This show is amazing.

by Anonymousreply 1December 29, 2020 4:46 AM

If there is not even the slightest hint of Lawrusso in this season, not even a single lampshade hanging, then I am out.

Daniel & Johnny went on a date to a restaurant last season. The writers have to top that, now.

by Anonymousreply 2December 29, 2020 8:41 PM

Zabka deserves all the nominations for S2:E3 “Fire & Ice”.

He’s nailed the drama, comedy and melodrama, without ever hitting a false note. Alphabet needs to push this as best...drama? Comedy? Limited series?

The 80s nostalgia is powerful and the edge is unique for our new normal.

by Anonymousreply 3December 30, 2020 2:57 AM

Daniel seems to lust Johnny in every scene they have together, you can see it in his eyes. I wonder why it comes across like that? Maybe because for some reason sweet Ralph Macchio just has zero chemistry with any woman, ever?

And on the show the characters both seem jealous of each other with women...

Unpopular opinion, but I kind of secretly love that woobie lil emopunk Robby and feel he must be protected at all costs.

Would also be kind of adorable and forward-thinking if he hooked up with Miguel. They have a lot in common (poor street kids, absent fathers, bad history with karate, esteem problems), and Sam isn’t good for either of them, anyways...

by Anonymousreply 5December 30, 2020 2:35 PM

So Terry Silver is definitely coming back, right?

Can’t wait to see the power-pony again. And to see Johnny’s reaction to the weird sexual tension Daniel has with Terry.

At the half way mark and haven't been disappointed. There are veterans from the franchise who pop up in a few episodes. It's amazing how Macchio and Zabka relatively look the same and everyone else looked markedly aged.

by Anonymousreply 7January 1, 2021 8:45 PM

Miguel has two daddies!

by Anonymousreply 8January 2, 2021 3:41 AM

You could tell from the looks and subtle blocking that the lady at rehab totally assumed Daniel is Johnny’s husband. Daniel does not correct her, and even looked delighted by the assumption, and I love it.

Also, “our son” had me dead.

Just binged it. LOVED it. The reunions with Kumiko, Chozen and Ali were great. The Protmen's remake of Phil Collins's In The Air Tonight was the perfect way to close out the season.

All credit to the writers and actors for continuing to play up the Johnny/Daniel relationship, though more of that content and less Karate!Kids (TM) wouldn't hurt.

Johnny & Daniel had a couple serious confrontations this season, but the bitterness and mistrust and emnity they carried is falling away. More importantly, this time around they thought of each other. They looked out for each other. They saved each other. Daniel always fusses over Johnny like an overbearing partner (gets him food, worries for his health, fixes his clothes, chides his bad choices), while Johnny has proven that he will literally throw himself into harm's way (a very unequal fight, a prison yard brawl) if it means protecting Daniel from harm but will also listen to Daniel's advice and follow his lead when the situation calls for it.

From the OG films to every season of CK, it's a throughline that Johnny looks at Daniel for less than 5 seconds before that half-chewed piece of gum he calls his one braincell goes "I WANT THAT TWINK O B LIT ER ATE D but not before I fuck him with my eyes and make sure he can't focus on anyone else but me", then Daniel responds to that by searching Johnny's eyes back in hopeful trembling amorous intensity for a whole minute Vivien Leigh-style. It's so beautiful.

It's hard to understand by now why all the CK characters don't constantly aside to Johnny & Daniel, "yeah just. marry him and get it over with?". Amanda is the only one so far to point out their old-couple vibe, and we're already halfway through the entire series run. There was a funny moment where Robby came close in a scene this season; he walked in on his dad and Daniel arguing with their faces up close and whispering intently, and the kid just noped out like, "ugh, right in front of my salad? I'm gone".

Kreese's old army buddy is Terry Silver.

by Anonymousreply 17January 3, 2021 1:08 AM

The age difference is laughable.

by Anonymousreply 18January 3, 2021 1:15 AM

I saw the original film at the cinema when it was originally released. I've enjoyed all three seasons of CK. I love all the Easter Egg references to the original film. I love seeing the supporting characters (and even setting locations) pop up from time to time. And I loved the Season I and II cliffhangers. It's great how the young female characters get in on the action and kick some ass alongside the boys.

by Anonymousreply 19January 3, 2021 1:32 AM

[quote]Kreese's old army buddy is Terry Silver.

Thomas Ian Griffith was part of the Karate Kid / Cobra Kai Reunited at Home (19:59). He's a writer now. He was staff writer on NBC's GRIMM and he and his wife, actress Mary Page Keller, wrote "Dolly Parton's Heartstrings" TV movie.

Wow, who knew the DL would majority love a show! Never thought I'd see the day! I always thought the bitches of DL would find fault with the Karate Kid movie franchise, farless a spin off series.

Question the actor who died in 2019, I forgot his name, I don't think he was ever married and from what I remember reading about him, he was a big theatre actor. Was he gay?

by Anonymousreply 21January 3, 2021 1:53 AM

It could've been a beautiful love story between two mens who realize their unbridled passion for one another after being high school nemeses. But we get all this karate shit with kids.

by Anonymousreply 22January 3, 2021 3:12 AM

Netflix keeps pushing this show on me constantly why?

by Anonymousreply 23January 3, 2021 3:29 AM

This show is god awful, and yet I can't stop watching it.

by Anonymousreply 24January 3, 2021 3:33 AM

Season 3 was a little slower, but the theme was aftermath. The final battle scenes were good, but not quite as epic as the season 2 finale. There is great chemistry between Johnny and Daniel whenever they are on the screen together. Zabka is really the standout. He and Miguel's scenes are always really touching. Elizabeth Shu looks great for 57. It was a good, solid season and the cast is great.

by Anonymousreply 25January 3, 2021 6:02 AM

R18 it’s such a mindscrew to realise that, in THE KARATE KID PART III Thomas Ian Griffith (the actor who plays forty-something Terry Silver) is younger than Ralph Macchio (playing a nineteen/twenty-year old Daniel).

