What does Plaza Athénée mean?

I guess Athenian meeting place. But surely there must be more to it than just that; there has to be more to it, to give the name to a great hotel in Paris. Your thoughts DLers please.

It means hotel I can stay at on HBO’s dime if I hijack the plot in the final season

by Anonymousreply 1November 2, 2020 12:42 AM

It means 2000 EU a night.

by Anonymousreply 2November 2, 2020 12:44 AM

US$20,000 per night for the hotel's premier suite.

by Anonymousreply 3November 2, 2020 12:55 AM

It belongs to the Sultan of Brunei who is keen on beheading homos.

by Anonymousreply 4November 2, 2020 1:01 AM

Are you known as the deep thinker among your friends, OP?

by Anonymousreply 5November 2, 2020 1:04 AM

There's also one in New York- not that anyone is going there. I always stayed there in the 2000s. I could always depend on the cab drivers trying to drop me off at the fucking Plaza!

Life was so simple then.

by Anonymousreply 6November 2, 2020 1:06 AM

It's a historic hotel in the 8th, owned by Brunei.

Avoid.

by Anonymousreply 7November 2, 2020 1:08 AM

What does the name mean (FFS)?

by Anonymousreply 8November 2, 2020 1:09 AM

It's closed now. I stayed in one in Bangkok which was a franchise--owned by a local plutocrat. It was very nice.

by Anonymousreply 9November 2, 2020 1:10 AM

Athenian Plaza Rose.

by Anonymousreply 10November 2, 2020 1:12 AM

[quote] Athenian Plaza Rose

Why?

by Anonymousreply 11November 2, 2020 1:20 AM

It's a brand name.

It was the Hotel Plaza when it first opened, there were two with the same name at the time, but 'Plaza' wasn't trademarked in France so they tacked on the Athénée to avoid a lawsuit.

R8 An Athénée is an athanaeum - a temple to the goddess Athena, Athène in French.

It's definitely not closed-closed, but they're on confinement 2 in France for... a while, at least. It's still one of the top 10 hotels in Paris.

by Anonymousreply 12November 2, 2020 1:22 AM

Why not Plaza Parisien; where does the Athénée come from?

[quote] An Athénée is an athanaeum - a temple to the goddess Athena, Athène in French.

Thanks R12, you advance the discussion... unlike some...

by Anonymousreply 13November 2, 2020 1:27 AM

Athénée / Athenaeum appears to mean a school or academy.

Don't worry R15 the Brunei oil wells keep on gushing in the pandemic.

by Anonymousreply 16November 2, 2020 2:07 AM

It means "free public toilet if you walk briskly past the doormen"

by Anonymousreply 17November 2, 2020 2:12 AM

Tom Driberg in Ruling Passions wrote the best way to get your trick into your hotel in the golden days was to give him an envelope addressed to "Thomas Driberg, Esq TO BE DELIVERED PERSONALLY" and tell the trick to take it to the concierge for directions. Said concierge will direct said trick to your hotel room for fucking. I don't know if Driberg tried this at the Plaza before it was owned by Brunei.

^Works like a charm.

by Anonymousreply 19November 2, 2020 3:01 AM

Plaza Athénée is a oddly mixed name. "Athénée" is French for Atheneum, while "plaza" is Spanish for a public meeting place or city square. The French equivalent is "place" /plas/, so why wasn't it called Hôtel Place Athénée?

by Anonymousreply 20November 2, 2020 3:36 AM

/an oddly mixed name...

by Anonymousreply 21November 2, 2020 3:38 AM

It is rather mysterious.

by Anonymousreply 22November 2, 2020 3:42 AM

R20 Because it was supposed to be called the Hôtel Plaza and they were going to get sued by the other Hôtel Plaza in Paris at the time (1909?) even though they had never registered the trademark in France. So they tacked on the « Athénée », and a brand was born. The other Plaza had opened in NY in 1907 (different owners, same name) and seems to have made a name for itself immediately.

by Anonymousreply 23November 2, 2020 4:13 AM

OP: If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

by Anonymousreply 24November 2, 2020 4:41 AM

R24, such a bitch.

by Anonymousreply 25November 2, 2020 1:50 PM
