In my teen years, (late 70's, early 80's), it was pretty much any pic of an attractive, shirtless man. I recall an hairy chested man in a Solflex ad that really got me off, as well as Brian Buzzini, (Playgirl's, Man of the Year 1986).

The neighbor lady's copy of "Playgirl" featuring Steve Rally as "Man of the Year" (1985) was accidentally delivered to our house, and I happened to pick up the mail that day.

I pretty much knew what was inside, because I'd seen the plastic wrapper that the magazine came in before.

Not telling anyone, I concluded that it was just FATE that this magazine fell into my teen-aged hands, so I kept it.

Yeah, I guess I was breaking one or more federal laws, but Steve's glorious, three-page, fold-out centerfold was worth it .. lol!

Another vote for Madsen, who was exquisitely beautiful. He did a series of semi-nude art photos that I was obsessed with.

Speaking of which, the two-page ad for Calvin Klein's "Obsession" featured four chiseled nude men and only two nude women, with the clear implication being that some gay homosexual sex was about to occur.

There's a reason why daytime soap operas were so popular with gay men. It was one place to see some shirtless prime beef, often parading around in Speedos.

It's too bad Shrine to the Soap Hunks went broke. There was so much history of hot men cataloged there. But here's one of the more famous Speedos of the era, John Wesley Shipp. (Kevin Bacon's character would put this 1980-81.)

[quote]may i ask how old you are? because EVERY gay man watched the soaps in the 80's and 90's..

by Anonymousreply 77December 13, 2020 5:02 PM

R77 That explains a lot. The internet became a thing in the 90s and the gaylings suddenly had more options for entertainment and male flesh viewing. Plus, the "golden age" of soaps had already passed.

by Anonymousreply 78December 13, 2020 5:12 PM

r78 - good point. I think soaps hit a peak in the early 80's. Everyone I knew as a teenager had a soap they watched - male and female. My very straight older brother even watched one.

Just turning 18, I also went into a Dalton's Bookstore and picked out the Advocate Classifieds. If I remember correctly, it was a big newspaper, separate from the Advocate magazine. Anyway, I was still living at home and had to read it behind my bed, I was so worried about being caught. I couldn't believe what I was seeing - nude guys, sex toys, escorts, I think I had a hard-on for four hours!

by Anonymousreply 82December 13, 2020 5:31 PM

all i know is in regards to soaps, besides the daytime talk shows where else were you going to see handsome guys on a variety of shows in sex scenes and showing it all off in the 80s and 90s, that was on regular TV and before the internet and cable proliferation?...

i'm wondering for those of you (say those over 40) who claim you never watched the soaps and/or some who claim that they haven't watched them since the 80's or 90s, DO you mean you didn't watch them for the storylines OR you never watched them at all because you didn't know or care about the hunks on them?....

by Anonymousreply 83December 13, 2020 6:00 PM

I'm 54 and I never watched soaps. I guess I knew they had a lot of handsome guys on them, but I didn't know they took their clothes off much. And I thought they were boring. They were something my grandmother always watched.

by Anonymousreply 84December 13, 2020 6:03 PM

R84... well for the most part the soaps were boring and of course ridiculous stupid and unbelievable... but you missed countless hunks on them and in lovemaking scenes and shown off too....you missed alot!

along with the daytime talk shows that seemingly had male strippers and centerfold models and hunk contest nearly every week, the soaps were IT back then in the 80's and 90s like i said before the internet and hundreds of cable channels....

even now, i watch the very few remaining for NEVER the storyline but for the eye candy (i.e. paul telfer on days of our lives and before him shawn christian on the same show)...

by Anonymousreply 85December 13, 2020 6:06 PM

This is going to sound like even more ancient than my post at R5. My first boyfriend, who was the archetypal bottom, used to like to gaze at pics of nude men and their dicks. So his fag hag, he and I would go to adult bookstores and buy a few mags for him, none of them too salacious. The fag hag and him would gaze at the pics and discuss them. He would then have me go to some relatively remote place and hide them so we could go retrieve them later. Typically the hiding place was under a large rock. One time we went to retrieve them and they were gone. He was so disappointed. Strange thing is that his parents had an extensive porn collection on VHS. So other than the fact that they were gay magazines, it wasn't as if there wasn't plenty of available porn in their house. I'm glad I wasn't into porn and didn't have to go to such lengths, so to speak, to find pics of guys I liked.