The age difference between Silver & Kreese is somewhat more plausible, though. The backstory is that Kreese & Silver served in the same platoon in ‘Nam; the Draft didn’t discriminate too much about age when it came to readiness and rank plus the whole operation was pretty thrown together, so I don’t think it’s a crazy notion that the two men could have fought together closely or that a very young Silver could have received a rank or distinction unusual for his level of experience.

What I do question is how and why Silver had to stay on the frontline for as long as Kreese, given his wealth. Perhaps he didn’t make all that money or ascend in the business world until after the War - it’s not made clear in KKIII.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to another attempt by Silver at seducing Daniel, if only to see Johnny get jealous and do something about it.

[quote] It could've been a beautiful love story between two mens who realize their unbridled passion for one another after being high school nemeses.

Subtextually it IS that. Or at least I’m watching it that way, as a gay person. According to the Internet reviews and comments I’ve read, others (hundreds, at least, maybe a few thousand) have noticed the same and read the story that way too. The actors all joke about it—Xolo & Mary have both made snapchats about it. Even the creator Hayden Schlossberg has acknowledged there is something going on with Daniel & Johnny’s relationship that is surprisingly intimate...

[quote] But we get all this karate shit with kids.

Yeah, I hate it too. This is the first season where I’ve learned to feel ok about forwarding past some of the more tedious or lengthy highschool scenes to get to the Karate DILF content. I missed like a quarter of the show and probably some decent acting by talented kids; but the fact is my attention is limited, time is precious and I just don’t care about Gen Z drama, sorry. I admit that I do always like and watch scenes with Demetri & Hawk/Eli, and I find their actors compelling and their story touching. Miguel is likeable and cool, and Robby is quite a refreshing character too if a bit too angsty and overpowered (I mean, almost punching his Dad out? Very Brandon @Tommy Lee...). It’s the Larusso kids (especially Anthony), the lesser Cobra/Miyagi-do kids, and Tory who reduce me to yawns.

R30 safe to say that regardless of sex or orientation, basically everyone is sexually obsessed with Johnny Lawrence.

Kreese does seem to lovebomb and flirt with his protégé a little too much for comfort, though. It must be a Cobra method: Silver did the same to Daniel.

legendary that kumiko — on realising the married guy she once kissed 30 years ago is coming onto her — texts his arch nemesis under the table to come over and show him around town and then she peaces out of the entire exercise by saying she has some “errands” to run. queen shit

then by contrast theres the fact that a 70 something year old man with ptsd can’t possibly fathom operating a karate dojo without a cardboard cutout version of himself

by Anonymousreply 33January 3, 2021 10:19 AM

R40 I too think that is kind of suspect. A ‘straight’ man who is that staggeringly hot and fit yet without a trail of broken women and illegitimate kids behind him? Something’s not quite right there.

He basically a nothing-Lister for about thirty years, so he could have gotten away with being quietly gay and using an alias with no one the wiser.

The meta beats and self awareness of the show adds to the humor. I laughed at that scene and the scene in the first episode at the school meeting and someone shouted out that they heard Daneil was the real bully; something fans have been saying for years.

by Anonymousreply 47January 3, 2021 3:30 PM

You know, I'm not here for the hetero people, but even my cold dark black gay soul has to admit that Johnny & Ali's reunion and near-kiss was sweet.

Daniel is still the one meant for Johnny, of course, but it was a cute moment. That scene made both actors look they were eighteen again, just for a second. Lizzy Shue is still very beautiful.

R39 what blows my mind is that Ralph was a married man in the two KARATE KID sequels he did. Playing as Daniel in KK Pt. III, he was thirty years old and had a kid.

I remember laughing over the trivia that Ralph's legit wife vetoed any romantic angle for Daniel-san in Pt. III, because she was jealous and it made her upset. Guess the COBRA KAI money changed her tune on that...

by Anonymousreply 50January 3, 2021 7:10 PM

R49 not sure where/when I read or saw this so don't take it as fact, but I seem to remember something about Ralph's son having minor learning difficulties and/or some kind of mild functional personality disorder.

His daughter Julia is (or was?) a professional dancer and a musical theater performer. She must have gotten the stage-bug and her looks from Ralph; in fact, she is the spitting image of Daddy. All this considered and the fact that they're Italians, it's a safe bet she's the favorite. Wonder why she hasn't appeared in CK yet?

by Anonymousreply 55January 4, 2021 4:04 AM

Ralphs eyelift and hair piece (which is better this season), make him look older to me than Zabka. Johnny is just one of those rare guys who was a total pretty boy but grew into a rugged, natural looking hunk, even in his mid 50's.

by Anonymousreply 56January 4, 2021 7:16 AM

This show is missing a golden opportunity to make Hawk/Demetri a babygay couple. It’s the perfect setup; they’re former best friends, in rival dojo, with totally opposite personalities and philosophies to conflict resolution. Actual m/m content could be fangirl bait supreme and is key to get more gay eyes on the product. Instead all we have is invisible bi-girl Moon, and jokes about DILF bromance.

R67, I love Cobra Kai but the romance is obviously geared towards the hetro male fantasies , since they moved to netflix the show will prob put a hot lesbian /pan character in there for s4 or bring aisha back. I doubt we will get a gay character I don’t think they want to disappoint their straight male fans.

by Anonymousreply 69January 5, 2021 11:07 AM

There were pictures of Jacob with his girlfriend on Instagram.

