Apparently Mike wasn't supposed to be gay. Just rough trade that had sex for money and drugs with anyone (just like his real life reference Michael Parker). There are even cut scenes where he is making out with a girl. It was River Phoenix's idea to make Mike gay and profess his love for Scott.

River was just so compelling. Google image search his name...it’s amazing the range and variety of pics out there of him for such a short career. I loved this movie. I was 19 and a wanna be writer when it came out. Saw it with my best friend at the time who was real-life a hooker. We were obsessed with it and immediately went to Domsie’s in Williamsburg the next day to craft Mike-like outfits.

Here in San Francisco, (circa 1992), a friend of mine said he's saw this film at the, now closed, Lumiere Theatre. As he walked on Polk Street, he couldn't help but notice what was on said street, as opposed to what he'd just seen on the screen.

Van Sant allowed them to improv their scenes. Based on their off screen relationship, I think they were behaving not acting . Especially River.
