This English version of “Brokeback Mountain” is superb. I loved every minute of this visually stunning love story. If you want to warm your cold, black heart (like I just did!) then watch this!
OP It wasn't your heart that got warmed with this film...

Is it also shown in 4K UHD? I need to see dongs and holes in UHD. Great film though, truly heartwarming.

If they had done this in The Durrells in Corfu, their ratings would soar. Instead, we had to watch Keeley Hawes boring, stilted acting.

I love this movie. Yes, it’s heartwarming, but it’s also emotionally heartbreaking as the journey unfolds. “In God’s Country” shows a bleak, stark reality as this compelling love story emerges. Don’t miss it.

This was good. I love Josh O'Conner from The Crown and it was a quality gay film, which is rarity. The characters felt real and the acting was solid. Brokeback Mountain was the better of the two is we are comparing, but I did enjoy this.

All three films were excellent:: In God’s Own Country, Call Me By Your Name and Brokeback Mountain. They were all different, i.e., acting, story, writing, emotions, etc.
But if they were ever nominated in the same Best Picture category, I would have to vote for “In God’s Own Country.”

It was fantastic, especially their first sex scene, though the situation is kind of rapey when you think about it.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 6, 2020 3:57 PM |
I don't think it had the emotional impact of Brokeback Mountain. I have yet to see CMBYN. I think it's just that I'm annoyed by the fact that quality men around my age that I want to date are lusting after barely legals. I don't need it reinforced on screen. I did read the book and probably need to watch it. I made it mid we through We Are Who We Are and aborted around episode 6 or 7. I just hated all the characters, especially the lead boy.

Well, I'm one of those three posts, so you're obviously wrong, since I didn't post the others. And for what it's worth, I didn't like Call Me By Your Name, either. (Although I was happy James Ivory won an Oscar- even though the screenplay was meh- since he deserved a few for his body of work.)

Brokeback Mountain was filled with bisexuality! Stop referring to it as a masterpiece gay film, because it fucking wasn't! Fucking hell I hate you bisexuals who identify as gay and then write threads on films and TV series that you title "gay", when they are clearly bisexual films and series.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 6, 2020 5:18 PM |
For any gay man who came of age before 2010, it is obvious that Brokeback Mountain has nothing to do with bisexuality. R33, you display a hysterically angry set of issues.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 6, 2020 5:22 PM |
R34: No I have a brain fucktard. The film was bisexual. The men were bisexual. The "gay men" who dub it as a gay film, are the exact same type of bisexuals identifying as gay that I'm referring to. Those of us actual gay men who have intelligence know full well it's not a gay film. Even more reason to eradicate bisexuals from LG because you ruin everything that is suppose to be actually gay! Films, gay porn, EVERYTHING.

Brokeback Mountain had Heath Ledger put it in Michelle Williams' ass to underline that he missed putting it in Jake Gyllenhaal. That moment wasn't subtle but it appears to have flown over some heads...
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 6, 2020 5:31 PM |
What the fuck are you talking about? The two men weren't bisexual. They were closeted gay men who were forced to conform to society's norms in the 50s/60s.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 6, 2020 5:32 PM |
I believe Heaths character was 100% gay.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 6, 2020 5:32 PM |
They both were. And Gyllenhaal's character was the one who wanted to run away with him and start a life together.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 6, 2020 5:39 PM |
R37: So "gay men" are still gay when they have anal sex with women while thinking about men? GAY MEN DON'T FUCK WOMEN IN ANY WAY. Sociopathic bisexual men yet again infecting their sociopathy and retardation onto gay platforms and platforms in general, trying to convince people that "gay men" have sex with women!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 6, 2020 5:39 PM |
[Quote] GAY MEN DON'T FUCK WOMEN IN ANY WAY.
No closeted man has ever married a woman?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 6, 2020 5:44 PM |
R38: They enjoyed fucking the women! That's BISEXUALITY. Gay men don't enjoy sex with women! The ones who profess they do, are bisexuals identifying as gay! Plenty of closeted gay men haven't had sex with females, regardless of the time period! Again, further proof of the sociopathic bisexuals who infect everything and make most gay men fall for their BULLSHIT.

R14 I remember reading an interview with O'Connor who said, in his analysis of the character and the moment, the film has a happy ending but you know that this won' t last. The character feeling love for the first time, unsettled and not ready for a lifetime commitment. But the film tried to capture "the moment" in all its fullness.
It was a very good film. R25 The Finnish film, although with a "native Finn" and Syrian immigrant, was a different plot line. The Finnish kid was ok with his sexuality. I think the core of God's Own Country was the self-discovery, the emergence of different way to live, for the O'Connor character.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 6, 2020 5:53 PM |
R43. FFS do your research. You must be very young if you don't understand closeted gay men with wives and children. They're GAY.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 6, 2020 5:55 PM |
The characters in In Gods Country were also "okay" with their sexuality, that was not the plot conflict.