And Bill Hader is a closet case according to someone here on DL with reliable sources, so there's hope R67.

by Anonymousreply 70January 5, 2021 12:57 PM

I’d rather Jacob be the closet case than Gianni though I agree he is nerdy cute.

It’s a really good show. Very solid. But it’s very straight male in every way. You just know instead of saying “pussy” every other word they want to say “fag”. It’s not believable that out of the misfits from CC, none are gay.

by Anonymousreply 71January 5, 2021 3:46 PM

Miguel is good looking, but looks so different in real life than his character. Miguel in CK has such an aura of innocence, but IRL looks like he is a member of a columbian cartel. He looks a little bit like Carlos Leon.

While I appreciate how reverent CK is to the source material, and how the writing has remained rich and full of twists, I do worry that with seasonal progression the series is becoming too dark and too sterile, losing track of what it is and how it began.

Season One did so well because it was sharp, bright, and wickedly funny with occasional little jabs of seriousness or drops of sweetness. Overall, it was a clear dramedy, with a focused premise and heavy on the dialogue-based humour and conflict. In Season Three, the picture feels quite different--the waters are muddy, much of the character exchange takes place in wordless fight scenes, while the bite and bonhomie have faded. Perhaps this is all quite natural a drift for a longrunner, but to me it feels like there is a danger of CK becoming too po-faced.

Half the joy in the first two seasons was delighting in how out-of-touch, juvenile, and just plain rude our favorite himbo Johnny is. I get that he's going through a lot in the show this year, and that having one kid in prison and the other almost disabled is no laughing matter, but Johnny is still the same dude and people don't love him for his suffering.

I guess what I'm saying is, I hope there's light at the end of the tunnel, and that the heavy #THEMES are counterbalanced by some more zippy comedy next time around. This ain't Chekhov, we don't need to cry bitter tears twice every episode. Even the final scene of Season Three, meant to be triumphant and heartwarming. still felt ominous and uncomfortable thanks to the looming threat that all these highschoolers may potentially get maimed fighting the deranged little soldiers of a PTSD case because their fifty-something mentors asked them to. The cover of 'In The Air Tonight' playing out the finale was cool and sounded great, but also gave a weirdly menacing overtone--it made it seem like the Johnny/Daniel truce was already rotting apart with suspicion, when they hadn't even started down their path as partners yet.

Knowing all that we know now from CK, it's way more revealing and intriguing watching the rehearsal shoots of the original KK movie.

The tension between Daniel & Johnny comes across as a hundred times more gay, for one thing. Every gayling here stared across the street or the schoolyard or playing field at the beautiful jock in their highschool in the same way...unless you "were" the beautiful jock, of course.

Also, the actress who plays Lucille could not look more like Macchio. It’s eerie.

I'm on ep 2. Are they trying to soften Kreese up a bit being a defender of damsels in distress?

by Anonymousreply 80January 11, 2021 3:28 AM

Seasons 1 and 2 were definitely going for a woke feel. The most fun came from watching Johnny's outdated 1980s attitude clash with the social justice warrior attitudes of his teen students. There was lots of diversity in the cast. The only thing they shied away from was having a gay character.

Season 3 was disappointing. Still no gay characters, and I heard the slur "penisbreath" a couple of times. Jeez, is that graphic slur really any better than the F word?

by Anonymousreply 81January 11, 2021 3:38 AM

I still enjoyed Season 3, but enjoyed it a bit less than the first two, and can't put my finger on why.

The scene with Daniel and Sam kayaking on that massive lake, with trees showing autumn foliage, brought home to me how while the show is supposed to take place in the SF Valley, it's definitely filmed outside of Southern California.

by Anonymousreply 82January 11, 2021 6:27 PM

Hawk needs to fuck me now.

by Anonymousreply 83January 20, 2021 11:31 PM

[quote] The only thing they shied away from was having a gay character.

Hawk's ex-girlfriend "Moon" ended up being a lesbian but otherwise no gay male characters.

Also I don't get it when people comment on a "woke" feel when the show is doing a pretty good job at presenting the variety of people that would live in that area in real life.

by Anonymousreply 84January 20, 2021 11:40 PM

They should make Hawk gay and partner him up with that other boy with the Russian name.

by Anonymousreply 85January 20, 2021 11:56 PM

R85 there are hundreds of kids watching the show and posting on Tumblr who think the same thing. Some of them have even tweeted the writers to ask if that is a possibility.

The characters have more chemistry with each other than with their girlfriends, and more than any of the main ‘canon’ hetero couples like Sam & Miguel/Robby or Johnny & Carmen. It’s established that they have been best friends for about ten years (the type to have biweekly sleepovers...), so there is a lot of emotional intimacy there between them already. Demetri’s pursuit of Yasmine seems so forced and awkward as if it’s for show, while Hawk was upset for a couple of hours tops when Moon dumped him then totally forgot about it (when Demetri approached him, no less). If any of the established new main characters are to be a gay couple, it makes perfect sense to use Eli & Demetri.

