I'd say spunky or cute rather than beautiful.
I saw him at Clontarf a few years ago and he looked like just another overweight Greek man.
I can make no judgement on his vocal ability because he had an army of producers, mixers, and microphones.

You do realize he had some plastic surgery before the Faith album, right? He talks about it in Faith 90, where he got a prettier face for the boys at MTV.
He was so handsome (but very young) in the Club Tropicana video.
I will always feel pain and sadness for him and his later years - if only he could have gotten out of it somehow. I feel the same for Whitney. Two gay singers who were pushed and pushed around so much.

by Anonymous | reply 95 | October 25, 2020 7:34 PM |
R91 I agree. You wonder how someone can appear to have so much , yet at the same time have so little. He aged before his time. It was partly from his smoking (both tobacco & pot) then the drugs but also from long term unhappiness. His adult life seemed defined by the loss of his partner & mother. I think the public screwed up with him too. In my view he had a talent like no one else. I'll be enjoying his music for the rest of my life.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | October 27, 2020 6:31 AM |
Looking back I know it's hard to believe he could pass for straight but I kid you not most people believed he was. Why? Becuase at that time the only obviously gay people were Richard Simmons or Boy George.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | October 27, 2020 7:06 AM |
He had a short beard LONG before they become popular and ubiquitous like you see now. And why do so many men like them? Because they make you look more masculine and is many cases more attractive. Back in the 80's most queens and straight men for that matter were clean, clean shaven.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | October 27, 2020 7:11 AM |

[quote]Looking back I know it's hard to believe he could pass for straight but I kid you not most people believed he was. Why? Because at that time the only obviously gay people were Richard Simmons or Boy George.
It's hard for some people to believe that George used to be straight, then he was bisexual, then he was gay. His relationships with women inspired his first albums, his relationships with men inspired his later albums. In his own words, he first had a gay relationship at 27 (1990) - he had relationships with women before that.
The era was notorious for musicians who refused to conform to traditional sex and gender norms. Phil Oakey had long hair, wore lipstick and eye shadow, but was fucking his female band member. Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet were pretty boys who wore lots of make up and were far from being alpha males, yet were all visibly heterosexual. If the Eurythmics were to launch their act today Annie Lennox would be a gender nonconforming trans masculine non binary demi womxn, but 40 years ago she was simply a heterosexual woman in a group with her boyfriend who had short hair played with her appearance and occasionally dressed up as a man.
Pet Shop Boys, The Communards/Bronski Beat, Erasure, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Marilyn, Pete Burns were all visibly queer even if not totally out during that period.

by Anonymous | reply 103 | October 27, 2020 2:38 PM |
R100 I'm not so sure George was ever straight. You can't believe everything he said as after reading several bios on him he contradicted himself fairly often. Others who knew him when he was very young recount his being in gay clubs clearly having sex with men early on. He took dramatic license with his uncle's suicide when he wrote about his death occurring on the day he was born. This is false. His uncle killed himself when George was six months old. He also didn't do it buy sticking his head in a gas oven but by pill overdose.
I'm also not convinced George's story about writing his parents a letter after Anselmo died is the truth either. George never owed the public an accounting of how he came out to his mom & dad. I just think he cooked up what sounded the best and went with that. I think how much his mother knew before her death is questionable. He went out of his way to deny the rumor he and Kenny had broken up. Several years later he admitted it was true during a concert when he first sang "Where I Hope You Are." George is a real puzzle to work on for anyone who wants to try and figure him out.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | October 27, 2020 5:06 PM |
In his video bio, George talked about realizing his homosexuality at a young age and sharing the info with Ridgely and a few other people. I think he was in his late teens or early 20s, and Ridgely agreed to help protect George's secret from his father. He would later date Brooke Shields. She was a beard for him during the homophobic 80s, but perhaps he hoped that he could fall in love with a woman and be changed.
Ridgely isn't gay, and they never had sex with each other. Raised in Europe, Ridgely didn't freak out about George's being gay, and they continued being friends and business partners. There's even a video of the two of them uniting to talk about their past...I think it was filmed in the last 15 years, but I cannot find it on youtube.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | October 27, 2020 5:32 PM |
R58 I agree about the sad aura. I thought he looked his best during his 30s then as he got past that he really started to age. I always noticed the deep rings that developed around his neck and wondered if it was a sign of what we now know was heart disease. In any case he seems to have been one of those people like Dylan Thomas and many other artists who are driven to take themselves out early by a life of excess. What will always stand out about George is how he tried to help others while he was here. Usually, you see a lot of really ugly behavior in folks like this. Hemingway liked to shoot pigeons just to watch them suffer. George didn't seem to have a mean streak.

Mz Michaels was grossly ugly for most of the 80s. He had maybe one or two years with his Faith album where he wasn't ugly. I don't care to listen to most of his music anymore. He was tacky and stuck in the 80s.

Honey, straight men in pop and rock looked like this in 1985. George Michael was practically butch with his beard and leather jacket.
I had a friend, a model, whose female friend dated George Michael in the late 80s. She told me George Michael came out to the girl and left her. I can't say I was terribly surprised but since I was a closeted teen I didn't quite know how to react.

I don't believe the cranks claiming the always thought George Michael was "fug." A lot of people on DL have to be nasty and cynical and full of disdain for everything, and it really messes up threads like these where a good discussion could be had, but instead it's 50% "he's fug with no talent and I'm glad he's dead."
by Anonymous | reply 117 | November 11, 2020 12:31 PM |
DLers have the worst taste in men. Is that a fucking surprise? Any thread where they say post who you think is the most beautiful - 90% of them are not just fug but fucking atrociously ugly. DLers are blind and stupid. Mz Michaels was an ugly dude but managed to hide it in a few videos and photos. Without Sony's millions to promote him he would have been like Rob Pattinson in the new Batman. Fucking ugly.
