What Color are the Walls of Your Home?

Thinking of buttercream mixed with white trim. Perhaps one wall of a slightly/somewhat stronger shade of yellow. Floors are all cherry wood. No rugs. Fireplace and ceiling are white of my condo.

by Anonymousreply 86December 28, 2020 7:22 PM

Some of us live in many roomed homes, with each room a different color. Imagine that, OP!

by Anonymousreply 1November 15, 2020 5:18 PM

Live in a studio. Walls are all off-white (warm, yellow-ish white). Ceiling is a more true white. I like it a lot. I love color, but for walls, prefer whites and off-whites.

by Anonymousreply 2November 15, 2020 5:23 PM

Main rooms...a beige that is almost gray.

by Anonymousreply 3November 15, 2020 5:23 PM

R1, I have seen homes with each room a different color., just as Navaho White next to a room that is deep purple. Isn't it jarring to the eye and senses when you walk from room to room?

by Anonymousreply 4November 15, 2020 5:24 PM

R3, Beige-grey seems to be currently popular. Do you ever find it depressing?

by Anonymousreply 5November 15, 2020 5:26 PM

Living room : icy lemon yellow

kitchen : currently fresh grass shoot green with high gloss black cupboards. repainting Benjamin Moore apple pear

office : currently a light blue periwinkle, repainting Benjamin Moore orange froth

bedroom : what it came with, some off white. painting it a glossy extreme white with a blue undertone eventually

by Anonymousreply 6November 15, 2020 5:30 PM

Warm gray is actually nice and not depressing.

Sherwin Williams Paper White

by Anonymousreply 8November 15, 2020 5:34 PM

I have a rental home and the interior paint is all painted Sherwin Williams Gossamer Veil. It's a light warm gray, very neutral.

by Anonymousreply 9November 15, 2020 5:35 PM

I have accent wall colors in the den, dining room, living room and bedrooms.

by Anonymousreply 10November 15, 2020 5:37 PM

It's funny that my apartment is painted with so much color because I mostly wear black and on zoom I have black room dividers blocking the view of my clothing racks behind me so everyone I have ever worked with thinks that I don't like color. Meanwhile, I live in Pee-wee's playhouse

by Anonymousreply 11November 15, 2020 5:38 PM

Walls must be white. Only fancy, elegant and classy wallpapers strategically placed with no abuse are allowed in a house with taste. Reading things like lemon yellow in the living room is giving me the headache.

You Americans can be so tasteless when it comes to decoration.

by Anonymousreply 12November 15, 2020 5:39 PM

I have physical problems and am not up to painting walls. Well, it is really the prep work.

How much is reasonable to hire for the painting of rooms?

(One room, as an example, is OK.)

by Anonymousreply 13November 15, 2020 5:41 PM

Insane asylum white

by Anonymousreply 14November 15, 2020 5:41 PM

R12, White can look very stark, uninviting, even cold. Adding a hint of color such as a warm, happy yellow undertone can make the room look larger and lessen the need for artificial light. At least I think so.

by Anonymousreply 15November 15, 2020 5:42 PM

Sage walls, cream trim

Hope you don't have overhead, fluorescent lighting as well.

by Anonymousreply 17November 15, 2020 5:44 PM

R10, How did you choose which should be the accent walls? Would the color be that much different from the other walls or a blended color?

by Anonymousreply 18November 15, 2020 5:45 PM

Only in the bathroom @R17

by Anonymousreply 19November 15, 2020 5:46 PM

Well now I am not going to invite r12 over for tea and crumpets.

by Anonymousreply 20November 15, 2020 5:49 PM

Main room, kitchen, dining and 2 bedrooms are off-white. Master bedroom is greige. Office/study is a very light blue with one wall that is blue-gray. Master bath is silver, which looks ice blue in daylight.

by Anonymousreply 21November 15, 2020 5:51 PM

Our accent walls are the only complete walls, if you get my meaning, R18.

Walls that don’t have windows or doors.

The back wall of our dining room is a beautiful sage color while the rest is a taupe-y color. The living room wall is also that same sage and taupe-y color.

I’ll admit we cheated and used the Sherman Williams HGTV color palettes from Lowe’s and those colors coordinated well.

by Anonymousreply 22November 15, 2020 5:56 PM

My living room is bright white and I would never do that again. I don’t recommend it to anyone.