A MALE same sex hookup will never happen on this show

The fan base is extremely anti gay male

I've actually thought about leaving a fan group because of it, and I'm FAR from an SJW

And it's pretty bad when lesbian/bisexual girls are threatening to leave the group because of the homophobia towards gay men , not lesbians of course because everyone loves lesbians, straight people really don't have a problem with them

And yet these SAME homophobes will post pictures of how hot the teen actresses are or show pictures of the two girls kissing screen cap as being "hot', the hypocrisy is amazing, you really can't make this shit up

Also by posting those pictures, straight men are promoting the very "gay shit" they hate on there, it's two women but it's still "gay shit", if you want to be homophobic, he homophobic across the board, don't make it worse by pushing lesbianism

Fucking hypocrite small dick fucks

The creators of Cobra Kai are very aware of the “Lawrusso”ship and have interacted with the fans on twitter the straight males fans might be disgusted if they find out. Conra Kai s3 was incredibly hyped with tona of promotions but it didnt do as well as Bridgeton or the Queen’s gambits and there are already several articles calling them out on the show for being all white.

by Anonymousreply 88January 22, 2021 12:44 PM

R88 it's not all white, Italians weren't considered white for years, Miguel, the MAIN younger character and his Mom Carmen, aren't white

I've noticed on Facebook most of the homophobia and anti gay male bullshit, is by younger Latino, many of whom live outside the US, men. The fan base would NOT be cool at all with ANY gay male representation, they wouldn't be able to handle it. Lesbians are loved, hell people post about Hawk fucking Demitri's Mom and how awesome that would be, so sex with the underage is fine!

Just NO gay male shit

They've stated their boundaries!

by Anonymousreply 89January 22, 2021 12:50 PM

r88 Just greenlight a spin off with King Vader. That dream episode sequence is about as urban as we're going to get.

That being said the show is diverse, but all the minorities are side characters except for Miguel. Which is the price to pay when you do a sequel based off a movie in the 80s which was a time when whiteness dominated cinema and tv.

[quote] hell people post about Hawk fucking Demitri's Mom

What?!!! Ugh🤢

Given how much time in childhood Eli/Hawk is said to have spent over at Demetri’s family home, it’s safe to say that Demetri’s mother is effectively a second mother to Eli/Hawk as well. Making this idea pseudo-incestual.

But hey, anything but real homosexuality, right?

by Anonymousreply 91January 22, 2021 2:25 PM

in actuality at least ONE of those kids at either Dojo would be gay, he would go to get tough to fight the bullies

But apparently, if a gay male character is introduced, they're being "woke" and are part of the "liberal agenda"

Those same fucks are pushing female/female kissing and are hoping Tori and Sam hook up

But isn't that the "gay agenda" too?

Aren't you promoting a "perverted lifestyle" yourself?

Straight men are the last to understand the hypocrisy and irony of it all. There are straight guys who still Swear that lesbians are simply here to titillate straight men, for their pleasure

Do these straight guys realize that if 90% of lesbians would get away with it, they would kill straight guys, since so many hate them and want NOTHING to do with them?

by Anonymousreply 92January 22, 2021 5:49 PM

R92 *applause*

If Tory was/is a babydyke, you just know she’ll quickly become one of those misandrist ones. And given the way she’s been treated by Kreese, by her absent father, and by the patriarchal educational-medical establishment, I wouldn’t fucking blame her.

As for Sam? Well, her Dad seems gay, so maybe it’s genetic. Considering the needless trouble she gets into with guys, dating a girl may be a better option for her. Of course, if the show went that route they’d instantly take away all the character’s agency and abilities to fight, give her an equally-femme gf, and put her in tighter skimpier outfits, so she could be the right level of stupid helpless ditz to drool over for the dudes watching this....

This has me wondering if the handling of gay-lesbian issues was one of the reasons the actress for the character Aisha left. This is pure speculation on my part, and I don’t know whether the actress is lesbian (she seems like it, but I won’t assume), but tbh the way the character was written came across like the stereotypical coded Fat Black Softbutch Dyke trope. My theory is that either a) the writers/producers were pushing for Aisha to be the Token Fat Black Dyke for Wokeness points, and the actress would have none of it for whatever reason (not necessarily homophobia—maybe that it was poorly written, or she didn’t agree with tokenism, or they were going a T direction), or; the converse, b) that the actress wanted Aisha to be openly lesbian and have a coming-out/Gay romance arc on the show, and the writers would have none of it because Fat Black Dykes don’t draw with general/global heteroaudiences and aren’t considered appealing by the straight bros & Moms that watch this with their crotchfruit.

Now we’re talking about it, ticks me off that there isn’t a single main character in CK who is openly guy and proudly stereotypical, I.e. a butch lesbian or a femme gay man. The BAME viewers are complaining, but at least they have a granule of representation, albeit too little and neutral/negative.

by Anonymousreply 93January 22, 2021 6:17 PM

[quote]This has me wondering if the handling of gay-lesbian issues was one of the reasons the actress for the character Aisha left.

She said they told her they wrote her off because they couldn't find a place for her in the scripts.

The show said they intend to write characters off and bring them back occasionally and that not every actor has to be in every season.

Aisha was the only friend Sam had that was a woman who wasn't trying to beat her up. It made zero sense to completely get rid of her.

Although getting Elisabeth Shue in, keeping Martin Kove around and actually filming in Okinawa probably wasn't cheap so maybe I answered my own questions.

by Anonymousreply 94January 22, 2021 7:00 PM

I always thought Aisha was a lesbian character they just didn't explore it. And now that the character was "put on the bus" there are no potential characters that are homosexual without the transition being awful because there were no hints or buildup for it in the previous seasons.

Honestly if they do a gay character it will have to be a new character introduced. Maybe that will happen in season 4 as Netflix produced shows tend to have a token gay character and season 4 is the season Netflix money is used for production.

Well that's disappointing to hear. I thought this younger generation of kids was more evolved beyond that tired "2 girls = hot, 2 guys = gross" trope. Because that's some late '90s/early '00s bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 96January 22, 2021 7:13 PM

They couldn't find a place for her in the scripts? Sounds like PR bullshit. They basically replaced her with the fat boy this season. Her personal life seems fucked up. She started a GoFundMe because hey boyfriend got a DUI and crashed her car.

by Anonymousreply 97January 22, 2021 7:25 PM

R96; you're joking right?

