What's to hate about it? That it wasn't screeching and histrionic but instead quiet and thoughtful?
I had never heard it (or heard about it) until now. I genuinely can't imagine what there is to hate about it. Maybe it's not your style, and you don't like it, but hate it? Or "still hate it"?
The NYT article below provides some context, but for me it sounds like gurumbling would be Trumpeters irritated that a Puerto Rican man didn't sing the song like the more usual stepped-on-a-cat version.
And it's the only time I've actually listened to all of the song and not cringed all the way through but rather liked it.

The national anthem is about the United States not the performer. I hate any version that deviates from the melody or even words. It is not the piece to show the world your improvisation skills.
