"On Nov. 3 there is an elderly man contest," #SNL host John Mulaney said of the upcoming presidential election. "Just rest assured, no matter what happens, nothing will change in the United States."
John Mulaney under Attack for Saying Nothing Will Change Under Biden Administration

Sure. Just like nothing's changed since 2016.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 2, 2020 4:41 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 2 | November 2, 2020 4:45 AM |
I am so sick of false equivalency.
"There's no difference between a polar bear and a Siamese cat. They're both furry mammals who eat meat and make sounds."
"There's no difference between shit and chocolate cake. Any Trump voter will tell you that much."
"There's no difference between chanterelles and death-caps. They're both mushrooms."
"There's no difference between Lord Elrond and Tinkerbell. They're both drama-queen fairies."
Etc.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | November 2, 2020 4:47 AM |
Nothing will change for Mulaney, certainly.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | November 2, 2020 4:52 AM |
R3, Neither party give a single fuck about anybody except their wealthy donors and neither one supports universal health care. Both suck.

God forbid, Trump wins again, then perhaps Mulaney's words will be of some strange comfort.
I am hoping for a landslide, however.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 2, 2020 5:20 AM |
I remember, just before the 2016 election, the Washington Post published a piece that told us why, whether Clinton or Trump won, everything would be just hunky-dory, and life would merrily go on, because of separation of powers and other protections built into the Constitution. I remember reading that, whether yet knowing who would win, and thinking, "This is bullshit."
And I was right.

Is Mulaney a deplorable?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | November 2, 2020 5:48 AM |
No John is not a deplorable, he is most likely a Bernie Bro. The nothing will change thing is big among that group because they think republicans and democrats are the same and only Bernie can save us with his so-called revolution.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | November 2, 2020 5:56 AM |
Things will change.
But if you believe Joe Biden himself - and you do, don't you guys? like his words matter and are not just mouth flaps? - nothing will *fundamentally* change, particularly for the wealthy. So rest easy there.
Bernie Sanders can't save anything. He's bringing up things he'll do in January. The foreclosures etc are now.

by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 2, 2020 6:07 AM |
Biden himself has said that nothing will change under him, so you can't complain when other people hold that against him.
I do think certain things will change, for good - at least there won't be a President that incites violence against Muslim Congresswomen and Conservatives judges won't be nominated for the next 4 years. But he said what he said.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 2, 2020 6:11 AM |
Did Sue Cunt Sarandon write that line for Mulaney?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | November 2, 2020 6:15 AM |

It would be interesting to see people list out changes in laws and regulations that have directly impacted them personally. Obviously, Covid-19 doesn’t count. Between 2016 and 2020, for me, the only thing I can think of at the moment is the tax law change. I receive a smaller refund, but pay slightly less in federal taxes. For all the sound and fury, pretty much everything else is the same.

Young, rich, well connected, straight white guy doesn’t care about civil rights for women or gays or people of color nor how many more hundreds of thousands of people will senselessly die from preventable illness or go hungry during an economic collapse. Shocking.
I have an idea: how about we stop giving platforms to guys like Mulaney? I’m ready to muzzle every white (and some Asian guys) who stick their dicks in snatch.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 2, 2020 7:47 AM |
Tina Fey ran into a similar obliviousness controversy when she did that Weekend Update bit about how women should eat sheet cakes instead of troubling themselves by paying attention to the Charlottesville Nazis.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 2, 2020 8:21 AM |
He also said:
"But just rest assured, no matter what happens, nothing much will change in the United States. The rich will continue to prosper while the poor languish, families will be upended by mental illness and drug addiction, Jane Lynch will continue to book lots of projects, and when she does she’ll deliver, she’s so good at being on TV."
Some people felt he is trivializing the election.
Some people felt that it's better understood what he's saying in context.
Some people said well he's just a comic and everything he said was hyperbole.
I think it's up to you how you feel about it but it wasn't as clear cut as saying, "Nothing will change under a Biden Administration." I really don't think he's dumb enough to think that "nothing" will change and this is the equivalent of saying, "he's just as bad as Trump."
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 2, 2020 9:32 AM |
It doesn't matter which addled geriatric wins the election on Tuesday. America will continue on its angry, violent, bigoted and racist self-destruction.

Biden's exact words are "I am transitional president". Whatever that means it certainly does NOT mean that nothinbg is going to change. I expect him to make some big moves since he is not planning to get re-elected.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 2, 2020 9:52 AM |

Actually Biden is better than Trump but if the hard left overplays its hand there will be a reaction and it will be Cotton or Hawley in four years. Mark my words.

