Is it that some people only understand broad humor and don't get irony? Is it a sign of sociopathy? Is a sense of humor genetic or learned? I have concluded over the past few years that people that lack humor also tend to be self important and a big pain in the ass. Is this your experience too DL?
People without a sense of humor

My boss was like that, self important, pain in the ass, qualified for his job, petty little bitch who kept a list of all the employees he hated in his desk marked with red dots. No humor at all. In fact I think a similar trait is guys who speak with a low volume low tone sort of like "just between you and me buddy" kind of whisper all the time are usually humorless evil sociopaths.

My sister always has her narc/borderline radar up thinking everyone is against her so she doesn't get any joke like if you rib her about something she did or how she does something. No fun allowed with her.

I’m sorry, SIR, but this is a feminist bookstore. There is no humor section.

When womyn stop being killed by penises then I will have a sense of humor.
Until then I don’t find much to laugh about, OP.

How can they laugh when they need to concentrate on clenching to keep the stick up their ass (or twat)? 😬

People without a sense of humor are generally speaking a nightmare to work with: pompous, self-important, and strangely literal-minded. I don’t spend time with people like that voluntarily so I can’t tell you what they’re like in social situations.

Yes, they are often sociopaths. If a person doesn’t have a cluster B personality but they still don’t have a sense of humor that often means they are of low intelligence.

I've never heard my brother-in-law laugh. Ever. Occassionally he gets joy from making his daughter cry, but I've never seen a genuine laugh from him. And yes, he's a manipulative sociopath.

My partner's uncle is like that. Never, never laughs, and his version of a smile is a quick, barely noticeable twitch of the lips. He also thinks that he's an expert on everything. He must be a joy to live with, and I feel sorry for his wife, who is a pleasant, outgoing woman.
I think that the uncle suffers from the infamous small man syndrome. He's about five foot 3, and dyes his grey hair black. His head is too large for the size of his body, so he's not exactly an impressive looking person. He compensates for this by his arrogance.

I have noticed people who cannot laugh at themselves often have underlying psychopathology of one form or another -- they often seem personality-disordered esque.
One of the most humorless people I've known was schizophrenic, not personality-disordered. I assume flat affect and lack of humor are related in some people.

There are LOTS of reasons people don’t find others amusing. Often, it has to do with under-educated armchair shrinks who aren’t nearly as astute or entertaining as they think they are.

I suggested that a friend watch "Young Sheldon." He told me "that kid needs to be slapped."

Stupid people don't understand humor.

R11 - I have a very good sense of humor (if I do say so), except about myself. I've never been good at being teased. I am schizophrenic and I don't laugh hardly at all. Don't know what to make of all this.

Often, humorless people are on the Autism spectrum.
Humor is a social concept. It requires you to be able to imagine yourself in a stranger's situation, and see the absurdity of that predicament. Autistic people have a hard time feeling empathy and can't pick up on social cues.

This cuts both ways folks. People bemoaning others lack of “humor” are often vicious abusers and bigots. We all know this is true too.

Th only thing to which I can ascribe it is improper timing of non-procreative activity on the part of certain parents.

r15 in my example, I think the lack of humor was related to this particular individual's experience of schizophrenia. He found humor in nothing. But I also think it was related to his general flat affect.
The inability to laugh at oneself seems more aligned with personality disorders, not schizophrenia. These people can laugh and make jokes -- just not about themselves.
Again. Just my observations.

That's not funny, OP.

R6 Literal minded is a good decsription. And I do find this often accompanies those who lack humour.

No humor = boring, IMO.
On the other hand, there are asshole people who do have a good sense of humor.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 9, 2020 5:34 PM |
r22 it's funny -- I almost resent it when assholes make me laugh.

I have recently moved to a smaller city and that is the one thing I have noticed (as opposed to my time in the bigger city) -- absolutely no one has a sense of humor. Irony goes nowhere and sarcasm is taken literally ("don't be so mean"). I've yet to meet one person who can tell the difference between humorous self-deprecation ("Oh what a dope I am!") and being too hard on myself. I do have the Irish gift for inventive and fluid wordplay, but it goes for nought. I know that might prompt a "Gee, then maybe you're not funny" comment, but I can recognize this talent in myself and certainly in others.
I never tease anyone unless that is the relationship that I have with someone, and it must always be a two-way street. If you tease someone who doesn't engage, or whose humor is not on that plane, it's just mean and should be avoided at all costs.

Lack of sense of humor seems like low intelligence to me.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 9, 2020 5:45 PM |
People with autism have trouble with jokes because their brains process language differently.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 9, 2020 5:47 PM |
What about genetics? Is there a humor gene? Are verbal people more humorous than math people?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 9, 2020 5:50 PM |
Poltical correctness has drained the life out of humor these days. PC bitches are so anal retentive and dull.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 9, 2020 5:50 PM |
r25 my dad is not particularly intelligent but has a good sense of humor and good taste in humor
