Wasn't Mithradates secret that he built up his own tolerance for poisons for years and years so nobody could poison him, while he poisoned everybody else? Something like that.

It wasn't a secret. Everybody was doing things like that R3. Every castle had a poison garden and every noble had professional tasters. Indeed one reason for Mithradates' wealth was he controlled the world's largest arsenic mines at a time when everyone wanted arsenic. Unfortunately, arsenic builds up instead of establishing tolerance.