[quote] Biden's exact words are "I am transitional president". Whatever that means it certainly does NOT mean that nothinbg is going to change.
The article that troll r16 posted is from June 2019. Even then, Biden was only telling a group of wealthy donors that their standard of living would not change, but one can hardly consider a quote from the pre-covid era as evidence that Biden doesn’t plan to change anything about the US of 2020.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 2, 2020 10:31 AM |
Do t worry r22. The clock is ticking on your tax break. Look for them to skyrocket in 7 years. But it’s ok. The corporate ones are permanent. Read it
And the Covid response certainly does count. I know you would like to pretend that it doesn’t, but let me mention an event we call February. It’s where we did nothing while the virus spread because your hero was in denial and didn’t pay attention until the market tanked.
Fucking douche bag

I don't think John is a bad guy and I think his standup is funny, but he fits the stereotypical Bernie Bro MO. White, under 40, comes from a well off family, jaded, and now he wants to save the world the Bernie way. These guys Mulaney, Seth Meyers, Chris Hayes and a host of others mean well, they can just afford to a different world view. Because they're not going to lose either way.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 2, 2020 12:15 PM |
He's just a whiny BernieBro. All of the people saying he's right are the same: spoiled brats who didn't once think about how Biden wouldn't have handled the pandemic the same way Trump did, because that just doesn't affect them much, and if it doesn't affect them directly, it might as well not even be a thing.

by Anonymous | reply 44 | November 2, 2020 12:39 PM |
If your an upper middle class person I guess. I have not had any tax benefits and have seen a lot of job losses in my area even pre Covid. We lost about 5,000 manufacturing and customer service jobs. Since Covid we are hovering around 20% unemployment. It’s still a sellers housing market though and Young couples who try to stay here lose out to cash buyers so I can only assume that investors and landlords think times are still great.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | November 2, 2020 12:40 PM |
You mean the Lincoln Project that Datalounmeg is so gaga over, R43?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 2, 2020 12:42 PM |
If Joe wins, it will take a lot of pushing from progressives to get anything useful done. I get that his natural instincts are compromise, and that sort of sanity is a big part of his appeal. But we have a ridiculously top heavy corpocracy and progressives will have to fight tooth and nail to even make a dent there. Certainly we should increase taxes on the rich, increase the minimum wage at least, and hopefully get some kind of basic income started.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | November 2, 2020 12:43 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 52 | November 2, 2020 1:15 PM |
I wonder that too r52. They've burned so many bridges, and are having so much fun doing it, that I wonder if they'll just keep going after Trumpistas and various loons on the right as long as they can. I suppose they could turn, but if they do, hope we're ready. There is a rising generation of Democrats that don't seem to accept the Dems always on the defensive rules.

R43 the Lincoln Project will probably turn its attention to changing, to the extent possible, the post-Trump Republican Party. They could be an organization within that party for more moderate or at least non-racist Republicans to rally.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 2, 2020 1:54 PM |
I think Lincoln Project will continue be to as asset to us until 2024. If Trump loses they will attempt to rid the party and the 2024 election of the Trump henchmen and candidates who appeal to the Trump base. If Trump loses, in a year of record turnout, it is a resounding message that the Republicans have got to come back to the center and the Lincoln project can help that happen.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 2, 2020 2:06 PM |

Yes, he should be allowed to have his own opinions, but it was bad judgment to say it 3 days before a major election. That's all we need, an excuse for people not to vote because "they're both the same." It was irresponsible. He should have left it at the "elderly man contest."

by Anonymous | reply 74 | November 2, 2020 7:10 PM |
Those of you who even hint that there is not a world of difference are either incredibly stupid or willfully self destructive. On every front life will be better under Biden- he DOES want universal health coverage, he simply is not married to a single source (there are many versions world over), he will address the environment and climate change, he will develop Federal pandemic policy, he will address Citizens United, he will increase tax on corporations and the very wealthy, he will protect the rights all Americans, he will address immigration and get kids out of cages, he will address prison reform, he will protect a woman’s right to her health decisions, he will address infrastructure. He will re-engage with our allies on trade and mutual security.
All these policies and positions are in his platform and are light years better for Americans and the world in general. No difference? Lordy who knew how ludicrous this board can be?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | November 2, 2020 7:23 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 2, 2020 7:31 PM |
There is a bunch of well off people who right now are vacationing in Mexico (what covid?), already have fantastic health insurance through their 6 figure jobs, live in gated communities etc. A friend of mine is in that position and he and his husband are in PV right now posting speedo selfies, their twins at home with the nanny and they didn't bother to vote because 'they're basically the same'. I mentioned the SC, their marriage rights etc.. and they said they'll just move to Paris because their law firm has an office there and the boys are young enough to pick up the language. What can you do.

The most funny thing about John Mulaney was when he somehow got a Seinfeld style sitcom greenlit called "Mulaney" (naturally) where he played a fictionalized version of himself with bits of his stand-up interspersed between the scenes. He was quickly discovered to be an unfunny dildo and Fox halted completing filming for the season and only aired 13 episodes before canceling it.
