In my 20s I did a lot of local theater (I know - yawn) - but there was an “Ed Asher” ish gruff guy with a sweet dingy wife - they were both opera singers. “Ed” was always a funny guy - but was older and gruff and grumpy and standoffish most of the time. It is one of the few times in my life that my gaydar was broken. Ed came out of the closet, left his wife and moved into a great house in the heart of San Francisco - he wanted to “whoop it up” have a wild gay time and marry a man and live happily ever after. I visited him there - everything was perfect in his life on the outside, but Ed didn’t have a lot of friends and couldn’t find love - he was sooo disappointed. He didn’t enjoy either one of his lives. He died a few years later. It makes me think of Bruce/Caitlyn - there is something else going on that makes it impossible for them to be happy. IMO!!
