Andrew Christian pulls "Slave" harness after backlash

Andrew Christian just got itself into some serious mess. The company is pulling photos from their retail site that feature a Black model wearing a harness that repeatedly says the word "slave" on it.

***********

But it sounded so tasteful!

They should pull it because it's so fucking tacky looking anyway.

What's the bet that they were trying to provide model diversity by using a black model to show off the underwear (if you can call it that!) and it has all bitten them in the ass. Probably should have thought a lot harder about what they clothed the model in. Oops!

by Anonymousreply 2November 12, 2020 3:37 AM

Oh, for God's sake....

by Anonymousreply 3November 12, 2020 3:41 AM

Yes, of course "slave" is part of BDSM culture, but this was clearly a very stupid move by Andrew Christian.

I mean, this is what happens when you only (or primarily) have only white people in positions of power (whether internally or at their agency.) I'm a, quote, "person of color," and have worked in marketing and advertising for fifteen years -- primarily on the client side. I love our current agency, but the creatives on our account are all white. Very talented, very nice people, but they miss things like this all the time. I'm often having to remind them that we need to consider the POV of a diverse audience. This is why representation matters -- it's not just a "nice to have," it's good for business.

I never would have even noticed the model. It's just so damned ugly. If I came home and found my boyfriend in that I would kick him out of the house quicker than lightning.

by Anonymousreply 5November 12, 2020 3:46 AM

is that a tattoo of a dreamcatcher i see??

Cultural appropriation much??

by Anonymousreply 6November 12, 2020 4:45 AM

Since the model was black (and they don't traditionally have those) it's quite clear they knew exactly what they were doing.

by Anonymousreply 7November 12, 2020 4:50 AM

Actually, r7, they do use some black models.

He ain't black!

by Anonymousreply 9November 12, 2020 6:38 AM

Wasn’t AC supposed to be cancelled awhile ago for some other racially insensitive campaign or product?

by Anonymousreply 10November 12, 2020 11:28 AM

Why did the model agree?

by Anonymousreply 11November 12, 2020 11:59 AM

I didn't mean the guy pictured at r8 is black (that's the Persian porn star Arad Winwin), but that if you click that link you'll see some black models at Andrew Christian's website.

by Anonymousreply 12November 12, 2020 3:32 PM

He should relaunch this but in a more savvy and careful way with either white models or a group photo with models from a range of ethnic backgrounds. Too hot looking a garment to totally ditch because of a notched launch.

by Anonymousreply 13April 6, 2021 3:42 PM

Aw Jesus Christ.

I don’t get the offense. slave/Master is sex play 101

by Anonymousreply 15April 6, 2021 3:47 PM

I agree r15 but in terms of being savvy and avoiding the damage and distraction of a backlash a slight change in tactic would be best for the launch or rather relaunch.

[quote]I don’t get the offense

I do -- that "outfit" offends my eyes. Do people actually buy/wear this or is it another International Male we're-in-on-the-joke situation?

by Anonymousreply 17April 6, 2021 4:01 PM

[quote]I don’t get the offense.

You don't get the offense over slavery? Over putting a black model in a harness that says "slave" all over it? Just because you like "sexplay."

good lord.

by Anonymousreply 18April 6, 2021 4:34 PM

The correct term is now "Enslaved Person." That would be acceptable on the harness.

by Anonymousreply 19April 6, 2021 4:51 PM

[quote]I'm a, quote, "person of color,"

Honey, if you use the word, why the punctuation?

by Anonymousreply 20April 6, 2021 5:03 PM

I think the real scandal is that the model is covering up what I'm sure is his considerable sizemeat.

by Anonymousreply 21April 6, 2021 5:15 PM

r21 Outrageous I agree!!

by Anonymousreply 22April 6, 2021 5:27 PM

I have yet to find anything in the Andrew Christian underwear collection that isn't tacky. It's tacky stripper wear some guys think makes them look stripper level of sexy (spoiler alert: no, it doesn't!).

Personally I prefer Rufskin. They don't go that much overboard with their colors (except for their sportswear, of course).

by Anonymousreply 23April 6, 2021 5:30 PM

Paired with size 14 stilettos, it’s the perfect ensemble for dinner at the Country Club with Mother.

by Anonymousreply 24April 6, 2021 5:33 PM

Good lord that is ugly. The designer should be fired.

by Anonymousreply 25April 6, 2021 6:15 PM

If they had only seen the President's Day show I saw at Jackie 60/Mother with Dean Johnson dressed as Lincoln sat in a chair like his Memorial and two freed black slaves showing their oral gratitude toward him. Emancipation Proclamation indeed.

A mere harness seems positively Hallmark.

by Anonymousreply 26April 6, 2021 6:22 PM

Dean Johnson was murdered by a tender-to-the-touch sufferer of fibromyalgia. Those people are dangerous!

Great. Now Jeremy O. Harris will definitely win the Tony. Thanks a lot, Andrew Christian.

by Anonymousreply 28April 6, 2021 7:03 PM

Jeremy O. Harris was always going to win the Tony. Broadway is woke, you know.

by Anonymousreply 29April 6, 2021 7:41 PM

r24 Gosh you are naughty!!

by Anonymousreply 30April 8, 2021 2:51 AM

It’s Andrew Christian. All the gay whores and twinks will buy it because of the brand. It’s overpriced garbage.

by Anonymousreply 31April 8, 2021 12:41 PM

How much did that little number cost? The item not the model.

by Anonymousreply 32April 8, 2021 12:50 PM

r32 Are you tempted into considering a purchase?!
