

by Anonymousreply 19December 14, 2020 10:41 PM

A warning to anyone who thought they'd come to Australia and try this: in Sydney the cliffs are almost exclusively sandstone, which the locals know is famous for having great slabs sheer off at the least provocation when it gets a bit tired. The authorities who build the guard rails are aware of this, so stay behind them.

[Australia will get you every which way but Covid.]

by Anonymousreply 20December 15, 2020 1:22 AM

Stupid fucking cow. The worst thing is that her stupidity tied up State Emergency Services for six hours retrieving her body which could have been spent helping other, probably less selfish, people.

Fuck off trying to get your Insta shot, fools.

by Anonymousreply 21December 15, 2020 1:28 AM

"Witnesses heard Loomba screaming"

Maybe that was when her husband was trying to push her off? I'm always suspicious when people take vacations to remote locales and something tragic happens. If you're going to kill someone you don't do it in the town square.

by Anonymousreply 22December 15, 2020 1:31 AM

R22 it’s a standard lookout / Insta location - just another case of narcissists trying for that perfect shot.

Fuck them.

by Anonymousreply 23December 15, 2020 1:36 AM

My parents have always told me if I don't have anything good to say about the dead, don't say anything at all.

This stupid axe-wound is dead. Good!

[quote]Police said Loomba climbed past safety barriers and warning signs, to pose on a rock for a photo

The police have to jeopardize their own lives in order to save the corpse of an idiot. They should have left her body there to be consumed by nature. Maybe that would deter some of these fools.

by Anonymousreply 30December 15, 2020 4:17 AM

People do this all of the time at Yosemite. Taking photos at the precarious edges of Half Dome, Vernal and Nevada Falls, etc. It's a miracle that more people don't die this way.

by Anonymousreply 31December 15, 2020 4:21 AM

by Anonymousreply 34December 15, 2020 5:29 AM

No, R33, it took place in Darwin, South Dakota.

by Anonymousreply 35December 15, 2020 5:33 AM

The husband did it.

I’ve seen a lot of crime shows.

by Anonymousreply 36December 15, 2020 5:50 AM

When we'd be taking pictures on overlooks, my dad would always laugh about the scene in Auntie Mame where her husband Beau takes a picture, and keeps going back further and further until he falls over a cliff. This reminded me of that.

by Anonymousreply 41December 15, 2020 8:15 AM

by Anonymousreply 42December 15, 2020 8:29 AM

The dead woman's surname is onamatopoeia for the sound of falling of a cliff.

Loomba, loomba, loomba.

by Anonymousreply 43December 15, 2020 9:29 AM

I had a feeling she was Indian.

Indians are always doing such things - must get the best photo to show all our extended family how wonderful we are!

by Anonymousreply 44December 15, 2020 9:31 AM

Would a person have done this 30-40 years ago? I don’t think so. She’s a product of the age we’re living in. People are more stupid, reckless and careless nowadays.

by Anonymousreply 45December 15, 2020 9:42 AM

Everyone is always trying to outdo each other with the "stupid axe wound gash cunt bitch fuck woman cunt" stuff but literally every person I have ever known like this, including my father, has been a guy. My mom got to the point that she just started filming when he would climb over security ropes and fences so she could have it on video in case the emergency services had to be called.

Part of the problem in modern cases is that so many people do these things to show off on IG or TikTok that it gives others a sense of security that really isn't there.

by Anonymousreply 46December 15, 2020 9:43 AM

[quote]Would a person have done this 30-40 years ago? I don’t think so.

Of course they did, you fucking moron. Over 1000 people have died in Yosemite alone in the last 200 years, many doing foolish things they weren't supposed to.

Christ, people say the dumbest fucking shit on DL just to sound like they have deep thoughts about the modern age.

by Anonymousreply 47December 15, 2020 9:45 AM

...since none of them could fly.

What a stupid sentence.

by Anonymousreply 56December 15, 2020 11:05 AM

I can only imagine how secretly delighted her husband must be. He probably prayed for “god” to kill the fat cow, and now she’s dead.

by Anonymousreply 57December 15, 2020 11:11 AM

[quote]They should have left her body there to be consumed by nature. Maybe that would deter some of these fools.

OMG, r1. How old are you?

by Anonymousreply 70December 15, 2020 11:57 AM

Don't be embarrassed, R59. There are a small number of ski resorts in the highlands of Victoria and New South Wales, but the continent is so old that the mountains have been eroded away to very short by world standards. Add to that the ridiculously short winters. Your well-to-do Australian keen on ski-ing always aims for the US or France/Switzerland once a year.

The highest mountain in Australia is 7310 feet, and there's only one that high (compared with Everest's 29,000 and around 14,000 at the major Swiss ski resorts).

by Anonymousreply 71December 15, 2020 11:59 AM

I'm not who you refer to as fucking moron but your post is stupid since you tell us over 1K people have died in Yosemite (where this incident did not take place, of course), in 200 years, "many" doing foolish things. But how many people actually died doing "foolish" things? Can you pull that statistic out of your ass, because that's the important one. I assume people die there from falls climbing El Capitan, or from heart attacks, and strokes, or food poisoning, or car accidents, or are murdered, etc.

[quote]R37's dad is gay

There probably weren't as many selfie deaths. There have always been camera-crazy people who just have to have that 'one shot,' but it wasn't something they immediately uploaded or developed. Instagram has kinda wreaked havoc on a lot of popular nature destinations.

by Anonymousreply 75December 15, 2020 6:17 PM
