Elton said he was bisexual in a 1976 Rolling Stone interview, but like Bowie, I'm not sure whether people took him super seriously about that. At that scale of popularity, the man or woman on the street just saw what they wanted to see, and assumed it was creativity or eccentricity. He wasn't the first to hint around at his sexuality (Dusty Springfield did it 6 years earlier) but the songs he was singing at that point were about women. And of course there was the whole marrying a woman thing.

It seems incredible to say it wasn't always known that Elton was gay, because to look back now he was never really in. But he wasn't truly out until the 90s.
