Jacqueline Stewart, TCM Movie Hostess - Dull as Dishwater

Okay, okay, I know we're supposed to be impressed that TCM finally hired an African American woman for their movie hosting crew, and Jacqueline has higher education cred as a university film professor and silent film expert, but damn - the woman is as wooden as an oak tree whenever she's on camera. She has no personality and no camera presence. When she introduces movies, it's as if she's reading the teleprompter without any understanding of what the words in front of her mean.

This woman is the worst hire TCM has made since Tiffany Vasquez, and Tiffany was pretty bad.

She sometimes introduces films by women directors with Alicia Malone, and that's when you really see how dull Jacqueline is. Alicia has so much passion for films, and that really comes through when she's talking about them. Jacqueline, on the other hand, just kind of sits there blankly and never has any personal insight into the movies being discussed.

You would think a film historian and professor like her would have a lot to say and would be enthusiastic about it.

Saw her introducing a 104-year old movie called "Shoes" a few weeks ago. It was a movie about a poor girl who goes to work every day to support her family, and who finally trades her virtue for a new pair of shoes to replace her old worn out ones.

The fact that this subject was tackled 104 years ago, and the fact that a 104-year old movie still exists, should have had Jacqueline jumping for joy. But she was monotone and bland in her introduction, almost as if she was introducing a movie that was made 6 months ago.

She actually makes Tiffany Vasquez look good.

Dave Karger is lovely to look at. The rest—Ben got where he is because he comes from Old Hollywood royalty, Eddie is a niche guy, Alicia has the most annoying voice. Jacqueline is smart, but as others have pointed, dull (and as a retired professor I know from dull academics).

I like Dave and Ben the best. Dave loves movies and has real enthusiasm about the films he presents, and Ben has a lot of insider knowledge. I like Eddie just because he has so much knowledge and insight about noir films, and even though Alicia's voice is annoying, she's another one who really loves movies and that comes through in her segments.

Jacqueline is just plain boring. I wonder how long she'll last. I mean, there are only so many silent films she can talk about.

Alicia Malone sounds like a moron. Everytime I see her, my first thought is- who did she suck to get this gig?

I really miss Robert Osborne - the last real TCM connection to the golden age of Hollywood. He loved the glitz, the glamour, the wonder of it all, and he was like a walking encyclopedia of classic film knowledge.

I love her. I wish she had a better gig than Silents.

Remember when it seemed like they were grooming Drew Barrymore to somehow appear on TCM? I recall her co-hosting with Robert Osborne a few times. We dodged a bullet with that not working out.

by Anonymousreply 8November 5, 2020 1:51 PM

R8 They also featured batshit crazy Rose McGowan on a few episodes with Osborne. Talk about dodging a bullet!

by Anonymousreply 9November 5, 2020 1:52 PM

R9, I completely forgot about Rose being on there as well. I wonder whose call that was to have them both on there?

by Anonymousreply 10November 5, 2020 1:59 PM

R10 I think there was a period where TCM was trying to woo younger viewers, so they brought in celebrities to co-host some of the segments. They used to have Alec Baldwin co-host a lot, too.

I HATE ALL of them. Jacqueline Stewart is actually the best host of the bunch and that's not saying much. OP, "hostess"? Gramps, have a MiraLAX.

If only I were still around.....I've been doing this gig since 1958, folks.

R7 But aren't silent films really her "thing?"

by Anonymousreply 14November 5, 2020 2:54 PM

R14 You mean the idiot yoga dude who was walking around with paper straws?

by Anonymousreply 15November 5, 2020 2:54 PM

^ Sorry. Wrong thread. Hate it when that happens.

by Anonymousreply 16November 5, 2020 2:56 PM

LOL livened things up there for a moment R15.
