What a horrible charisma free actor he is. I’m watching this for the first time. I had heard it wasn’t good but I didn’t realize it was a literal dumpster fire.
Anthony Rapp was the worst part of the shiteous Rent movie

It's terrible. A good friend of mine LOVES this musical and asked me to watch it with her. It was so difficult pretending not to hate it (don't want to spoil her delight in it). Honestly, this comes across as one of those projects that never would've done as well as it has if the creator hadn't died. It's one of the worst musicals I've ever seen. At least Cats had a couple of good songs thrown in.

He has a good sized penis, as the pic of him posted online (and then taken down) will attest.

EVERYTHING about that movie was a dumpster fire, starting with the play itself, and going on to the decision to hire the original cast. Who were in their fucking thirties when the movie was made.
The thing is, all the characters in the movie act like self-absorbed dickheads, they ruin their own lives and the lives of anyone stupid enough to get close to them, and they don't care because they're to busy telling each other they're geniuses and the height of cool. This sort of behavior is only slightly forgivable when committed by the young, if you see a person over 30 acting that way you want to kill it with fire.

Anthony is still cute. And he was very cute in Dazed and Confused.

I can't STAND Anthony Rapp. Kevin Spacey is a creep, but fuck, I hate Rapp with a passion.

At least he's stopped wearing that fucking scarf all the time.

Only know RENT from the movie. The only good song imo was ‘Goodbye, Love’ (of which the best part was a deleted scene), and you have to get past the cringe to even enjoy that. Rapp is credible as Mark, provided you see Mark as a smug preachy asexual drip with nothing about him.
Also, the way the film was shot, lit and coloured makes it unpleasant to watch, somehow. I understand they were going for dark and grimy, but they took it too far, to the point where it’s gross enough to look at that you want a shower afterward.

Was that whole thing a deleted scene or only part of it? Why do I think I saw all of that before in the movie? Maybe because I’ve listened to the songs so many times I didn’t realize it wasn’t in the movie.

When all the characters who didn’t die of AIDS grew up, they all voted for Trump.

It seems cringe now, in the same way that Hair seemed cringe in the 1980s. Any sort of musical that captures the zeitgeist of a particular time will then seem cliched in the proceeding generation. I think in another generation, Rent will be cool again. Not as cool as Hair, as Hair really is a phenomenal musical. Rent suffers from too many cliches and AIDS deaths to really be high theater in the way Hair is, but it holds it own.
As for the film itself, it was bad. Like others have said, having the original cast was a bad choice. I normally like using the original cast, but in this case, they were too old. And Rapp is ugly.
Still better than Wicked.

Why couldn’t they get the whole original cast? They recasted the women.

The boy-sized dickhead kind of ruins it.

He looks like the gay version of Alan Tudyk (and yes I'm giving Alan the benefit of the doubt).

There are some shows that are best left on the stage.

Shot during a San Francisco summer, at the request of the director, with laughable digital condensation of breath. Also, poor Jesse L. Martin with a jacket masking his healthy LAW & ORDER gut in every medium shot. The movie actress, Rosario Dawson steals the film from the B'way originals. Too bad, fortunately young Larson's memory lives on through his philanthropic gifts - the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation and the Jonathan Larson Awards. Now that's class.

R13 daphne Rubin Vega and the woman who played Joanne were self aware enough to know that they were WAY too old for the roles so they declined to take part

Saw Rent, The Producers and Hamilton on Broadway All three were over rated, over hyped and of over priced and the films made from them did nothing to enhance their reputations and the first 2 flopped at the BO and the insufferably WOKE (and tedious) Hamilton was streamed on Disney. Not one of them produced a tune that has become a standard and me thinks that they are not going to be revived like Gypsy, West Side Story, Chicago, Cabaret. Fiddler on the Roof...

For bizarre reasons, I ended up seeing Rent three times (only once of my own accord) on Broadway while Rapp was in it.
He was actually quite good on stage, as I recall.

I actually hear Seasons of Love from Rent - that's about as close as it gets.

I avoided seeing it on stage or screen, but curiosity got the better of me when they did the live TV version. I had made the right choice. Meh.
