Royals Across the Globe
It seems the general royal threads are popular and therefore are quickly paywalled, as now is the case with Royal News Ongoing, so here is a new thread.
King Felipe of Spain has been quarantined after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID. Spain was very badly hit, but Felipe makes for the fifth European royal either to have the virus or to be quarantined for it: Albert of Monaco had it, Prince Charles had it, King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway are in quarantine due to a staff member testing positive for it, and now King Felipe of Spain (although nothing has been said about his wife, Queen Letizia).
Prince Joachim of Denmark (the Heir's younger brother) and his second wife, Marie, have now been married for 12+ years. They have two children, Henrik and Athena (who are both "Hignesses" only, not HRHs), and whilst the little boy is handsome, the little girl is really homely. Perhaps she'll grow out of it.
Photo below. The title says, "Everyone's crazy about Athena's look with Joachim and Marie".

The entire concept of royalty is as jaw-droppingly stupid and out-dated as curing disease with leeches.
It's inherently elitist in the worse sense of the term. It belongs in fantasy fiction (hopefully being portrayed negatively).

R1 - P.S.: re it being fiction, as you are undoubtedly American, you miss the fact that far from being fiction, huge swaths of European history, and particularly English history, are tied up with the fates and actions and doings of actual flesh and blood royalty.
Ideas about blue blood and the Divine Right of Kings may indeed dwell in the realm of fantasy.
But the blood spilt and gore of, say, the Wars of the Roses dwelt in the land of reality.
It's not for nothing that the Wars of the Roses are still being turned into films and television programmes.
Henry II molded the England of warring tribal thugs into a unified kingdom that rapidly then became a European power.
That ain't fantasy.

COVID hits the Swedish royal family now: Prince Carl Philip and his wife, Princess Sofia, are in quarantine with their two children after testing positive for the virus, following experiencing "mild flu symptoms".

And, in other royal lockdown news, Queen Margrethe of Denmark has elected to spend Christmas with her younger son, Prince Joachim, and his wife and four children, rather than with Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary and their four children.
In Denmark, only 10 people at a time are being allowed to spend Christmas together, so the Queen had to make a choice. Frederik and Mary will be having their own Christmas together.

Where is Juan Carlos hanging out these days? I forgot about him after reading about his middle-of-the-night escape.

R11 - It was my understanding he'd fled the country to escape, as you say, prosecution over financial, er, irregularities, but I haven't heard anything about him returning.
Queen Sofia is a far-right sort and a deeply observant Catholic (she converted from the Greek Orthodox Church upon marrying him), but it must be said that she quietly put up with womanising for decades, did a quite good job as Queen, raised the family whilst he played and hunted and fooled around with other rich men, humiliating her privately as everyone knew . . . but at least she saw herself as authentically still a First Tier royal. She was, after all, born a blood princess with ties to both the Greek and Danish royal families.
Instead, she's closing out the decades of duty as an object of scorn and pity thanks to a husband who couldn't even keep the boundaries between his private and public life decently sorted.

Have to put this lovely photo up of the Swedish Royal Family, Princess Estelle and Prince Oskar with their parents behind them.
The headline says, Bad News for Estelle and Oskar . . . the bad news being that although they and their parents have tested negative for the virus, they cannot return to school because their Uncle Carl Philip and his wife, Sofia, have tested positive.
But the photo is lovely. They look like a happy family. Victoria waited a long time for the home and hearth happiness.

Rumors are that he lives in Germany for access to some super-secret medical treatment available there. He’s nuts. His father was literally worshipped for decades, is it no wonder that he expects the same? But in the internet age, he’s not getting that automatic respect and fealty. Some of the Bangkok demonstrations are to remove him as well as the current government. If he were smart—which he is not—he would abdicate so his extremely popular sister could rule as regent until his son and heir-du-jour comes of age.

R22 - Prince Philip's grandfather, Prince William of Denmark was "elected" as Greece's King George I. It didn't work out so well.
The point of hereditary monarchy is stability. Yes, just what a quarrelsome nation needs! Two frequent national elections - one for the government and one for the monarchy!
Elected monarchies lose the cachet that makes them worth having in the first place. And what's to stop politically "elected" monarchs from eventually meddling in politics and government?
The line is necessary. Either get rid of the monarchy, for which there are very good arguments, or keep it as a legitimate monarchy (for which there are some arguments) and have done with it.

