In his podcast conversation with Matt Yglesias, Andrew Sullivan notes that he received an HRC email arguing that gays & lesbians have been under an unprecedented assault by the Trump Administration. To which he responds that this is the best time in the world to be gay & lesbian. He's right, isn't he?
Four+ years ago was a better time in the U.S., but yes. The two truths don't cancel each other out.

We must always be alert for a backslide.

Any person with a working brain cell knows the response to this question should be: "Mixed". There are important upsides while several major downsides remain, the most important of which include discrimination in housing and finances.

The question, R4, isn’t whether there are gains to be made.

The best time if you're a wealthy white male.
Everyone else is fucked.

He is such a vile piece of shit

I don't know. Everything about the gay dolce vita scene in 1960's Rome sounds wonderful. .

It's always the best time as long as there's improvement.

Sullivan is wrong.

Why do people even listen to Sullivan? He's bright, but not the bright. He's an oaky writer, but not a really good one. He's really nothing more than a constant, self-propagating publicity machine.

We cannot say as we were not alive in other times. We must make it the best of times.

Impossible to say as there is some evidence other past cultures were not only fine with gays but celebratory toward them, but our knowledge of that is of course incomplete.
I'd agree with r1 that within the modern US timeline, a few years ago during Obama's admin and before Trump's was a marginally better time.

Why do pundits and elites never link economic realities to questions like this? A lot of gay and lesbian folks work in creative fields like theater, or in the restaurant industry, or the beauty industry. Many more are gig workers like so many have become since the last economic downturn, when millions of jobs were eliminated or shipped overseas.
Does Andrew Sullivan really think those folks would answer the same way? Very few people of any persuasion or identity can say that their life is “the best ever” in 2020. These people are unbelievably out of touch.

[quote]Why do people even listen to Sullivan?
Because he's a contrarian and some people need to feel like they are counter-culture to feel smart.

In most first world countries outside the USA this is definitely true, with the exception of parts of Europe afflicted with immigrants with a medieval mindset. Parts of Eastern Europe eg Poland and Russia also seem to be going backwards at an alarming rate for different reasons

Sullivan is one of those people who thinks being contrary makes him look smart. It doesn't.

I like Sullivan. He appreciates that the world is not (always) entirely black and white.

Gay people are more than gay marriage and AIDS meds, just like Latinos are more than immigration. We have college debt and retirement scares and health insurance challenges and the Rs hate all of that shit.

R17 for the win. That's all his is - a contrarian to cast him in this 'gay conservative rebel' mode.
I hate him - as any thinking person should. He bashed Obama constantly even though Obama released the restrictions that prevented HIV people from residency and citizenship in the US.
Due to Obama, he is now a US citizen - something he could never get before under Republicans. Yet there he is - kissing Republicans asses whenever he can.
