I was watching an ad for some gross Jersey Shore "vacation" reality show and realized I hadn't seen Mtv since the late 80s-early 90s? I remember switching to VH-1 and loved their "pop up video" segments. Sadly, it is not defunct. Does anyone still watch the garbage it has become now?
Does Mtv even show music videos anymore?

No, it doesn't and no I don't watch it.
Also, animal planet is always airing some reality show about moonshiners.
Without any animals in it...

I remember when E was entertaining and Bravo showed a lot of shows focused on the arts. Now, it's all Toddlers and Tiaras and Honey Boo Boo shit.

YouTube killed the music video channel.
Sing that to the tune of "video killed the radio star"

MTV hasn't shown music videos since the mid-90s. It's all The Real World's fault.

My cable system has MTV2 which I thought they started to show music videos but even it doesn't have music videos anymore. VH1 doesn't have music videos anymore either, but CMT still does.
My cable system (UVerse) does have Stingray though that has over 50 channels that play music and you can go to the music video section and select many videos to watch.

VH-1 is still on R6?

VH-1 isn't defunct, it is still on my cable lineup but it doesn't show music videos any longer either, it is mostly bad reality shows.

Yes VH-1 is still on my cable system UVerse, I was wrong about it showing reality shows, it seems to be mostly black comedies like "My Wife and Kids" "The Fresh Prince" "Living Single" "Martin" some movies and shows like "Cheaters" they have 8 straight hours of "Cheaters" on Saturday.

Remember when VH-1 used to be the adult contemporary MTV?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 8, 2020 4:47 PM |
VH-1 used to be where the "elders" who had aged from Mtv and rap stars went. I haven't seen it in years so I'm guessing my cable doesn't offer it.

The VH-1 line up at link, they apparently have RuPaul's Drag Race: Vegas Revue, RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars and RuPaul's Drag Race. It looks like they are trying to appeal to mainly a black audience.

I Heart Nick Carter, I didn't even know he had a show, I might check that out to see how bad it is. I am guessing there won't be any guest appearances from Aaron.

A lot of channels suck now. I liked A&E when they used to show PBS mystery series. The History Channel was excellent when it was about history.

The History Channel seems to have de-evolved into non-stop shows about the Nazis and aliens.

People complain about MTV and VH1 but a large audience must want to see those reality shows and reruns if they're always playing them. Speaking of reruns, LOGO........

MTV aired music video blocks in the 2000s. Very early in the morning from 3am to 9am. You know when nobody was at home or awake? TRL aired weekdays but I kinda hated it. It was so tacky and lame. Always manufactured celebrities and pop stars there to promote something. They didn't care about independent musicians or foreign artists either. Also they never played the full video, just the first thirty seconds just to fit in more time for celebrity bull. I do miss their music shows like Making the Band, Making The Video and Diary too.
VH1 aired music videos late at night and had the Top 20 Countdown every Sunday afternoon. I miss it because it was so much better than TRL, it featured a lot of alternative rock, R&B and some foreign artists. VH1 also had their Rock Docs, Behind The Music, VH1 Goes Inside..., music-related films, Pop-Up Video and a bunch of pop culture shows which were interesting like I Love The 80s.
BET had a lot of music videos too. I loved 106 & Park, it was so much better than TRL in every way. Ran for 2 hours and had more interesting guests and felt more in touch with modern audiences. Hip-hop and R&B were the most popular genre in the 2000s. Also you could see the hottest fashion trends and dancing too. I loved Midnight Love and RapCity too and BET All Access.
I remember MTV2 used to air a lot of music videos, they had specialized blocks like their version of Headbanger's Ball (heavy metal), Subterranean (alternative and indie) and Sucka Free (hip-hop). I also liked their weird animated series. Of course they got overtaken by reruns of MTV reality shows and eventually dropped music in favor of reality shows and sitcom repeats.

