However, though OP said he's in California and he doesn't expect it to be happening everywhere, I'm in the middle of the country in a red state bordering the south, and where virtually everyone is a born-again fundamentalist Christian, and my young friends are similar to OP's nephew.

I have friends of all ages, and interact with people from all walks of life in various community and semi-professional theaters. We don't really talk about their sex lives in detail, but it has become clear that a lot of high school and college age boys and men who look and act straight and no one would expect them to be gay have sex with both males and females.

They do it because they're horny and it's fun and they don't have the fear of being called queer and faggot and of being ostracized, the way it used to be. I liken it to the fact in my late teens and early 20s, I had sex a few times with women. It was fun and interesting and I liked the women, but I never for a moment thought I was straight or even really bisexual, in terms of desire. And after the age of about 23, I never did it or wanted to do it with a woman again.

Also, I have seven nephews, all of them born-again fundamentalist Christians, and I feel certain three of them are gay. I actually don't find this all that surprising - I think sexuality is definitely on a spectrum rather than a binary, and as the world in general becomes more accepting and progressive, people who might previously have only had private thoughts or fantasies about dating/sex outside of their primary preference are going to be a lot more open to physically participating.
