I don't know anyone over the age of 12 who drinks milk with dinner. And no, that doesn't mean the adults I know are chugging a bottle of wine with every meal,* though moderate amounts of wine and beer may enhance your bone health. If you're an adult worried about osteoporosis, fatty fish, leafy greens, and various other fruits and vegetables are a better source of calcium and vitamin D than milk.

I know plenty of people, just not adult milk drinkers (unless pregnant or secretive about their milk consumption). I will agree that it's pretty absurd to ask how anyone could POSSIBLY drink milk with dinner, however. Sounds utterly (or udderly, har har) gross to me but I'm not everyone and who really cares what others drink with dinner?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 18, 2020 6:11 PM |
I associate milk-drinking into adulthood as a baby-taster habit. If you're living on a farm and have good, fresh milk available to you, that's a different story.
No, I'm not saying you must drink only wine with dinner. I drink water with food.

I personally never liked drinking milk under any circumstances, but some of my brothers, and many of my friends, would drink it with breakfast or lunch. I have never met anyone who drinks it with dinner. It seems like a heavy thing to drink with a meal that is already a pretty full affair.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 18, 2020 7:15 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 18, 2020 11:21 PM |
R56, I drink water with every dinner, and sometimes a glass of wine. Occasionally I have a beer if I'm eating something spicy such as Thai or Mexican. I drink milk only in coffee and on cold cereal (which I don't eat that often). Even as a kid, I did not enjoy drinking a glass of milk unless it was ice cold and accompanied by cake or cookies. I drank milk with dinner only under duress, when my mother insisted.
[quote] I wish I could. I love milk. But I am lactose intolerant.
Many adults are because, guess what, adult bodies aren't really meant to consume milk. If you're into it, and it doesn't cause you any problems, hey, whatever. But the notion that milk is a particularly healthy choice for adults is fallacious.

It's not a matter of "refusing" to drink milk with dinner. It just doesn't occur to me to drink milk with a meal. I drink water with food. If I'm eating fast food (McD's), I'll drink Diet Coke.

R22 Many older people do. Some Italians I grew up with, their Dad would drink milk with his dinner at times. I'm not keen on it, but to each his own. Romney and Trump drank milk at a dinner that was well publicised. It's probably more natural for those who do not drink wine, and for those who do not like water. I've seen OP's pic before, anf if memory serves correct, I believe they are an Italian couple living in Canada.

growing up in the 70's and 80's milk was the only option at school to drink with your meal from the cafeteria. You could bring your thermos and fill it with kool aid. this was before juice boxes and capri sun. And kids didn't really bring canned soda to school until i was in jr. high
we never drank milk for dinner at home. We usually drank iced tea or water
i don't see anything wrong with drinking milk at dinner though. it's kind of quaint.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | November 19, 2020 1:09 AM |

I like how R56 demands to know what people who “refuse” to drink milk drink instead, as if the concept is entirely foreign, but then chimes back in at R70 to rattle off the alternatives he orders in restaurants, where he apparently wouldn’t be caught dead ordering a frosty glass of bovine mammary secretions with his steak dinner.

by Anonymous | reply 78 | November 19, 2020 12:29 PM |
Until Covid came along, I typically ate dinner at the bars of pub style restaurants a couple of times a week, but, for obvious reasons, never ordered milk with my meal, and had soda instead.
However, at home, it's always low-fat milk and sometimes water because 1) I don't drink alcohol, and 2) I don't like tea or coffee with any meal but breakfast, and 3) If I bought regular soda (I absolutely loathe artificial sweeteners) or fruit juice, I'd end up drinking them in between all my meals, which I don't need, as I already struggle with a very high-carb diet.
