Ellen blackballed her after being responsible for her original hype. Female audiences hate her. Men find her unattractive. She's just not that talented either.

She is interesting in a very narrow range. Then she aged out. Though she could have gone for some Cloris Leachman type mature woman roles.

She was incredibly talented on Another World, but she sold out on the celebrity relationships (first Steve Martin, then Ellen). Ellen almost certainly blackballed her, and the mental illness woes not just kicked in but were made public.
With all that, she is still working, and while she's in no danger of winning awards these days, she seems to be pulling some good D and staying happy. So, good on Celestia.