1. Thom Bierdz’ Phillip Chancellor III (THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS) in a speedo by the pool during the summer months.

2. The gay porn video BIG GUNS. It was the first porn video I ever saw and my mind was blown. I thought Mike Henson was gorgeous. Every scene sizzles and the seduction scenes between Mike Henson and Kevin Williams and then Jeff Quinn and John Rocklin were heart stopping.

by Anonymousreply 145December 15, 2020 1:14 AM

I had the advantage of sharing a room with my straight older brother growing up, so his straight porno mags were a primary source for me as a teenager. Playboy featured Bo Derek's 'Tarzan', which introduced me to Miles O'Keefe. I'd occasionally work up the nerve to buy 'Playgirl' or 'Viva' once I was old enough, but hard-core porn wasn't readily available in my Midwestern city. 'International Male' catalogues had to provide my wanking material.

When I was a teen I had some porn mags with pics of John Davenport. He wasn't that handsome but he looked like a friend I grew up with. We played sports together and he was a nice guy, not too bright, very charming and had a big dick.

I like porn magazines and could build up fantasies because I didn't have access to any porn movies so you really didn't know anything about the guys, really. Didn't even know how they spoke or moved.

1)i could and do still get off on a photo of a naked or gorgeous built man

2) i use my imagination greatly to "CREATE" a sexual scene... for instance, i can watch a soap opera or a tv show see a handsome man with a woman in a scene and visualize them having sex...i can and do create sexual tension and scenarios in scenes on soaps or movies or tv shows when they're is LITERALLY NOTHING sexual going on or if there is it's very mild...sometimes it's NOT all about full on hardcore nudity and actual sex on screen....the IMAGINATION IS A GREAT TOOL FOR EVERYONE TO USE....

3) DAVID BOALS was gorgeous alright... reminds me of a more "feminine" jon erik hexum?......

4) soap opera hunks of the 80's and 90's wearing speedos/bikini's! i think the actor who wore them the most was perhaps RONN MOSS of the bold and the beautiful? usually black, one time in blue and one time even in a leopard animal print! so kinky and erotic that was!....

don diamont of course and others, even hairy beefy built "daddy" actor michael swann i remember wearing a green bikini on that one soap! whew!....

by Anonymousreply 159December 15, 2020 12:04 PM

When I was home sick, I might have looked at soap operas for the male flesh infusion, but none ever made me want to tune in tomorrow, storywise. And then I watched Another World in the summer of 1988, when they were doing the Cory/Frame version of Romeo and Juliet, and I was hooked in one episode.

Not one shirt was removed, IIRC, but I had to know what happened between those two families. Nothing else would do. And I had no idea of the subtext that underlay the story. How it paid off for me when they did their version of "The Necklace," which, thankfully, I had never read.

I don't remember my favorite porn actor that year. Jeff Stryker? Brian Maxon? But I sure do remember Matthew and Josie.

And I told her in the car that it was a present for her so that I wouldn't have to show it to her. For some reason, she had to go back in the store and she told the clerk that her son had just been in and bought a present for her and he said, "He sure did!" anyone remember the mall store "spencer's gifts"?... how as a youngster i would regularly browse there trying not to get "caught" as i checked out the male calendars and the nearly nude sexy postcards on the racks! laugh!...

by Anonymousreply 175December 16, 2020 11:54 AM

[quote] anyone remember the mall store "spencer's gifts"?.

I sure do! I thought black light posters were so cool.

I also remember Walden Books. I'd spend hours in there, reading trashy novels. There always seemed to be a gay-sex scene in there somewhere I could read and reread while my mother was shopping elsewhere.

When it came time to meet her, I'd do my best to hide my boner and go out into the mall (thank god for tight Brittania jeans and Jockey shorts that held everything in place so no flopping around). Later those mental images would be j/o material. Why I just didn't buy the book and read it at home is one of my life's mysteries.

Zines in the late 80s and early 90s had some good "homocore queer punk grunge" content, Fanorama among them. A decade earlier in my mid-teens in LA there were some artsy gay bookstores that stocked a lot of erotica. And the kiosks off Hollywood Boulevard were full of Blueboy and Mandate and the like. Even mid-sized cities in California had the Advocate pink pages for sale in vending machines on street corners downtown for a few quarters in the slot. Polk and Castro neighborhood bookstores in SF also didn't seem to bat an eye if you were underage back then.
