I am a 29 year old white man, and gentrification is not a good thing. You want to fix the streets and the sidewalks and the buildings? Go for it, but that should not result in rent being doubled to tripled to push people of color out. If the end result is rents tripling to where only white and some Asian people can afford it, then it is not ok.
And that outdated belief that gentrification = less crime is just that, outdated. The homeless and struggling of today aren't the same as those of the past, they are fighting back and they do not care. Crime has been on the rise yearly since NYC has been overly gentrified, and Brooklyn, where gentrification is happening the most, is the top of the list of crimes.
Make rents affordable, stop making everything so expensive, where more than middle class can be able to live, and that will bring crime down.

They had a chance though when all the high end brands like Louie Vuitton, Neiman Marcus, Gucci, Nordstrom, etc. wanted to set up shop there. The Tenderloin said No, we don’t want you here. So the shops moved a few blocks over to what is now the bustling and booming Union Square and transformed that area.