Is it a money thing? Do all the Viacom channels (including BET, CMT, and Logo) run sitoms all day because that's keeping the lights on?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 9, 2020 1:29 AM |
WTF happened to Logo? It started out as gay programming now it's all reruns of Three's Company and stuff. They do rerun The Nanny which I enjoy.

Comedy Central is The Office and South Park channel.
MTV is the Ridiculousness and Teen Mom channel.
VH1 is BET number 2 now.
Logo is what TV Land used to be.

What is the point of having all of these channels (or radio stations, or brands, or businesses) if they suck? If they can’t maintain a quality standard due to money issues then just fucking close already. America used to have standards.

MTV really serves no purpose anyway. They still had cultural relevancy in the 2000s due to their shitty reality shows which was still a novel concept. It's funny seeing nostalgia over irredeemable shit like Laguna Beach, The Hills, The Osbournes, Newlyweds, Super Sweet 16 and Jersey Shore. TRL really wasn't that good looking back, way too focused on celebrities that were pushed onto us by corporations not actual musical talent.
I'll admit the staged dating shows like Room Raiders and Parental Control are guilty pleasures as well as Pimp My Ride and Real World/Road Rules Challenge. The Real World, Wildboyz and Jackass acted as good softcore gay porn too.

Maybe I'm dense but what is TRL?

No, dear. MTV stopped playing music videos in the late 2000s.

You can blame these two for the current state of Viacom networks like MTV, VH1 and Comedy Central.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 9, 2020 2:03 AM |
TRL is Total Request Live which was hosted by Carson Daly. I don’t know if you called in to the show, or emailed, or filled out a form online? But it was like a radio call-in request show, and they showed the top requested videos. I never really watched it because by then, pop music was AWFUL.
Anyway, it was the natural evolution of the show DIAL MTV. I actually called in to that. I believe the beautiful Adam Curry often hosted it. That was back in the late 80s and very early 90s.
It’s so sad what’s happened to MTV and VH1 and MTV2, but then it’s sad what’s happened to culture in general.

Total Request Live. It was a daily music countdown show that often featured the hottest pop stars and celebrities. It was hosted by Carson Daly during its early years. Many consider it a main contributor to the downfall of American popular music lol. It used to piss me off how they pushed manufactured pop artists over talented musicians and also they didn't even play the full video either.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 9, 2020 2:08 AM |
OP why would they? The internet exists. Kids nowadays don't watch music videos because they make their own on TikTok, but even if they did, they'd just watch them on YouTube whenever they want to.

I think Bravo was basically done the moment Andy Cohen took over. Before he got his clutches on it and dumbed it (and America) down with all that Housewives shit, it was a great channel focused solely on the arts.
LOGO is probably the biggest disappointment of all. As others have noted, it moved away from its gay channel origins many years ago. Now it's all sitcom reruns.
TVLand also went down as far as I'm concerned. It used to be such an interesting mix of old, classic TV shows but then gradually turned into the full-time Andy Griffith/King of Queens channel, so I let it slide. For those who love classic TV (like myself), you're much better off now with channels like MeTV, Antenna TV, and COZI, which have all (at least so far) stayed true to their mission statements.

R27 aww Britney looks so cute. That outfit is a different story.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 9, 2020 11:02 AM |
Britney looked so vibrant and healthy. She was never known for her fashion sense outside of her music videos though.
TRL sucked because it was basically created as a way for MTV to say "look we still give a shit about music!" while still toning down their music content in favor of more reality shows and celebrity stuff. TRL paled in comparison to their earlier MTV music shows like Alternative Nation, Headbanger's Ball and Yo MTV Raps! That's because TRL was not about music, it wasn't about any cultures or on the cutting edge. It mostly showed safe bubblegum pop acts pushed by big corporations and ClearChannel and Disney. But by the early 2000s, the internet sites became the main source of new music and trends, Napster, Yahoo and iTunes anyway.
106 & Park on BET was much more in touch with modern trends as hip-hop, R&B, crunk, reggae and urban sounds began to displace rock and sugary pop.
