Oscar Wilde Movies and TV Shows

I just finished watching The Trials of Oscar Wilde, starring Peter Finch. It was quite daring for 1960.

In one scene, Oscar’s wife Constance says “It’s terrible when a man comes between a husband and his wife.”

Peter Finch was great, of course, but ultimately, I think he was miscast. The real revelation was the adorable John Fraser as Bosie. Fraser died just a few weeks ago at age 90, and was survived by his longtime companion.

Please name some other Oscar Wilde movies that are worth seeing.

Didn't we have a poster named "Bosie" in one thread or another, a few months back? He was annoying the fuck out of some other poster, and neither would let it go.

Lord Alfred (Bosie) was the third son of the Marquess of Queensbury. It is a widely known but little discussed fact that insanity runs in the Queensbury line.

Oscar Wilde played a prominent role in a British television series in 1978 called 'Lillie', which centered on Lillie Langtry, the famous mistress of the Prince of Wales and later, King Edward VII. As a royal mistress, for a time, she was the center of London society, and it seems counted Wilde among her close friends.

Here's a link to Episode 5 which includes the interaction of the two characters.

True. I watched this film about a year ago for the first time, and while the dialogue was sharp (much of it Wilde’s words of course), I could not see Finch as Wilde. He was just a body mouthing his words, same as Rupert Everett.

They also released the Robert Morley film in 1960.

What happened with Bosie?

by Anonymousreply 8November 28, 2020 9:19 PM

Bosie spent years trashing Oscar and denying any homosexual involvement with him whatever, though he softened his line later in life. Subsequently he married a woman, and fathered a son who died young in a sanitarium. Douglas became a noted anti-semite and crank who ended up in prison after slandering Winston Churchill.
