Walmart and McDonald’s have the most workers on food stamps and Medicaid, new study shows

A sizable number of the recipients of federal aid programs such as Medicaid and food stamps are employed by some of the biggest and more profitable companies in the United States, chief among them Walmart and McDonald’s, according to a new report from Congress’s nonpartisan watchdog.

The Government Accountability Office undertook the study at the behest of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to answer questions about the relationship between employers and the federal assistance programs. The report draws on February data from agencies in 11 states that administer Medicaid and the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP, or food stamps.

Walmart was one of the top four employers of SNAP and Medicaid beneficiaries in every state. McDonald’s was in the top five of employers with employees receiving federal benefits in at least nine states.

n the nine states that responded about SNAP benefits — Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Washington — Walmart was found to have employed about 14,500 workers receiving the benefit, followed by McDonald’s with 8,780, according to Sanders’s team. In six states that reported Medicaid enrollees, Walmart again topped the list, with 10,350 employees, followed by McDonald’s with 4,600.

In Georgia, for example, Walmart employed an estimated 3,959 workers on Medicaid — an estimated 2.1 percent of the total of non-elderly, non-disabled people in the state receiving the benefit. McDonald’s was next on the list, employing 1,480 who received Medicaid, or 0.8 percent of the total of non-elderly, non-disabled people on the program.

Taxpayers are subsidizing their billions in profits

by Anonymousreply 1November 20, 2020 2:38 PM

Walmart is Satan pure and simple.

Fucking corporate welfare queen.

by Anonymousreply 2November 20, 2020 2:44 PM

Exactly, R1. Who's getting the handout? Someone who works for a living or the Waltons and McDonald's, who can pay their employees less than it costs to live because the government subsidizes the corporations.

Socialism for the rich

In Vermont there was a front line hazard pay program that included grocery/retail workers in its second round. Walmart had to be publicly shamed by our governor to apply for their Vermont workers and only did it after the state extended the deadline in order to get the big boxes to submit.

I submitted for our employees in round one and was ready to upload about 5 minutes after the portal opened. it couldn't have been made any easier by thr state. eligible front line workers received either 1200, or 2000, based on hours.

and Walmart refused until pressure got to them.

Capitalism is a welfare system where costs are public but profits are privatized.

Since the vast majority of McDonald's are franchises, how many "employees" can they (the corporation) have?

by Anonymousreply 9November 20, 2020 3:06 PM

I’m not an economist, but I imagine it’s because they deliberately withhold hours from their employees’ schedules.

by Anonymousreply 10November 20, 2020 3:10 PM

Oh, of course, R10. They do things like give employees 29 hours a week, so they don't qualify as a full-time employee and don't receive benefits like vacation and healthcare.

And because their schedule is never the same from week to week, it's difficult to find a second job, though many of them do have second and third jobs.

Walmart is a 21st century sweat shop.

They pay minimum wage, which is nowhere near a living wage. While minimum wage was meant to enslave young workers, the average age is around 31 with one child.