A colorist, Maria Killiam, recommends that no one use bright white because it never looks like it does in magazines. Pictures in magazines are professionally lit with much more intensity that anyone has in their house. I have large windows all over, but the light changes during different months over the year. It’s only really bright a few months. And I have a lot of sconces and chandeliers, and southern exposure. In fact I painted it and put in a lot more lighting because it was frequently gloomy, especially in the ceiling corners, even though there’s two picture windows on the south and southwest.

Stark white makes earth tones and subdued tones look old and worn. It’s only good if you’re going to use bright primary colors or gray. It looks bad with gold, tans, and golden beiges, and you’re really restricted to the cooler side of the pallette, because most people don’t want taxi driver yellow or bright neon orange as a big feature. You can’t use the toned-down version of warm colors, rust, umber, burgundy, etc. You need to use ivories to do that, bit bright white.

If you’re ever unsure what to use, use a neutral ivory or cream without too much yellow.

by Anonymousreply 23November 15, 2020 5:57 PM

Yes,R4. Many of my guests have walked through my house of rooms painted different colors and stated that they felt raped by them. I have placed chairs outside each room so they can catch a rest before the next assault.

by Anonymousreply 24November 15, 2020 5:58 PM

I saw a gay couple on Marie Kondo’s show that had one room a beautiful blue, the next a very coordinating soft green. The two colors really harmonized and flowed from room to room. I wish I knew the color names.

by Anonymousreply 25November 15, 2020 6:00 PM

My den is also that taupe color plus a beautiful shade of rust.

by Anonymousreply 28November 15, 2020 6:04 PM

just follow the color card and they will all match.

by Anonymousreply 29November 15, 2020 6:04 PM

Baja and Elephant Skin = Sandy Beige and Gray

Lot of white trim and a white fireplace in practically every room keeps it bright enough for me. I did change light fixtures in my dining room and now find the room a little dark for my liking. Live and learn.

R6 I'm frothing at those truly faggy colors. I would need a Xanax in there. You're not related to Dump are you?

by Anonymousreply 33November 15, 2020 6:45 PM

First floor: suntan.

Second floor: off-white in living/dining and library, Kelly green and white in kitchen and half-bath.

Third floor: gray flannel and off-white.

I'm loving this thread just for the goofy color names alone.

You all almost have J. Crew beat!

by Anonymousreply 35November 15, 2020 6:52 PM

The living room and dining room are Lichen (a muted sage green), the entry foyer and main bathroom are in Calamine (soft pink with a grey undertone); master bedroom and kitchen are Sulking Room Pink (pink with a rose brown quality), guest bedroom is Hague Blue (dramatic dark blue with some green in it); den is Blazer Red with partial gloss (cheerful orange red).

by Anonymousreply 36November 15, 2020 7:07 PM

Renoir Bisque, the ultimate colour, goes with everything.

by Anonymousreply 37November 15, 2020 7:18 PM

I've made each place i have looked very different, in terms of color, and I base it around the natural architecture of the space. I'm currently living in a pre-war in NYC with high ceilings, original hard wood floors, and story book frames on the walls. I went with a gilded age / rooms of Versailles look because I love and have a lot of Louis XVI furniture that I mix with modern pieces. It seems to work.

The main room is a light blue, a tad lighter than Tiffany, with gold leaf on the storybook frames, centered by a deep red chandelier. The foyer soft, antique yellow, and the bedroom is a soft, seafoam (?) green, also with the gold leaf trim.

This is a very different look than my other apartments, but it suits the space.

Generally, as a renter, I don't do white walls and standard lighting fixtures. Everything gets ripped out and replaced and walls are painted over. Life is too short for plain, white walls.

by Anonymousreply 38November 15, 2020 7:28 PM

I went with Shanghai Gesture jewel-tones, faded with a poppy milk glaze.

Downstairs living room, dining room (all one room) Benjamin Moore, "Suntan Yellow." Horrible name, beautiful shade of yellow--like a British aristocrat's salon.

