Is It Just Me or Do Male Actors' Heads Get Bigger as They Age?

The media spends a lot of time judging the appearance of aging actresses, from pointing out their botched plastic surgery to tearing down the ones who have the audacity to not look 25 when they're 45. Article continues below advertisement

However, one thing everyone likes to conveniently ignore are male actors, which is hilarious because they change with age too, and not always "like fine wine."

In fact, you may not have noticed, but many male stars' heads start growing as they get older, taking on an expanded, bloated look. It's a condition I like to call "bigger head syndrome," and it usually hits actors when they're in their late '30s. Article continues below advertisement

I'm not the only one to notice this. Celebrities' gigantic heads are something that has perplexed people for years. According to the "big head theory," the Hollywood rule of thumb is that "the bigger the head, the bigger the star." In other words, if you have a bowling ball for a head, you're more likely to be leading man material.

Unfortunately, once those bobblehead actors reach a certain age, their already-massive craniums swell to epically huge proportions. And once you start to notice it, you can't ever unsee it.

Below, a few examples of what I'm talking about (you've been warned

Bradley had either a chin implant or jaw fillers, that's why his head looks bigger

by Anonymousreply 1October 28, 2020 5:35 AM

It's called a receding hairline.

by Anonymousreply 2October 28, 2020 5:38 AM

Larger heads are photogenic, and a lot of successful film and TV actors tend to have this feature. What’s going on in those photos is just weight gain and age, though.

by Anonymousreply 3October 28, 2020 5:42 AM

OMG. You should watch "Magic" with Anthony Hopkins and Ann-Margret.

Not only do they both have ginormous heads, but Hopkins has a ventriloquist dummy/doppelganger, and the head on that thing is even more out of proportion thanHopkin's head.

Every time he lifts the dummy up, he looks like he's about to have a hernia.

I dare you not to laugh.

Their face just fills out. Their cheeks get fatter, like their midsections. Vis. Frank Sinatra or Charles Bronson.

by Anonymousreply 5October 28, 2020 6:14 AM

Yup, it's called aging.

by Anonymousreply 6October 28, 2020 6:25 AM

This is a 40s aging thing, not just an actor thing.

Especially if you bulk up in the gym for some reason. (I did, and hate it.) You can't reverse it.

by Anonymousreply 7October 28, 2020 6:33 AM

It is called aging. Their skin loosen and they gain weight. What kind of idiot write an article like that.

by Anonymousreply 8October 28, 2020 6:42 AM

Not just men. I was thinking this watching the Emmy awards. Jennifer Aniston's head looked so big in that little box they put up of the nominees,

by Anonymousreply 9October 28, 2020 6:44 AM

I remember in an acting class I took in school the teacher said you need a large head to be a movie star. Fill up the screen I guess.

I know an actor with a small head. He always looks sort of weaselly in his films.

by Anonymousreply 10October 28, 2020 6:46 AM

This is called aging. Happens to us all. And yes, a bigger head and well defined features are a plus. It is called "stage face".

by Anonymousreply 11October 28, 2020 6:57 AM

Interesting topic. Bradley changed the shape of his jaw and chin, however. Looks like he had a squarer winged chin implant placed to masculinize his features more. As well as subtle jaw widening work. Plus his cheeks have been filled or he got implants and that’s what gives him Barry Manilow face I think . Many faces do age where they get wide, however. Especially women. The fat pads fall and widen the lower half of the face and jaw going from a heart shape to more of a square. That’s where a good facelift comes in.

It's big fat jowls. Val Kilmer and Matthew Perry are excellent examples.

The Cooper pics aren't from the same angle. His head is turned slightly in the left pic.

I have come to think that being looked at obsessively by people you don’t know actually changes the way your face and body are assembled – not just in the obvious ways of enhanced fashion sense or tricks of charm and self-possession, but in the illusion of size. The heads of world-class celebrities literally seem to enlarge. Hillary Clinton’s, for instance, has grown enormously since she was the mere wife of the governor of Arkansas. It nods when she talks to you like a balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. The years of limelight so inflated the circumference of Jackie O’s cranium, it seemed her real face must be concealed by an oversized Halloween mask. If you looked into her eyes, you could see her in there somewhere, screaming.

When he was younger, Chris O'Donnell looked like the extremely hot innocent boy next door you might like to blow. Sadly, he now looks like the good ole neighbor next door who shows crack when he's washing his bass boat and you look away.

by Anonymousreply 19October 30, 2020 7:03 PM

Heads, faces, and facial features don't grow at a uniform rate as some people age.

Ellen D is terrifying, She's turning into Dumbo, or some creepy garden gnome.

Face bloat actually is attributed to cranioskeletal changes, which is not a symptom of aging itself. Expanding face syndrome is a result of high dairy content/high animal protein diet which over time changes the shape of the underlying bone and tissue, making the face appear larger.

The secret to a slim, early 20’s face shape at 35 (I turn 35 in three months. A vegan diet! No animal products. All organic. Great skin and no ugly wide face.

by Anonymousreply 24October 30, 2020 7:11 PM

Oh my god, Gyllenhaal! He looks like an age-progression mockup of a missing person. I never thought he was attractive, but looking at the comparison photos, Young JG is so much better. I'd definitely go for him.

I have noticed this phenomenon, by the way, and I believe it has to do with testosterone as men age. Take a look at tomcats (unneutered males) and other adult male animals. Their faces and heads get bigger and heavier with time.

by Anonymousreply 25October 30, 2020 7:12 PM

Look at the size of Jake's enormous noggin relative to teeny little Lilly Collins. His head is twice the size of hers.

Part of it is his height, part is the angle of the photo. But his head is ENORMOUS.

I'm always struck by how big Humphrey Bogart's head is in comparison to his hairy little body.

He's forgotten now, but popular 1930s star John Boles (STELLA DALLAS) had the biggest head in show business.

by Anonymousreply 30October 30, 2020 7:37 PM

David Boreanaz owns this thread.

Shit. Now I don't feel so bad that I was hot AF in my 20s and now have a pumpkin head that makes kids scream in terror around this time of year.

by Anonymousreply 32October 30, 2020 8:27 PM

Men's faces tend to fill out as they age. That may give the appearance of a larger head (as well as what a previous poster said about a receding hairline). Their heads are not actually larger.

by Anonymousreply 33October 31, 2020 12:27 AM

R20, 21: Degeneres chain-smoked until about 7 years ago, hence the deep lines and 'fried' look. She should lose the little boy haircut and get back to the longer version that helped hide those 'Jumbo' ears...

by Anonymousreply 34October 31, 2020 2:47 PM

Gyllenhaal had an obvious square chin implant placed as well. I think it added to the huge head look but he does look more masculine.
