it's interesting how even with all of his views (half a billion!!!!!) he hasn't been able to transition into any kind of sustainable career. His music isn't any or better worse than any of the other pop boys out there, but he just can't seem to catch on

Sugar wasn't his song. It was producer/DJ Robin Schulz's song with Yates being the featured singer.
Yates had a record deal before Sugar and his first EP was produced by Pharrell Williams but Sugar put him on the map. His record company seems to like him, setting him up with big name collaborators, so I'm sure he's doing fine in small pond Canada even though he's not had a followup with the visibility of Sugar.
It reminds me of how Aussie singer Daniel Merriweather had an international hit singing on Mark Ronson's 2007 song "Stop Me" then just petered about as a middling R&B singer on his own.
