Using Alexa without the spying
Anybody think this works. I put my echo in private mode (where all the lights turn red). I can then type my commands through the app to play music, etc...
I know it defeats the purpose of having a convenience device like the echo, but for my situation, it works quite well.
My question is, do you think they are still listening?

Of course Amazon is still listening and recording. They're more interested in masses of data and not individual data about you specifically, but yes.
We have no excuses to be naive. I don't use Echo or Alexa or any voice control at all--but I also recognize that Amazon owns half a million servers and all our traffic, whether typed or spoken, is transmitted through them and logged in aggregate by Amazon. Amazon operates like China operates insofar as collecting data.

I gave away my Alexa speaker years ago. I have an Apple HomePod now but leave it unplugged until I want to use it.

I have several Alexa devices.
If Bezos is that interested in how many times a day I ask Alexa what the weather is, or to listen to "playlist Modern Jazz" from Spotify, more power to him.
Mostly they use it to improve recommendation and interface--if more people are asking about weather than they expected, they might allow Alexa to give you a three day forecast or hourly forecast or alert you when it might rain.
Unless you are an international spy or a member of a terrorist organization you have nothing to worry about.

Yeah, but my husbear frequently beats me up during our sex play and I don't want the cops showing up at the door.

I have wondered if the Secret Service might show up at my door...