Corgis are known to be a bit snappish. A story in one of the innumerable bios of the Queen, which always include her love of dogs and horses, was about a particularly ill-tempered one of her dogs called "Dookie". A footman or other designated errand-person had to take Dookie to the vet for some reason. The footman warned the vet that Dookie had rather a temper.
The vet looked up at the footman and said, "I need not remind you that I have some small experience of dogs," and a moment later, Dookie had the vets hand between his teeth.
Presumably, Dookie was more respectful to HM.

Re the grumbling from Scotland, you have to remember that Sturgeon's only aim in life is to get Scotland out of the UK and insist that nothing out of Britain has anything to do with Scotland, particularly its royals. Unfortunately for Wee Nic, as we often call her, Scotland is still part of the UK and if Kate and William hadn't shown up, Sturgeon would have said, "See? They don't even think we're worth a visit." But the two were warmly welcomed in Edinburgh and Berwick - there are too many Scots with kinship ties south of Berwick and who feel British as well as Scottish. Sturgeon was just doing her Performing Monkey act.
Kate's red McQueen coat is the bomb, and only a woman who is 5'9", very slim, and wearing 4" heeled boots could get away with it.
Red and green are the colours of Wales, by the way, and you'll notice that in Scotland at first she wore blue (the colour of the Saltire, Scotland's flag). These choices are no accident.
Kate looked glorious on this tour - the luxuriant hair, the high heels, the long coats . . . very regal yet very feminine and approachable.
Diana wore red and green on her first trip to Wales in the autumn after the wedding, although, if I remember, she wore the hat the wrong, tilted too far back. No one cared - she was rapturously received. Ah, those early Diana days - who knew how badly things were going behind the scenes?!

Any bets on whether they're going to give a son the chi-chi trendy names they have the two girls? Generally, when it comes to sons, parents tend to move back to traditional names, lest the boys seem, er, well, you know: comme ca.
Hence, Anne's daughter named "Zara" (which I believe means "light" in Sanskrit), but the son's name is a nice solid English bloke name: Peter.

Prince Albert and Charlene? It was and is an odd relationship.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 11, 2020 12:38 AM

R68 It wasn’t an odd relationship when they started out. She was more than happy living with him for six years and he was her ticket to the top of the social and economic food chain. Back in 2005, she was a snaggle-toothed, aging swimmer with the “deportment of a trucker” (a description I’ll never forget on a royalty message board back in the day). Not so unexpectedly, it seems like all of the pictures of her looking uncouth back then have been scrubbed from the net.
It was all fun and games until he asked to marry her. Once the wedding got close, I think she got cold feet but the pressure was on to see it through. Becoming royal meant there would be duties and responsibilities and expectations and she wasn’t certain she wanted that life permanently. Oh, she was certain of the wealth though. Albert financed a complete makeover for her...head to toe plastic surgery, new teeth, million dollar wardrobe, her own villa on the French Riviera. She looks sad and pissy because of the copious amounts of Botox in her face and the realization that she married a mushy bodied old fart with scads of illegitimate children. But whatever, she’s filthy rich and her son will be sovereign of Monaco one day. Sure as hell beats being a swim coach at a YMCA in Johannesburg.

R97 - Interesting story. I wonder if The SUN has gotten it right?
IF the story is true, I can only think of a few possible explanations.
One is that Yuge and Jack have simply returned to Ivy Cottage for the holidays, although they are closer to the Queen and her parents at Windsor.
Another is that the Sussexes suddenly decided to return and need the house back sooner than expected. However, Meghan just got a trial delayed so as not to have to travel to the UK for the trial's opening on 11 January, so suddenly appearing again would be a bad look that undermines her integrity with the court. Or, perhaps Meghan is farther along in the third pregnancy than was let out, and they want the baby born in Britain in order to make it clear they and their children keep their hooks in their status as part of the BRF. But, surely they would have known that before the earlier story broke.
Eugenie needs special care and needs to be closer to doctors in London OR the baby is arriving earlier than expected and she's already in hospital.
Eugenie and Jack were never there at all and the whole story was cooked up to delay the public knowing that the Sussexes were OUT for good and never returning.
The Sussexes simply reneged on their agreement because Harry needs a permanent address in the UK and to be seen to be living there in order to avoid US taxes on his earnings in America.
OR - FC is haunted.

With Harry's latest filing of a defamation suit against ANL for the story about him neglecting his ties to the British armed forces, the Sussexes are now pursuing (count them) SIX simultaneous lawsuits, all against the press.
One needs to ask oneself if this is really the best use of one's time, one's money or one's father's money, and whether this shows that one has too much time on one's hands . . .