It's a grat mood enhancer.

by Anonymousreply 41November 15, 2020 8:17 PM

R41, Very interesting choice of color. Would it be a better mood enhancer than light lemon yellow or buttercream? If you're on a Zoom call would it matter if the walls are too close to your skin tone? Agree "Suntan Yellow" is not a very appealing name.

by Anonymousreply 42November 15, 2020 8:50 PM

R35, Thank you, and I appreciate all of the previous contributors. Interesting that DL taste makers seem to be all over the color map.

by Anonymousreply 43November 15, 2020 8:53 PM

r41, I agree about the name but I love the color, I almost went with it before I settled on orange froth

by Anonymousreply 44November 15, 2020 8:59 PM

Landlord White.

by Anonymousreply 45November 15, 2020 9:13 PM

I've got something called eggnog (Behr) with white trim. I don't know what buttercream is but it sounds similar. Everybody is using gray now, chile, but if I do gray it won't match anything.

by Anonymousreply 46November 15, 2020 9:19 PM

Behr Paints

Living Room: Key Largo (robin's egg blue)

Dining Room: Applause Please (dark grey-purple)

Front Bedroom: C'Est La Vie (lilac)

Back Bedroom: Early Spring (celery green)

Kitchen: Country Weekend (sea green)

Bathroom: Emerald Forest (dark green)

The woodwork is nearly all eggshell semi-gloss, except for a few bits (like the mantel) that are dove grey.

I like cool colors, and I like the way the colors complement each other when I look through the house. It reminds me of Easter eggs on a sunny day, and of being inside an aquarium on an overcast day. I have hardware floors, which were all refinished during the remodeling.

I have a lot of artwork and some of it is modern and colorful. I like my white backgrounds. I color my world in other ways.

Having said that I do love seeing dark colored walls in the right setting. Above are mentions of a kitchen in apple green and a living room a soft butter yellow and I love those looks.

Navajo White

by Anonymousreply 51November 16, 2020 6:33 PM

R45, “Landlord White” is Behr Swiss Coffee. The reason they pick that is because it is ivory without too much yellow, so it goes with either gray, golds or tans.

In bright light it’s pretty white, in darker rooms it can read ivory. It’s white enough to go with white appliances, but ivory enough to go with antiques. It’s a really noncommittal color.

by Anonymousreply 52November 16, 2020 8:33 PM

Here’s Benjamin Moore Suntan Yellow. If you see it in a room, you can see it’s got tan in it. It’s a golden yellow, not a primary or acidic yellow. The tan tones it down.

A lot of the paint colors you see today are grayed down to go with people’s modern gray furniture. This is an old color mix, and it’s tanned down to go with gold picture frames, gold in Persian rugs, brass, natural colors of wood stain, and other more traditional decor styles.

The exterior of my house is Navajo white, it’s a nice somewhat neutral color. At one point one of the bedrooms was painted that color and I loved it so much.

My room is currently painted in Barbados Sand by Benjamin Moore, which is nice creamy color.

One important note is that while a color chip may look perfect, it may not look great on your walls due to lighting exposure and other furnishings and flooring.

by Anonymousreply 54November 16, 2020 8:39 PM

AI found out white or very pale paint colors reflect the green trees or grass from outside. It sounds great, until your living room is a sickly faded lime/pea green several hours a day because it’s reflecting the green trees outside. If you’ve got a big window with a lot of green inside, paint the walls a color bright enough that you can’t see it. I didn’t notice it until the living room went from a deep gold to ultra white. I had to repaint it.

by Anonymousreply 55November 16, 2020 8:43 PM

White, but with lots of red and brown spatters.

by Anonymousreply 56November 16, 2020 8:47 PM

Buttercream with white trim and ceilings. Seriously.

by Anonymousreply 57November 16, 2020 8:48 PM

Light beige walls throughout except for a creamy white kitchen ( Sherwin Williams Greek Villa) and a tobacco-colored accent wall behind the bed.

by Anonymousreply 58November 16, 2020 8:55 PM

Cherry floors are tough to work with. Any recommendations besides gold tones? Any good gray or blue options?

by Anonymousreply 59November 16, 2020 8:56 PM

R59 I am not an expert but my floors are a red toned bamboo and my walls are edgecomb gray. It looks nice but once again lighting and exposure can affect the look.

by Anonymousreply 60November 16, 2020 9:01 PM

Whore red!

by Anonymousreply 61November 16, 2020 9:49 PM

Thank you, r52. I just assumed it was cheap and could be bought by the barrel.

