I never use a blanket, just the top sheet.
The only weight I want on me when I sleep is the boyfriend.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 7, 2020 11:40 AM |
I don't buy sheet sets, I purchase them individually.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 7, 2020 11:41 AM |
I always use a comforter, and that has its own cover, so I never use the top sheet. Kind of a waste, actually.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 7, 2020 11:41 AM |
In some countries, and in certain wealth categories, there is no such thing as a fitted sheet nor a "sheet set".
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 7, 2020 11:43 AM |
not everyone uses a duvet.
if you use a blanket, you use a top sheet. they're easier to wash.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | November 7, 2020 11:45 AM |
Of course I use a top sheet.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | November 7, 2020 12:04 PM |
I prefer the feel of a top sheet with a light flannel blanket on top of that, but I haven't bought a sheet set in years. Flat sheets last forever so I just replace the fitted sheets, and the ones I have now (just mid priced Company Store sheets) still look new after 7-8 years. I won't replace them unless the elastic gets damaged.

Fitted sheet, duvet, duvet cover. I buy sets (one fitted sheet, one duvet cover, two pillow cases), as well as individual sheets/covers/cases.

by Anonymous | reply 18 | November 7, 2020 12:28 PM |
I use a top sheet. I live in the south and sometimes that is all I need - no blanket required. In the winter I add a duvet on top.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 7, 2020 12:30 PM |
Duvets are drafty. A flat sheet under a blanket keeps me warm.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 7, 2020 12:32 PM |
Sheets ? what the hell, you think I am made of money, I just sleep on the mattress.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 7, 2020 12:33 PM |
I have always thought they should make the bottom half of the top sheet like the fitted bottom sheet. It would never pull out that way.

If I understand correctly, the blanket lays ON TOP of that "top sheet", correct?
I think that's an American thing, as I've only encountered blankets in a "sleeve" (enclosed by three sides, open at the bottom) in European countries.

How does this work? You have sex in between the top sheet and your blanket?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 7, 2020 12:54 PM |

If it was just me in the bed, I'd probably have a comforter under me and a comforter over me (two in the winter). However, in an attempt to civilize me somewhat, my partner insists on a sheet on the bottom, one also on top, and a comforter over that.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 7, 2020 1:05 PM |
R31, I fold my underwear. What’s wrong with that?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 7, 2020 1:07 PM |
OF COURSE, ONE USES THE TOP SHEET!
What kind of heathens are posting here? You go between the sheets. Blankets, comforters go on top.
There is NO acceptable alternative.
And tuck in the top sheet at the foot of the bed.

I sleep under the fitted sheet. I like to be very tightly tucked in.

by Anonymous | reply 37 | November 7, 2020 1:10 PM |
If you’re handy, you can cut the top sheet in even sections and sew additional pillowcases. If your dog sleeps with you, you have to wash the covers frequently anyway. Why bother with the top sheet?

What the fuck is a top sheet?!?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 7, 2020 1:38 PM |
R45, I basically make the bed with myself inside of it. It’s not easy, but I attach all the corners of the fitted sheet with myself underneath it. It’s so cozy.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | November 7, 2020 1:39 PM |
It's the flat sheet, r46. Honestly don't know why it's called the "top" sheet, that doesn't make much sense to me.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 7, 2020 1:40 PM |
Because it’s supposed to be on the top of the sheets.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 7, 2020 1:44 PM |
If it’s the flat sheet then don’t you just use it like a regular sheet? Why are you using the flat sheet and a fitted sheet together?? Sheet sets give you one of each to give you a choice of which one to use since some people don’t like fitted sheets.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 7, 2020 1:44 PM |

I've never heard of not using the top/flat sheet.
I change and wash my sheets every few days. But I don't wash my duvet that much because the top sheet is there to protect the duvet.
Besides, I love getting into a bed with cold, crisp sheets, even in the dead of winter. You can't do that if you don't have a top sheet.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 7, 2020 1:49 PM |
“Me” and “myself” are not synonyms, shit for brains. Do you say “I was there by me” or “I was there by myself”?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 7, 2020 1:49 PM |
I’ve seriously never heard of a top sheet. I’m surprised it’s such an essential thing that everyone uses. Are you guys all from other countries or the US?
by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 7, 2020 1:49 PM |
Does a duvet cover (often used with a down comforter) change the need for a top sheet?
by Anonymous | reply 60 | November 7, 2020 1:52 PM |
I have sheet sets made. It is vulgar not to use a top sheet when sleeping. Duvets are unpleasantly heavy.
The real question for the tasteful, normal sleepers who use a top sheet is: Do you properly turn the top sheet over when making the bed, so that the "top" faces the sleeper?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 7, 2020 1:54 PM |
The bottom fitted sheet protects the mattress, while the flat top sheet protects the bed covers laid over it like comforters and duvets.
A brief search online shows a lot of articles declaring people monsters if they don't use a top sheet, and others declaring you monsters if you DO.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 7, 2020 1:54 PM |
I do, R61. It looks nicer and feels more comfortable when I pull the sheets up at night.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | November 7, 2020 1:55 PM |
Nope I use a duvet. The top sheets are in a closet somewhere.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | November 7, 2020 1:57 PM |
R61, Yes, I do. And I don't understand why anyone would buy a flat sheet simply to store it, but never use it.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 7, 2020 1:57 PM |
I cut a hole in the top sheet and then hang it across my the front entry way a few feet before the door and then I invite special friends over. 🕳
by Anonymous | reply 66 | November 7, 2020 1:58 PM |
It does seem weird to buy a sheet set when you won't be using the flat sheet. You can get sheet separates at any bedding store.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | November 7, 2020 1:58 PM |
[quote] “Me” and “myself” are not synonyms, shit for brains. Do you say “I was there by me” or “I was there by myself”?
Of course you wouldn’t, you muppet. When the word is appropriate it gets used.
But you would also say, “it’s just me in bed.” Or, “with just me inside it,” or “with just me under it.”
What is this obsession people have with trying to sound important and referring to themselves constantly as “myself”?
Look around on this site. This is consistently considered one of the most irritating things here in any post relating to these type of things.

If you're using a blanket, then of course you need a top sheet to go between it and you. If you use a comforter like I do, that has its own (usually cotton, occasionally linen or even silk) fitted cover that replaces the top sheet.

R109 I do the same with a sheet over my quilt. My pets sleep with me and shed so much. This way I don’t have to wash the quilt so often.
If you people who don’t use a top sheet aren’t washing your blanket or duvet cover every couple of weeks, well that’s just unhygienic.

Of course the comforters are in covers of their own that are washed just as regularly as the sheets and pillowcases!