That's all you hear on social media

Even are more comfortable seeing two girls on love, women don't want to see two hot guys because they feel like they would have to compete, even though according to a recent Cosmopolitan survey, nearly 70% of women surveyed (and remember Cosmo skews more liberal women), said they would never date a guy who was with a guy even ONCE .Crazy.

Gay men get homophobia on all ends and we're not even allowed to talk about it because just us talking about upsets the hets

[quote]I thought this younger generation of kids was more evolved beyond that tired "2 girls = hot, 2 guys = gross" trope. Because that's some late '90s/early '00s bullshit.

They are but 1. it's still not as many as there should be and 2. shows like this, comic book shows and science fiction has always lagged behind when it comes to gay male representation.

They're fine with two women making out but if it's two men then suddenly someone has a problem.

Every time I hear a character is going to come out as gay on one of those shows I just know it's going to end up being a woman.

As horrible as a person as Joss Whedon turned out to be personally, I always respected his stance that he, doesn't "give the audience what they want" he "gives the audience what they need" in reference to dealing with his characters.

Cobra Kai could easily reveal that one of the guys on the show is gay and not care if their fans pitch a hissy fit about it. They just won't do it.

by Anonymousreply 101January 22, 2021 9:37 PM

So who do we think the gay character(s) will actually end up being, then? The writers & showrunners have liked and shared fan questions that petition for LGBT inclusion, and this is on Netflix, so presumably there will have to be something more than a kiss without tongue between teen girl background characters. . While I want it to be Eli & Demetri, I know it won't be. If by some miracle a male is chosen for the gay reveal, I could see the show picking a pointless NPC character for a little one-episode exploration; say Anoush or Stingray, or Mitch or Bert for the kids. It's more likely to be a girl/woman, though, and of course not a main character (knocking out Tory & Sam), so it's got to be either a new girl (maybe a Millennial ex of Johnny's who shows up, or the lady who runs the yoga classes next to the dojo?), or one of those other mean-girl bitches at the school who isn't Moon. It would be so fucking funny if Amanda left Daniel for a woman (I sensed some chemistry between her & Ali....), but can life really be that good?

by Anonymousreply 102January 23, 2021 11:02 PM

It's going to be a new character. But in case they don't want to do that they'll either give me screen time to Moon and her girlfriend or find a way to make Tori or Aisha bisexual(since they're the two butch female characters on the show).

by Anonymousreply 103January 24, 2021 1:53 AM

[quote] So who do we think the gay character(s) will actually end up being, then?

Miguel and Robby, lol. Now how is that for a twist?

by Anonymousreply 104January 24, 2021 1:56 AM

The way Tanner Buchanan plays Robby in fight scenes is really conspicuously masochistic; I noticed it on a rewatch of certain episodes with the frame-rate slowed down (helps me to focus better).

That is either a very sophisticated and astute acting choice, or it's a fluke of accidental brilliance thanks to a weird fetish.

Jacob Bertrand should also be applauded for his subtlety in putting together Hawk/Eli's character, particularly with reference to his possible autism diagnosis (mentioned in S01E02). As someone with diagnosed Asperger's, I have to say the portrayal is excellent.

If you watch his arc carefully, you will notice that, like an autistic in any confounding social environment, the character mimics and masks around almost everybody--with the exceptions of his mother, Miguel, and of course Demetri. Eli even begins to take on characteristics of others in a bid to hide who he is and defend himself from harm; most noticeably, he adopts Johnny's sneer and way of walking, Tory's hostile stare, and Miguel's style of fighting. When Eli becomes Hawk and completely changes his demeanour and appearance, he exhibits masking taking to a literal and physical extreme, which is another classic indicator of ASD. We haven't gotten a glimpse of his room in this latest season, but I imagine if we had it would likely be stripped bare of anything resembling or signifying the character to whom we were first introduced, and look like a shrine to his latest fixation (karate, naturally).

Another strong example of Eli's spectrum traits is his tendency to show confusion or delay in responding to social/verbal cues, and not knowing how to handle emotional confrontation or complex social quandaries. Season 2 showed many instances of this stumbling block at work, particularly in Hawk's scenes with Demetri at Moon's party and at the mall. Eli is very easily overwhelmed and caves to pressure, a weakness in some autistic people, and again this rears its ugly head in Season 2 when Hawk breaks Demetri's arm at the urging of the Cobras and under the stress of the fight. Even the way he reacts to being approached or touched without initiating is absolutely typical of a boy with ASD; you'll notice him flinch away, shrink, or refuse to make eye contact.

As I mentioned, though, people on the spectrum either cannot or choose not to maintain their masks and defence mechanisms around a chosen few trusted loved ones, and Jacob's acting makes it clear that Demetri is one of those people to Eli. To return to the party scene of Season 2, watching their scene together it's easy to notice that Eli is instantly relaxed and 'himself' when Demetri engages him in a conversation about their shared interest. Demetri approaches him slowly and from the side without touching so as not to spook Eli, and then starts a neutral discussion in a soft voice about one of Eli's fixations, which is a very clever and empathetic choice on Demetri's part. It's really touching to see Eli physically morph back into his original character mode during this conversation, because he feels safe enough to drop the exhausting masking and the terror that prompts it (and the gay in me appreciates that he stares at Demetri's lips for a few seconds, but that's a whole other post).