by Anonymousreply 62November 16, 2020 9:57 PM

Downstairs - warm caramel

Downstairs bath - soft gold

Downstairs sunroom - butter yellow

Stairs/hallway - light tan ( cut living room color with white)

Master bedroom - dark tan

Guest room - mustard yellow/gold

Kitchen and upstairs bath - white

100 year old oak floors - dark golden brown

White trim

by Anonymousreply 63November 16, 2020 10:03 PM

R52, Didn't know "Landlord White" was an actual color, thought it was a joke. It's much more attractive than Navajo White that can look dingy.

by Anonymousreply 64November 16, 2020 10:35 PM

R57, Does the buttercream & white combo make guests feel happier? Does it reflect light on winter or overcast days? How does it look as a background on Zoom meetings?

by Anonymousreply 65November 16, 2020 10:43 PM

After years with darker colors, friends and family who've been over much prefer the buttercream. Common sentiment seems to suggest it doesn't have much personality, but it's warm and inviting. I've tried not to take it too personally, as I liked the blues/reds/greys/oranges that the rooms have been over the years.

The color doesn't do much on Zoom; it makes little impact (nor does it disrupt, either). It's warmer neutral, and it suits me these days, so I am enjoying it (the white trim also reinforces the moulding, and I think that is the most impactful decision I made when going with the buttercream was to not vary from Landlord White, or whatever Benjamin Moore called it).

by Anonymousreply 66November 16, 2020 10:56 PM

I just moved into a new house and had all the rooms (and ceilings) painted SW Shoji White and doors and trim painted SW Pure White. I love it.

by Anonymousreply 69November 17, 2020 4:50 AM

The wall behind my bed is the color of dried cum stains. I've noticed a few spots on the ceiling above my bed as well.

by Anonymousreply 70November 17, 2020 1:02 PM

Outside is light cream and green/grey trim. The same light cream for the internal walls and the ceilings are white. The internal doors are all a darker cream and the skirting boards and picture rails etc vary from room to room. It's a 1930's bungalow so I've used period colours like eau de nil and apricot etc.

Grey living and dining room walls.

Mass construction grade beige (yellowish) everywhere else.

Hate the beige, but it was new construction when we moved in and we didn't see/feel the need to go all in paiting all the other rooms in our 1-bd condo.

Looking to refresh and are leaning towards periwinkle blue and a sandy gray (brown).

Over grey and white. They're not sophisticated anymore thanks to HGTV whorification.

by Anonymousreply 74December 26, 2020 11:05 PM

My tiny galley kitchen room is bright white. My bedroom is a yellowish off-white, dining room/office is tan.

I'm looking for an off-white for the large living room. I have "oak" book shelves and TV table covering one wall, and two red chairs. I'll buy a new couch in six months, haven't decided what color, not too light.

So, darlings, please recommend an OFF-WHITE for my living room. It's fairly bright as far as natural light.

TIA

I've got a mixture of honey oak, walnut, and cherry wood throughout my place, along with slate/stone. Carpeted areas are a warm pewter-ish color shag. Walls are painted in a flat white. I can't recall the exact name of the color but it had "snow" in it. It would be something neutral and suitable for an art gallery, which was my intent.

by Anonymousreply 80December 27, 2020 2:38 AM

White walls work if you have a lot of genuine art on them, which you want to capture people's attention instead of the wall, or if you have very busy patterns on your rugs or furniture. They're not very welcoming, but you can make up for that with warm decor.

One way to make a room come to life which is in an otherwise fairly routine shade, is to have a feature wall on which a painting is the focus. You paint the wall to pick up an undertone or sparsely used color in the picture. With the right lighting it can make a strong painting blaze off the wall, or focus the attention in on a quieter one. You might be able to achieve this with a print, but it's very effective with an original. Doesn't have to be a wildly expensive original, just one you like.

by Anonymousreply 81December 27, 2020 4:06 AM

R79, are the crystal doorknobs the cobalt color from your attachment? That would be pretty terrific. I have a couple of non-colored glass door knobs, and I've never seen them available in any colors.

by Anonymousreply 82December 27, 2020 4:17 AM

the ones in going out of the rooms to the hallway are, the closet one in the office is clear and the closet in my bedroom is black but they all look the same shapewise. and thank you!
