Gay Etsy Ad
There's a new Etsy commercial where a man is bringing his boyfriend home for the holidays.
They are all sitting around the tree and the dad says to the boyfriend, "We didn't forget about you!" and hands him a gift.
Inside is a needlepointed ornament of the two guys.

I saw it, I hated it. They are trying to show black men as weak. When ate they going to do one with a white couple? There always trying to mess with black men and black masculinity. Just like with that AIDS/HIV commercial with the two black guys kissing at the end.
I wish they'd show commercials with white men like that and stop trying to feminize black men.
That's why I hated it. I'm gay, but not feminine, and those guys were.

What? They walked in, sat down to dinner, cut to the tree, presentation of the ornament.
What's feminine about that?
Your noogin is screwed on wrong.

I prefer white people be the face of gayness. I don't like the feminine shit.

WHAT IS FEMININE ABOUT THE AD?

The whole thing was a scam on black men, I just hated the whole concept of the commercial.

Dear R3... you’ve got splinters in the windmill of your mind. Somebody blew out your pilot light.

Whatever. You can't give a reasonable answer.
We'll agree to differ.

Yeah, it's so feminine, the way he opened the folding chair for him at the table.
Weirdo.

Most of the ad is very well-done: it shows the sheer horror of being an outsider at a family Christmas party. It really captures what's awful about the holidays.

Just saw it. Don’t think of myself as a sentimental type—or susceptible to manipulative advertising—but it totally worked for me. I almost got misty.
As an aside, I’d recently bought a few things on Etsy. Now I’m even happier I did.
I’d recently bought a few things on Etsy. Now I’m even happier I did. And there’s nothing especially feminine about being loving and affectionate.
I think I'm going to buy something on etsy. I liked the commercial.

HUH???
You're bonkers. It's a charming ad!
See? when they do make an ad about black people, IT'S STILL NEVER RIGHT!
Microaggressions!!! Waaaaaah!

No [italic]almost[/italic] for me, I did get misty.
R3/R7, a lot of Etsy’s commercials feature racial/ethnic minorities, are they all a scam?

I like it..I'm old and I remember a time when we had almost zero representation in the media.

I just saw it today and kinda shocked by the gay couple but more so by the black family.

R19 You actually believe that troll poster was an actual black man? By the way, thanks for showing us your casual racism.

Who gets the ornament when they break up?

It felt a bit awkward to me, but that could be internal self loathing as a gay white guy. Good for Etsy for shaking things up.

Where we are today is there is no composition of that couple in the commercial that would be exempt from criticism.
And the critic now has one or more platforms for broadcasting those inane thoughts, which previously would have been limited to only the members of the critic's own household, or perhaps a few poor work colleagues.
It felt a bit awkward to me
That was the point. The actor captured the awkwardness, especially during the taking off the coat part.
When ate they going to do one with a white couple?
Geez, if they did it with a white couple, people would be complaining about #Etsysowhite and how they need to show diversity in the gay community.

The bottom retains all seasonal decorations.

I think the problem is that they didn't show one guy giving the other one a new circular saw before kissing.

R25 I am a black man, 32 years old. I don't like that commercial and that shouldn't be hard to believe. I have my reasons for why I don't.
I just didn't like it and I have my reasons! I prefer white men being the face of gayness, not black men. If you understood history, you might understand.

I'm sorry you did not like it, R3.
I thought it was good. Their race was not the point for me. Just that they were two guys at a Xmas party. Imagine that happening in the 1960, regardless of race.

I think it was great that they used a black family, given how much homophobia there is in that community.

R38 Whatever, it's way worse in white society. Remember, it's white people who put all of these anti gay laws in place, not black people.
Don't ever forget that either!

Yes, there is homophobia in some black people, but let’s not pretend that everything is peachy keen with the gays in white households.

Agree, R38. I like that Etsy is trying to set an example to the black community using the modeling of normal behavior and how to behave properly in the commercial. However you look at it, Etsy, it is doing a good thing.

Reading the comments on the YouTube post, they are 99% positive. The target audience may not be DLers.

Bringing your boyfriend home to a close family during Kwanaza has to be nerve-wracking. This is kind of like The Family Stone, but the family seems nicer in the commercial.

R41 " behave properly" and "normal behavior"?
What does that mean? Are you trying to say black people aren't "Civilized" or " Normal"?
Your whole comment is suspect, and sounds like a very white thing to say.

When the dad says, “We didn’t forget about you,” his reading is totally not believable. It’s filled with “I-can’t-believe-my-black-son-is-a-poof-who-takes-it-up-the-ass-but-I’ll-pretend-I’m-ok-with-his-little-friend.”

It would have been even better if the BF was white.

My parents were always sweet to my boyfriends at Christmas. For example, when I brought home a guy when I was in grad school, my dad gave him cash just like he gave me. When ever we would be heading out for the day, he'd slap cash on him. Not even in my presence. My boyfriend thought it was weird. He came from a poorish family. I told him that my dad showed his affection by giving money and he was giving him the same as he was giving me, to show that he was important like his own son, and it was not a lot of money, really, not for my dad, and my bf should take the money with a smile and thank you.
