You can get a demerit from the Israeli public if you go overseas and make a career out of being Israeli but never bother coming back to perform in Israel, much less pay taxes. Aliza Kashi carried that stigma, and so did Theodore Bikel to an extent, but Aliza Kashi came back to perform during the Yom Kippur War, and she took the occasion of a TV appearance to sling a curse at the Arabs. There are two things to realize about this: that there was only one TV channel in Israel, so everyone who was watching TV was watching Aliza Kashi; and that Israel has always firmly distinguished between its political problems with the Arab regimes and its attitude toward the Arab people, refraining from demonizing Arabs in general and hoping not to be demonized in return. There was great resentment that Aliza Kashi came in on a flying visit from her overseas career and embarrassed the country she'd left behind by cursing the Arabs while guesting on that country's media platform
