I’ve noticed that very few gay men hike. By hiking, I mean hiking alone or with one or two friends. My suspicion is that hiking is too quiet and solitary, no brunch or Broadway. What’s your experience?
I hike quite a bit, mostly winter hiking. But it is with a mostly straight group in New England

Quite a few in the White Mountain National Forest.

How do you know whether or not gay men hike or not? Is there some sort of check in portal where you declare your sexuality before you hit the trails?
Evidently you haven’t been to Griffith Park or Runyon in LA any day of the week in LA. Or just about any other national park. I know tons of gay guys who hike. Quit trying to force a stereotype OP.

Take a hike!

Runyon isn’t hiking, I live a couple streets away, so I know what it’s all about.

I enjoy hiking very much. It’s the perfect way to clear your head after working all week, and it re-energises me.

Of course Runyon is hiking. And yes that goes on but its walking up and down a hill. There are literally hundreds of trails in LA County. Not all of them are for fucking OP

I took hiking and backpacking as my PE in college and was a long term Boy Scout with my hiking merit badge.
The first great love of my life was a chubby straight frat guy that hiked the Appalachian Trail one summer and came back ripped as fuck and a confirmed insatiable bottom. I met him a few days after he got off the trail and enjoyed him for six months.

I hike and kayak a lot in the Hudson Valley and Berkshires. A good friend and her wife join me sometimes. It’s my meditation.

I take long walks (8-10 miles) several times a week in the mountains/forests near me. I take (with my partner) long overnight backpacking trips several times a year.
Not just an "exurban" thing... when I lived in LA I hiked regularly - alone often- in Angeles National Forest, Baldy, Idylwild...
I actually think there's a larger percentage of "gay hikers" than there are gay pool players, gay motorcycle riders, gay golfers....

I hiked a lot in Switzerland, downhill as much as possible.

I guess I've watched too many Datelines and 48 Hrs. to go off into the wilderness alone- or even with someone. Someone always disapears or dies.

Um, I'm in the Pacific Northwest (Portland) and there are billions of gay hikers here, both solo and in groups. Seriously, the one thing you can count on among the gays is that they'll be up for a hike (that includes the brunch gays and the club gays). The Cascades are very close to the city.
It's not really gay-specific. If you want to find hikers, go to where there's a lot of good hiking options. People move to the Pac NW for that.

I almost went Gay Hiking.
But then I realized my hiking buddy had to put Corny Visual AIDS on everything and now he's dead to me.