R98 - Have the Sussexes announced that Meghan is pregnant again after the the recent miscarriage?
by Anonymous | reply 105 | December 14, 2020 1:50 PM

And, sure enough, as soon as she's gotten her "humanitarian" creds out there, immediately Oprah comes out with a Women-Owned Wellness Coffee drink (oat latte coffee, if you please, and far from cheap) that Meghan apparently "invested" in, then sent a basket of it to her pal, Oprah, who suddenly comes out pimping for the brand, and mentioning that she heard of it through a "neighbour" (wink wink nod nod).
In other words, the "Thank you" to the care workers was just to take the crassness off her latest efforts at monetising of her royal status.
And didn't dear Meghan look as if butter wouldn't have melted in her mouth as she FIRST did her fragile, feminine, lilac-flavoured, pussy-bowed, dangling tendrils number to lead into her commercial venture . . .
Why the fuck didn't she wait a week or two, for God's sake?! Doesn't she see how obvious the two events on each other's heels makes her look?!

Pippa is much prettier than Wallis, but Pippa was also for a long time an extreme sport enthusiast, and her body looked it.
Pippa's also got by far the more enviable lot than her sister - wealth and privilege, royal adjacent enough for status but free of the encumbrances of said status.
Carole Middleton would surely be the envy of Mrs Bennett for the "placement" she achieved for her daughters.
The Christmas "surprise" video of the Cambridges is actually surprisingly affecting and joyous. William has inherited the Windsor men's deep beautiful voice, one of the few things of real male beauty they seem to share.
And that video will have put paid to the grumblers, attackers, and put Meghan's pussy-bow video in the shade.
Speaking of which, the DM, in predictable fashion, followed up its coverage of Meghan's simpering appearance with headlines screaming, "Meghan Cashes in on Her Connections!" re Oprah's far too quick follow-up with the pimping of Clevr Brands, of which that ridiculously expensive oat milk latte is part of.
And now, it's come out that Blackstone is a backer of the brand. Blackstone.
Blackstone recently acquired a major stake in Ancestry.com - it wants access to their DNA and health records. I wonder why?

R114 - One of my favourite American authors is Edith Wharton, and in what I found to be a wonderful book, "The House of Mirth", the fatally flawed Lily Bart, beautiful and with very expensive tastes after a wealthy childhood until her father is "ruined", is left motherless fairly young and misses several opportunities for the dull but wealthy marriage that would give her the safety and luxury she craves. At one point in the book, when she learns that a plain, pudgy girl in her set has landed one of the richest (and dullest) men in that set, Lily thinks to herself how enviable not to have a mother to expertly steer her daughter into the safe harbours that Lily can never seem to enter.
So it's not just an English Thing.

Kate gets credit for knowing full well that she not only could never be Diana, it's more advantageous if she isn't. Stardom isn't the goal: long-term survival and stability are. So Kate dresses well enough. It's Meghan who craved stardom and had fantasies (and that's all they were) of being another Diana.
Kate knows the difference between being royal and being a celebrity.

R123 - Charlene's new shaved hair is horrid. She looks like she needed the side of her head shaved due to recent brain surgery. Not appropriate for the wife of a Prince. I sometimes wonder if she has psychological problems. She's had multiple facial surgeries and procedures since she's been Princess. She doesn't seem like she's ever satisfied with her looks. Has her husband Albert been screwing around on her and her new cut is a cry for help and/or an act of rebellion? I hope she doesn't end up looking like the Lion Woman of NY, Jocelyn Wildenstein.

R157 - Yes, he suddenly looks much taller and, if the acne is clearing up, looks like he will be a very handsome as well as royal catch in ten years. Given that so many of Europe's next Sovereigns will be female, the competition to land Christian will be fierce. Norway, Belgium, Spain, and Sweden all have future Queens. Only Luxembourg, Denmark, and Lichtenstein have male heirs, and Denmark is by far the more famous and publicly recognised monarchy. Monaco, er, doesn't count as far as prestige goes.
With Prince George a generation behind Christian, Christian will have the field pretty much to himself. His cousins, the two by his Uncle Joachim's first wife, are attractive and certainly well-connected, but there won't be any HRHs for their kids or the kind of ceremony and prestige that Frederik's children, especially Christian, will come in for.
As you know, I'm hoping Christian will wait for Princess Charlotte to grow up. When he's 35 (his father married at 36), she'll be 25. Perfect.
