Patti Smith, for all her kookiness, seems to have done right by her children. I follow her daughter on Instagram - she comes off as very intelligent, grounded and compassionate.

Her son, Jackson, used to play on stage w/her band as well.

This will probably get me eviscerated on here, but I have mixed feelings about Patti. I love some of her music, appreciate her wisdom, but simultaneously have always sort of felt there was a profound arrogance about her—the "I am normal and humble and have grit, but I also an ARTISTE" -type of thing. Also, she has very limited musical talent. Watching her repeatedly strum a D chord on guitar while reciting her spoken word poetry, and then having dolts like Seth Meyers looking on in awe as though they're witnessing the messiah is truly embarrassing.

R4 I thought the song was good but I know nothing about her but her arrogance. Thank god someone else has died and she can groan and mourn it like she’s the first one it’s ever happened to.

r4, I know what you mean, but I think her allure is more about her charisma - and her writing - not her musical skill.

I always found it interesting that Patti totally checked out of NYC and moved to Michigan to raise her kids. Almost completely dropped out to live a simple family life in Middle America. Then got back into creative arts when children were grown. Strikes me as grounded and well prioritized. Also, the fact that she moved to Rockaway vs Manhattan when she came back to NYC.
Unlike Mapplethorpe who was a self-promoting, excessively ambitious hustler until the end who screwed over people to ensure he got the limelight and all the recognition, fame and money.

How do we know where she lives? I just read she lives by Chloe Sevigny in Manhattan and Chloe watches her.

Chloe "watches" her? She used to have a townhouse in the Village.
