I can hardly read the stories on most publications now because of the pop ups and ads. So I just close the page and move on.
Why is there so much crap advertising on most websites?

I'm the same as you OP. I use an ad blocker with Chrome and some of the website demand you turn it off when you visit their site otherwise they blank out the webpage.
And when it's off, the ads come flying out from all directions and videos too. Sometimes the ads cover the actual page content so you can't even read it and can't move the ads.
I also just close the page and look somewhere else now. Fuck that shit for a joke.

Same! I have posted here and asked others in real life why no one else seems bothered by it? Some websites have popups and flash ads that hover over, blink, wave, etc., and either keep coming back like herpes after you close them or do everything possible to distract you from reading the site. It is absplutely self-defeating when I am the site visitor. It's a world-wide web. If I am interested in the topic, I can find it elsewhere after I close that site and remember never to visit it again.

I don’t know how many if any buy the crap offered. I’ve never seen a random website offer anything but junk.

If you’re not paying for a product/website, then you’re the product. The only reason Google, FB and many websites are “free” is because they rely on you and your data to act as an advertisement target.

The at Daily Mail (don't judge me) site is the worst. They have ads and video covering the page and it usually causes my older laptop to overheat if i scroll down more than a few stories. I used to have the site adblocked but they have some sort of anti adblock thing so you have to disable it. The worst are the pay sites that continue to pack in as many ads as possible. I could handle a few ads and maybe even read them, now all I do is leave the site as soon as I can.

Yes we know R5. We also know that each ad/video that manages to load earns the website a tiny ad fee.
The point some of us are trying to make is that the ads are so over the top like an assault and invasive that you cannot read the content on the page so a lot of end users X out of the page and visit another website.
Therefore; the websites are not being read and the ads are failing to reach the end user. Not all sites do this but there are a couple which are notorious for this assault tactic.

R7 thank you! I also get sick of the “BUT THE ADVERTISEMENTS!!!” excuse. If you overload your page with crap, no good will come of it.
