Jane Austen's Emma (2020)
Just watched this. I have seen better adaptations, but it was still enjoyable. Fantastic costumes, and the MEN! Leading man Johnny Flynn has a wonderfully gratuitous naked (rear only) scene. DL's big-cocked fave Josh O'Connor is excellent as the fussy priest. Connor Swindells, the closeted jock from SEX EDUCATION is also in it.
Nothing earth shattering, but not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

I love Josh O'Connell. He's been naked in almost everything he's ever been in. I wish more actors were like him.

Who is Josh O'Connell? This adaptation has only Josh O'Connor, and he's not naked in this.

Josh O'Connor is a rather unattractive English actor who, for no particular reason, Datalounge has decided is handsome and the next Bond.

R3 Not "for no particular reason". The particular reason is his cock and arse.

No man is worth having to watch that alien girl actress. Her eyes are too far apart, it's almost triggering. I can't watch that chess series DL likes either.

Thank you, R5. She's not untalented, but she is way too horrifying to have to look at for two hours. She makes Benedict Cumberbatch (AKA Roger the Alien) look normal.

Hemingway hated Jane Austen's prose.
It does not roll off the tongue. There are, in truth, too many pauses and, indeed, too many tripping commas.

This is probably my least favorite Jane Austen adaptation. I gave up on it after the halfway mark.
I don't even know why it was made. The 1990s version was perfectly fine.

R4 is that just supposed to be a picture of an arm?

I refuse to watch the goop production.

Emma is my least favorite Austen novel, the main character didn't engage me and the supporting characters just droned in and on.

The version with Paltrow is best for Jeremy Northam at his most gorgeous. Paltrow is actually very good, as Emma is not a very sympathetic character and she manages to make her rather likeable even in her misplaced snobbery and meddling. The one piece of bad casting is Toni Collette as Harriet - she's much too gauche in the role.
I liked Anya Taylor-Joy in The Witch and especially in The Queen's Gambit, but her Emma left me cold, as did Kate Beckinsale and Romola Garai in two TV versions.

I loved Queen’s Gambit but I didn’t like her in Emma. Her acting was a bit too astringent. Bill Nighy, normally he’s great. The actor who played Mr Knightley was miscast. The whole production was annoying.

I switched the 2020 version off after two minutes. I found it unbearable.
I agree with R13 that Paltrow was more successful than most in making Emma sympathetic and Jeremy Northam was an ideal Mr Knightley. The writing and direction let it down, though, in the sense that the comedy was unnecessarily broad and Juliet Stevenson and Toni Collette were miscast. Alan Cumming was wasted also.

I liked both the Paltrow/Northam (with Toni Collette) version and the Beckinsale/Strong (with Samantha Morton) version.

My favourite adaptation of Emma was the Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller version. I think the two had great on screen chemistry which was a little lacking in one or two of the others.