The groundswell of viewers on Reddit who have discussed this seem to support and predict Aisha possibly returning then coming out, a Demetri/Hawk pairing, or a Sam/Tory pairing (exploiting lesbians for fanboy titillation....groundbreaking). A few suggested Miguel/Robby, but it seems the idea was taken as a joke and some even reacted with revulsion to it (homophobic posters, most likely).

Weird that no-one has pointed out how it's mentioned in the first couple seasons that Daniel had/has "a thing for blondes" (can't recall the episode rn, but someone def said it). Yet his wife is a brunette, his youthful great love is implied to be the raven Kumiko, Jessica was a redhead who wouldn't even date him, and he doesn't give a second thought to dirty-blonde highschool-ex Ali until he shows Johnny her Facebook....

So then to whom could this possibly refer? Surely not the "pretty-boy" with "golden locks" he has spent the last 35 years obsessing over....

Just me, or is it incredibly sus how much time and energy Hawk and Demetri devote to their rivalry in particular, rather than like...idk, moving on with their lives??? Just ignoring each other and doing their own things, now that they are officially no longer bros and are in different friend circles, etc etc? Like they go OUT OF THEIR WAY to fuck with each other when they could just like...chill and move on. Really, they devote more time and energy to each other and their Rivalry™️ than either does to like...any other character.

I mean Demetri, a socially-awkward dude with limited people skills, works up the balls to get onstage and roast Hawk in front of an entire party. Hawk SEARCHES THROUGH AN ENTIRE SCHOOL ALL DAY to hunt down Demetri. Hawk goes up to Demetri on the first damn day back at school just to GLARE at him ominously (which happens RIGHT after some freshman girls give Demetri moony looks as they pass--jealous much???) Later on, Hawk coulda ignored Demetri and finished eating lunch with his Cool New Friends, but instead he goes out of his damn way to bust Demetri’s project and then come over and roast him about it. Demetri then eagerly goes over and reciprocates said roasting and spends that entire fucking soccer game tryna screw with Hawk in particular. They fricken almost IMMEDIATELY go for each other in the Golf N Stuff fight, IIRC. Like are Eli’s thoughts 90% “what’s the next thing I can do to fuck with Demetri?” Are Demetri’s thoughts 90% “what’s the next thing I can do to fuck with Eli?” Because like...I just don’t think obsessing over another man that much, even in a negative context...is very straight.

There’s also the fact that their arcs are WAY more intertwined with each other’s than ANY girl either of them dates or interacts with. I mean ffs, Moon dumped Hawk BECAUSE of how he treated Demetri--even Hawk’s supposed Straight Romantic Subplot™️ ties directly back into Demetri! And the only reason Demetri joins Miyagi-Do and doesn’t just like...fade into the background in Season 2 is to show HAWK SPECIFICALLY that he can “fight back.” And later we have DEMETRI being the one to make Hawk realize he’s gone too far with Cobra Kai and ultimately being the catalyst that makes Hawk SWITCH SIDES! Every major point of development for both characters directly involves the other--you could even argue Eli initially becomes “Hawk” in part because Demetri quits Cobra Kai, and isn’t around to stick up for him anymore--so he has to find another way to protect himself from bullying. Even their sense of “dojo rivalry” is mostly just about each other--Hawk’s animosity toward Miyagi-Do lowkey seems to stem almost entirely from Demetri in particular joining it and “betraying” him, while Demetri’s animosity toward Cobra Kai basically entirely comes from Cobra Kai taking Eli away from him. I literally like...cannot think of a single thing in either of their developments that doesn’t tie into the other in a major way.

Season 3 I was hoping Demetri’s arc, if he ran into Yasmine again, would be him realizing that he could have someone less bitchy and vile, and show enough self-respect to ditch someone who’s going to push him around, act like he’s beneath her, and talk smack about his friends the second she thinks they’re “lame.” Like...what even do these people have in common?? How are they going to build a lasting relationship off of...both having gotten a wedgie? Compare it to Demetri's deep long rich and protective bond with Eli and it's like...hmmm.

Moon and Yasmine feel like a single step in each of the boys’ character journeys--a single turning point to spur them in a certain direction. But Demetri and Hawk just...ARE each other’s character journeys. They’re not a step for the other to discover something about themselves or get pushed in a certain direction--they just ARE the entire arc for each other. Why not just let two male characters with a compelling story, a strong prior friendship, and REALLY good romantic chemistry just like...be gay??? It feels natural, it’s a good ending, and it's narratively satisfying.

R117 true, I could see that.

However, please consider the facts, that Hawk: loves taking direction and orders, as he unquestionably does from Kreese, Tory, Miguel, and earlier Demetri, his teachers, and his Mom; is very impressed and xo controlled by anyone stronger, taller or more assertive than him, and; is crippled internally by fear and his own shadow, in a way that a secure masc top would not be.

There’s a case for both, I feel.

R119 sweet, I’m happy for the writers and the actors.

That said, on a selfish viewer level, it kind of suck that it’s so popular, and particularly that it’s a hit with families and very hetero White-bread folks. Back in season one when it was only on YoutubeRed, the fandom seemed way more diverse and nerdy and full of people with sharp and satirical senses of humour, reflecting the show’s tone. As the series progresses and more kids/Bros/Frauen pick up the show, it is getting more and more soft-edged with the characterisation and the spicy takes on society (yet somehow harder and darker with the violence?) which honestly makes it boring and a turn-off for a viewer such as myself. I’ll probably punch out after next season if it continues to go this way. Ah well, it wasn’t exactly written for intellectual gays in mind, anyway.

by Anonymousreply 120February 9, 2021 9:07 PM

There are several recent articles that criticize how white it is with no diversity and has a very anti-PC slant . Dont forget s3 was suppose be for youtube and had to wait a year till netflix picked it up so I wouldn't be surprised if the show will change its tone in s4.

