Outside of the Soft Cell cover version of "Tainted Love", what do you think of his legacy? Should he be remembered more than the poor man's Neil Tennant?
You must be from outside the UK. Soft Cell are much loved in the UK, there were thousands of people at their farewell show a year or so back, they are anything but a one-hit wonder here.
I've never, ever, heard Marc described as a "poor man's Neil Tennant". Apart from both being gay singers in synth duos (for about 1/10th of Marc's career, yet all of Neil's) the don't have much in common.
Marc's music has veered all over the place from pop to cabaret to chanson. Neil's has stayed pretty rigidly in pop, although I know the PSBs have written musicals, film scores, ballets etc.

He has some great songs and some amazing duets like Feel Love with Jimmy Somerville or Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart with Gene Pitney. He also did duets with Siouxsie Sioux and German Band Rosenstolz which are quite good.
My personal favorite song of his is Tears Run Rings.

Marc Almond is great but too self-destructive to have fulfilled his potential or secure his legacy. He is in no way a poor man's Neil Tennant.