Well, his fear about the folks in the bar knowing he was gay, his refusal to acknowledge the buy he'd fucked, his only fucking when drunk his creeping home and his folks knowing nothing about him... fucking in a toilet, not being able to establish a connection - evidenced by his attack on his friend's body, desperate... his friend slowing him down, making him realize that actually two humans can be human to each other while fucking
I guess we have different ideas about "accepting"

Weekend is a fantastic movie. A real classic of gay cinema. The last truly great gay themed film.
Beach Rats is a piece of shit. I'd blame it on the fact that a straight woman wrote and directed it, but we've seen plenty of gay films made by gay men that are even worse. However, Harris Dickinson was amazing in it.

R48 You misunderstood the bar scene. The landlady and the other migrant worker, who was flicking beer at Georghe, thought he was a Romany gypsy (which might be true). That's why the landlady called him a 'DIRTY bastard' when he attacked the other migrant. She was refering to his skin colour, not his sexuality. When John first sees Georghe, he also judges him on his skin colour and asks if he's a 'paki' ( short for pakistani and VERY offensive in the Uk). He also calls him 'gypo' several times. Romany gypsy's are pretty much disliked throughout Europe including Romania. Their origins are north Indian. When they migrated to Romania they were mistaken for egyptians and that's where the word 'gypsy' comes from.
Johnny's family and old school friend (she told him outside the pub she had a 'friend' who he would like) knew he was gay. His gran and dad were aware early on about him and G. Remember when Johnny was upset that Georghe wouldn't stay in the house with him? He wasn't bothered about them being caught in bed together. He was getting drunk because he was cut off and starved of affection. He was still a teenager and was responsible for taking care of the farm while his old school friends were leaving home and living carefree.

I agree, R60. And quite implausible.
Halfway through this little story they tell us that small two-man farms can't survive against the bigger industrial farms.
But at the end of this implausible little movie we're told that the two protagonists have a small two-man farm.
In other words, there won't be a sequel because it's inevitable this romantic implausible story will end in failure.

He's worked quite a lot in UK tv, films and theatre, R65. He had six or seven solid IMDB credits since GOC, two of them tv series, and this doesn't include pre-COVID stage work. He's doing pretty well of his GOC exposure, it seems.

by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 7, 2020 11:38 AM |
He has. Seen him in a few things. The detective series set in Amsterdam he plays quite a scary drug dealer for one. So many of you are picking holes in the script saying it's impossible for small farms to make it work. In the U.K. there are many people taking on small holdings and farms and surviving well. They appeal to a fast growing consumer base of people trying to avoid supermarkets. Grass fed meat sold by butchers who can tell you the farm their meat has come from. Local grown produce that has little carbon footprint. Fresh Milk. Free range eggs responsible farmed. So for me, that part of the story is spot on. Why can't the relationship survive? They have something worthwhile to work for together. Perhaps the strong local atmosphere and accents make it difficult for a more international market which is a shame. My all time favourite gay film. In all that grim, small town miserable life, a happy ending. Finally, a gay film with a wonderful positive ending. I cried and cried. Unlike CMBYN, take the sunshine and AH's arse out of it, nothing. And the book? Fuck me, utter, utter, boring, over thought artistic wank. A sequel? Please no. They don't even fuck again.

Revolutionary is such a big word, so I will say GOC is refreshing – it’s a piece in which being gay is not the cause of the dramatic conflict, the way most “gay” pieces are, but it’s the solution. In the context of this film, had Johnny been straight, he would have left the family farm and betrayed his family’s heritage, for no girl would agree to live with him in this God forsaken place, while for a gay Romanian farm boy that same place is, well, God’s Own Country. And this is why his father and grandmother, who experienced the bitter departure of Johnny’s mother, are accepting of him being not only in a gay relationship, but also with a foreigner – two big taboos they are willing to ignore so their way of life can be maintained. It has everything to do with interests and harsh realizations, the way Life evolves, and very little to do with people all of a sudden becoming open minded (the way it happens in the final act of way too many eager to please gay films).

One of my favorite gay films! I found it scrolling through the LGBT offerings on a streaming platform about a year ago. Usually, the films are dreadful. GOC was a pleasant surprise. I watch it at least once a month. I think part of the reason is because it is Brokeback Mountain with a happy ending.