[quote] You should like this as it means a budget increase and further seasons.

Not necessarily. Most of my favorite shows of all-time have been one-season wonders or short runners, usually medium-budge or cult shows.

In my decades of tv-watching experience, the longer a show runs the worse it gets. More money for a production often shuts down creativity, because writers & producers no longer have to come up with clever workarounds for plot & characterisation & cinematography, instead just relying on FX and asspulls (George Lucas Syndrome).

The only exceptions are the shows that started off with no pretence to quality or depth in the first place, so for them the only way is up; this is particularly true of anime or formulaic franchise kids’ shows like POWER RANGERS.

I like CK and I’ll give the next season a chance, but my hopes and expectations are low.

by Anonymousreply 125February 13, 2021 10:24 AM

But Cobra Kai is basically like those animes and tokus with a sprinkle of CW teen drama. So it can only go up.

by Anonymousreply 126February 14, 2021 9:31 PM

Last week, Jacob Bertrand was getting dragged online, because apparently some students from his old school said that he had expressed racist sentiments in the past. I thought kids of this generation were unanimously against racism?

Anyway, I hope this doesn’t get Hawk/Eli written out of the show. His portrayal is probably the best out of all the younger cast. I especially like his physical and facial work in the background of scenes; if you watch him closely, he’s always animating a very clear but complex emotion.

My favorite are the wistful, rueful, lovelorn looks he often sends Demetri when the other isn’t looking. Jacob is adept at handling the duality between Eli & Hawk, the constant struggle between which persona he will allow through his mask at any given moment. It’s very interesting.

Solo and Jacob act the most gay behind the scenes. I've watched a lot of the cast BTS. Jacob and Xolo are always following around with each other. I get the nostalgia, but I find Daniel, Sam, and Robby the most boring. Tori is a fantastic fighter as is Hawk. I've watched their training sessions. These scenes are often done in one non stop take. The writers said they have 3 more seasons already mapped out I enjoy the show a lot, but they are going to need to liven things up next year. This season, Cobra Kai was basically Hawk, Tori, and Penis Breath. How did they fill a dojo with characters none of us know.

R68 - I want to track pants Hawk is wearing in that scene. I've looked and i can't find them, but they're cool.

Yes, sensei! Give it to me!

Joe "Bean" Esposito singing Karate Kid theme "You're The Best" a few years ago and still sounding awesome.

R152=Miguel, screaming in ecstasy from the back room of the dojo

by Anonymousreply 154April 6, 2021 11:00 PM

The characters on cobra kai are more three dimensional than they were in the movies. How the fuck are they going to deal with introducing a lunactic like Silver onto the show? He's a live action version of Mr.Burns from the Simpsons!

by Anonymousreply 155April 11, 2021 6:59 PM

R155 bear in mind he’ll be over twenty years older now (so, roughly aged somewhere in his sixties or maybe even pushing seventy), and in that time he’ll have been contending with a world that is increasingly intolerant of his type of business ethic and style I.e. highly-polluting/toxic, unsustainable, corrupt Big Business. He’ll also have to come to terms with the reformation of the karate-style invented by his dearest friend, into something unrecognisable—and having this happen thanks to his former grooming victim. That’s a lot to unpack, character-wise.

by Anonymousreply 156April 11, 2021 7:04 PM

R156 part of me is hoping for that kind of character development but a bigger part of hoping for a scenery chewing maniac in a jacuzzi...

R157 oh yeah, I hear you, and definitely agree. If the power-pony and all the charisma that it brings doesn’t return, that will be a major letdown.

Unpopular opinion but I actually dislike Daniel LaRusso as a character, so it’s satisfying to watching him get taken down a peg as he was in Part III. No matter how unrealistic it is, a Terry Silver who can still go and still represents a considerable threat would get me glued to to the screen.

by Anonymousreply 158April 11, 2021 8:42 PM

I hope Netflix doesn't fuck it up.

R159 hmmm, interesting. Wonder why the fight coordinators left? In productions like these, the martial effects are crucial to continuity and a feeling of authenticity; think Ray Park’s work for STAR WARS, etc.

by Anonymousreply 160April 18, 2021 12:36 PM

Probably because of Covid. Bad enough to have to be on a set but to have to be that up close and personal choreographing fights?

by Anonymousreply 161April 18, 2021 1:22 PM

Agree, I feel like Daniel LaRusso's character is when the show slows down for me. The best chemistry is between Johnny and Miguel. To me this is the heart of the story. I just don't buy Samantha LaRusso at all, although I do love Daniel's trophy wife Amanda. She has the look of a woman who is counting down the days and the money for her divorce. I think the show suffers when they spend too much time of Daniel, Samantha or Robby. The rest of the cast is pretty good. I love watching Tory fight. She, Hawk and Miguel are the most fun to watch in the fighting sequences. Season 1 was awesome, Season 2 was good, but was really a set up for the epic final fight sequence and Season 3 was sort of a dud. I think Terry Silver is just who we need for Season 4. I hope they can still keep this show going. Season 1 especially was a lot of fun.

by Anonymousreply 162April 18, 2021 8:27 PM

R162 yes, I’m with you on almost all of that.

Daniel only really shines in two-hander scenes with Johnny—Macchio just doesn’t have chemistry with anyone else on the show, sorry (no shade on his acting, that’s just the way it shakes out sometimes).

Of the kids, my personal favourites are Hawk, Demetri (controversial, I know, but at least he’s funny and spunky), Robby and Miguel. The young females aren’t written well on this show (besides Aisha, who is now tragically gone), and you can sort of tell there aren’t many women working in key roles on COBRA KAI. I think they could really afford to thin the herd of the Gen Z characters, starting with Anthony LaRusso.

