But we’re getting one for covid? Is an HIV vaccine harder to make?
Why is there no HIV vaccine

Because HIV initially just affected gays, Haitians/Africans and drug addicts. Covid kills breeders.

R1 is right. If Covid was only infecting gays, we’d be on our own.

The short answer for non-scientists:
[quote]HIV behaves unlike most other viruses in some important ways. Usually, when a person is infected with a virus, their immune system creates antibodies that target the bug. That’s usually the starting point for researchers, who work to develop drugs that can imitate that process (but without causing the recipient to develop a full blown reaction to the virus). What’s tricky about HIV, however, is that when a person is infected with the virus, that same process of developing antibodies isn’t triggered.

Lets see....the average cost of HIV drugs is 2000-3000 PER MONTH...or in excess of $30,000 ANNUALLY. What do you think the reason for no vaccine is ?

Isn't anyone else wondering about this? If the response at R3 is correct, that's one thing. But I can't get past the fact (pointed out by R4) that HIV is a HUGE money-maker for pharmaceutical companies. Isn't it just possible that all that money rolling in from minority patients is keeping researchers from actively looking for a possible HIV vaccine. You never hear about any vaccine research for HIV patients. It's pretty disgusting if that's the case.

R5, what?

My sister is suffering HIV. Have a great day!

The FDA have just approved a once-a-month treatment. That's quite stunning, IMO. Not a cure, but still a fantastic leap.

There are many reasons, one major one being that the virus mutates rapidly and has unique ways of evading the immune system. The fact that practically no one clears the virus is also a hindrance, because scientists don't have an example to work from. The reason is not financial. Gilead came up with a regimen that cures most of hepatitis C, charged a fortune, and made a fortune. There are plenty of researchers with no ties to business, anyway. Come up with an HIV vaccine, and you can book your ticket to accept your Nobel prize.

"Isn't it just possible that all that money rolling in from minority patients."
What I meant was that gay men are still a minority. Also, if you've seen any of the Prep ads, the ads are clearly targeting people of color (minorities).

R4 They only cost $2-3000 a month in the US. In Western Europe it's around $600 and in India it's $7 a month first line, $80 2nd line (resistant).
They are generally distributed for 'free' outside of the US., as is PrEP., It's a Public Health issue.

Shut up, OP. Swallow your PrEP and ask for a hot beef injection.
Know-nothing anti-science squawking spreads lies, you Trumpians-at-heart. The search for a workable HIV vaccine has been underway for over 30 years, and the difficulty is shown in that long time period. Assuming that what was underway in the Reagan WH applied to everyone in the 1980s and that with later administrations stronger government support wasn't in place just shows historical ignorance. The same impulsive bullshit as the MAGA idiots.
And if everything were aimed at saving breeders don't you think there would be a vaccine for breast cancer and melanoma by now? Not to mention cancers of the lung, pancreas, colon, liver, brain, and on and on?
Idiots.

I agreed with some posters here. It can only be cured if it was a straight disease
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 23, 2021 2:51 AM |
Almost everything the they know about making a vaccine for Covid came for all the research into HIV. It was really the dark ages with HIV came about. Fucked up that it's not cured yet. And I do agree, if it was a straight population in the majority of HIV pos rate, you can bet there would be a cure by now.

Ronald Reagan, that's why.

r12 Just stop it. And this medication regimen; having none of that torture and big money drain would be similarly helpful. r10 Gays are close to dying out. No self tests allowed either and not really good and unharmful ones developed.

R9, aren't there several viruses that a person never "clears"? Herpes and the varicella viruses come to mind.

All you conspiracy theorists who believe there is no vaccine because of the income that flows in from treatments are just complete idiots. The reason there is still no vaccine is because HIV is an incredibly complex and vicious virus that constantly mutates. In the current state of medical science, a vaccine is highly improbable. Whoever comes up with one would be Nobelized straight away, and the company that manufactures it would make fortunes beyond belief.
On the other hand, treatments have progressed tremendously and can be obtained very cheaply in most parts of the world (except of course the US where human health if for profit). Also, Prep, which actually blocks the virus from entering the bloodstream, is quite cheap (distributed for free to populations at risk in many countries, including poor ones). And there are currently clinical trials for a once-a-month prep injection, which is an amazing advance, and frankly, is the closest to a vaccine we’ll ever have.