The writers and the execs won’t do this because of homophobic cowardice, but honestly the best thing they could do for ratings and for the pacing/chemistry/storytelling of their show is get Amanda to divorce Daniel, sell their house, resign from the dealerships and pack her pussy and her kids off somewhere else, leaving him with only the dojo and the business to his name. Then Daniel can do the whole midlife crisis bit and get it over with, eventually coming to terms with the fact that he is crazy in love with Johnny and has been sublimating his feelings into karate this whole time. It would be worth the price of admission to see how Kreese & Silver would react to *that*. Side bonus is that Miguel would then have to end things with Sam, get over her, and either commit to dating Tori, or maybe explore some bisexual feelings he may or may not have toward Robby.

by Anonymousreply 163April 18, 2021 10:55 PM

R163 It would effectively be Queer As Folk if they did that.

by Anonymousreply 164April 18, 2021 11:06 PM

R163 That sounds like the final season of 13 reasons why.

by Anonymousreply 165April 19, 2021 2:38 PM

I hope season 4 explores the blossoming love of Dimitri and Hawk, culminating in a beautiful lovemaking scene set to Glory of Love where they both shout Galory and light up cigarettes.

by Anonymousreply 166April 19, 2021 2:43 PM

R166 from my quick survey of social media platforms, a good percentage (maybe over half) of the teen fans of COBRA KAI seem to want Hawk & Demetri to become a gay couple. Heartwarming to see that reaction. Hopefully the showrunners pay attention, and give the kids the gay representation they want and deserve.

by Anonymousreply 167April 19, 2021 2:59 PM

I just want everyone on ghost show to be friends and get together for thanksgiving dinner.

Some kids watching the show ship Robby with that random background CK fighter hottie Doug.

Makes more aesthetic sense to me than Robby/Tory, Robby/Sam, or Robby/Miguel. I’m here for it.

In what episode of season 4 will does Hawk deep dick Dimitri? They gotta up their game if Cruel Summer is doing 90s gay teens.

Hawk can deep deck me

by Anonymousreply 172April 30, 2021 11:22 AM

Xolo said in a recent interview that he doesn’t want Miguel/Sam endgame, and I have to agree. Most highschool flings turn sour or fizzle out and come to nothing, but theirs is particularly toxic not to mention boring to watch.

Xolo seems to like the idea of Miguel/Robby, and he enjoys flirting with Tanner, so....

Ralph Macchio is confusingly attractive in certain lights.

Like, he isn’t a hottie, generally and conventionally and universally. Not like Zabka. But then there’ll be the occasional scene of his in CK where you have to double-take and watch it again, drawn to look at him like “wow.....ok....nice”. It’s a strange kind of screen presence.

I'm curious to see how they incorporate the insanity that was KK3 into the show.

by Anonymousreply 178May 28, 2021 9:17 AM

Who cares about Terry Silver. Will Ron Thomas and his bald head be back this season?

by Anonymousreply 179May 28, 2021 12:31 PM

R174 Zabka looks like Ellen Degeneres

He looks good FOR HIS AGE, Like Ralph, but neither are “hotties” at this point

by Anonymousreply 180August 27, 2021 10:23 PM

Ron Thomas looks better than both of them.

by Anonymousreply 181August 27, 2021 11:41 PM

Silver's actor looks really old now so no thank you r177 he'd look like Macchio's dad (and not in a sexy way)

Renewed for a fifth season.

It's rare Netflix renews a show for season 5 these days.

However, the show is still a hit for them and it's probably dirt cheap to produce. (At least it looks like it.)

by Anonymousreply 184August 28, 2021 7:02 PM

I was trying to think of another Netflix show that made it past 5 seasons.

by Anonymousreply 185August 29, 2021 12:57 AM

Grace & Frankie, Bojack Horseman, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards are Netflix originals that have gone five+ seasons.

Cobra Kai was on Youtube Red for its first two seasons, so Netflix has only been on the hook for it since S3.

I never saw Karate Kid 3. Did I miss anything worth checking out?

by Anonymousreply 187August 29, 2021 1:09 AM

R187, they have TONS of flashbacks so if you missed something or you can't remember something you'll catch up easily. (Flashbacks to the point where they can be annoying as hell.)

R186, These days they seem to top out at 4 seasons with them shooting entire seasons and then splitting them. On My Block, Castlevania, Carmen Sandiego, Dear White People, Atypical & Ozark are all ending at Season 4.

The Crown, of course, is still going and Money Heist is getting a Season 5.

[quote] I never saw Karate Kid 3. Did I miss anything worth checking out?

Absolutely not.

I’m a member of a few Cobra Kai Facebook pages and they’re EXTREMELY anti gay male, EXTREMELY

The actor Tanner Buchanan posted a pic of another actor and called him hot while working out and the comments are horrible

Mind you this is the same group and same people are promote lesbian relationships on the show

If you’re gonna be anti gay be anti gay across the board, my whole like I’ve CONSTANTLY heard how wrong, gross and disgusting it is to find men attractive, but women finding women attractive is great and hot , I’m fucking sick of it, this is one of the main reasons so many gay men are fucked up

I would love a gay male character on this show just to piss these scared pussified straight boys off

by Anonymousreply 190November 11, 2021 5:57 PM

Is Tanner gay?

by Anonymousreply 191November 11, 2021 6:17 PM

R191 I don’t know, I think he said it jokingly

For an anti bullying show, the fanbase hasn’t gotten the hint

I’m just tired of it, we constantly hear this shit out whole lives, constantly
