John Goodman looks better to me for some reason.
John Goodman looks better to me for some reason.
I think it's the longer, fluffier hair.
Laurie Metcalf looks better, too. Maybe they have better lighting.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 22, 2020 1:15 AM |
I thought he either put on some weight or had plastic surgery.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 22, 2020 1:22 AM |
They couldn't just let the joke that Booker looked just like George Clooney get a laugh. They had to cut and paste a flashback scene from 'Roseanne' right into the middle of the scene.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 22, 2020 12:46 PM |
It was so heartwarming to see Darlene and Becky in line to go work at Wellman Plastics. It brought me back to all the times Roseanne and Jackie were there. ❤️
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 22, 2020 12:51 PM |
It was weird that Becky and Darlene though they'd get a preference in being hired at Wellman because their mother worked there. Roseanne revolted against her boss (who was an asshole), and when she quit, several of her friends walked out with her. The personnel files might have been thrown out after 30 years, but in a small town like that, everyone remembers things like that.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 22, 2020 2:05 PM |
Mrs Wellman was an old cunt who hit Roxanne’s car.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 22, 2020 2:07 PM |
😂 I just watched that episode on TV Land not too long ago.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 22, 2020 7:38 PM |
I really did wanna sick Mark’s (beckys husband) dick so bad back then.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 22, 2020 7:42 PM |
I thought Goodman looked like death! He doesn't look well AT ALL! And the gay kid has to be one of the most annoying actors I've seen in a long time. He's awful and ruins the show.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 22, 2020 7:52 PM |
Katy Sagal is a regular in this shitshow now?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 22, 2020 8:13 PM |
Are you sure you’re just not used to seeing Goodman, R10? I’ve been watching him a lot between The Conners, The Righteous Gemstones and various other projects and appearances so maybe it’s grown on me.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 22, 2020 10:42 PM |
That thing is STILL ON? I like the original cast, but never watched this. I do get satisfaction in knowing it must burn Roseanne's ass, however.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 22, 2020 10:56 PM |
It burns every Deplorable’s ass. They swore it would be cancelled years ago and it’s still kicking. That might be why I love it more than anything else.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 22, 2020 11:01 PM |
Sick his duck, r9!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 22, 2020 11:08 PM |
Does Katey Sagal age? She looks basically the same (or better) than when she was Peg Bundy 30 years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 22, 2020 11:12 PM |
R15, he died a long time ago.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 22, 2020 11:25 PM |
This is the best sitcom on TV. And the fact that it’s success must be destroying Roseanne is delicious! I grew up poor white trash (luckily now I’m educated and rich) and it reminds me of a simpler time and fond childhood memories.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 22, 2020 11:25 PM |
Mama died, the car’s broken again, daddy got sick again, unemployment ran out last month again, the house is gonna be foreclosed again, and the kids are gonna eat dirt for Christmas. Again.
There...synopsis of entire season.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 22, 2020 11:25 PM |
Yes, that is everyday life for many Americans, R19. Many people around the world, period. We couldn’t all grow up in a million dollar suburban mcmansion like you.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 22, 2020 11:34 PM |
If I had a dome for every duck I’ve sicked.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 22, 2020 11:38 PM |
R20 I’m not talking about anyone’s social or economic circumstances, I’m talking about plain old stupid. No, I can’t identify with a single issue this family has, but a stupid, repetitive story line that supposedly portrays the average family does nothing but contribute to the dumbing-down of America. And therein is why it’s so popular, I guess. Yee Haa.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 23, 2020 12:57 AM |
How could the house still not be paid off? I know they took a second mortgage for the bike shop but that went belly up almost 30 years ago. They bounced back with The Lunch Box and Dan's job with the city.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 2, 2020 12:00 AM |
Minimum payments, R23. The interest will bury you.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | November 2, 2020 12:10 AM |
The show only works if they're poor, so poor it is.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | November 2, 2020 12:35 AM |
The show is basically poverty porn now. I'm assuming that Jackie will get a breast cancer diagnosis by the end of the season.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | November 2, 2020 1:24 AM |
And Wellman will be shut down again.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 2, 2020 1:30 AM |
It's generational poverty porn.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 2, 2020 1:37 AM |
And yet there is always plenty of disposable money for Halloween costumes and decorations every season.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 2, 2020 2:11 AM |
You guys have clearly never been broke before. Of course there’s always some disposable income. I know people living off tiny disability checks and welfare who still manage to buy new sneakers and clothes. They still eat out and have plenty of booze on hand. But paying off a mortgage is a whole different ballgame. It requires considerable money management and self discipline. Anybody can pull together a few bucks depending on what time of the month it is.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 2, 2020 4:19 AM |
The success of “The Connors” makes me so happy because I know it must piss off Roseanne to high heaven. I’m also glad for Sarah Gilbert’s success. She always made me laugh and I felt her teen angst from the original show. It nice that an unattractive lesbian made it in Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 2, 2020 1:34 PM |
Gilbert spent her "Talk" years sitting in judgement of other's relationships and cuntsplaining all the ways she and 'Linda' were happy and successful in marriage and parenthood. Bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 2, 2020 2:40 PM |
It's a good thing there are black people in the family now to legitimize it. Otherwise it would be unacceptable.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 2, 2020 2:45 PM |
What do you mean, R33? Or am I talking to a troll?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 2, 2020 3:13 PM |
Fuck Sara Gilbert, R32. Yeah, Roseanne fucked up, but Gilbert was waiting in the wings to make her move, and when everything came to a head, she denounced her mentor of thirty years and made herself the central figure of the TV show.
She’s opportunistic Hollywood scum. Don’t fall for the “Aw shucks” down home lesbian act.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 5, 2020 1:51 PM |
True R35......I won't watch the show because of what Sara did.
If it wasn't for Roseanne where would ANY of them be? Would Metcalfe have gotten all of those Broadway gigs without the show? Would anyone consider Goodman for anything?
Rosanne made them and they turned on her the first chance they got - especially Sara. Fuck her.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 5, 2020 2:13 PM |
R33 DJ married a black woman and has a daughter with her who looks 100% African American rather than biracial. The wife was only on one season but the daughter is a regular. The wife was the girl DJ didnt want to kiss as a child because she was black, so it actually makes sense in the story line not just PC reasons. And of the producers did decide to add an African American wife into the story line, what is wrong with that? America families are no longer monoracial.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | November 5, 2020 2:15 PM |
R37 that was actually Roseanne's idea when she was putting season 10 of Roseanne together, she said she insisted on having different races in that family because that's how her real life family is and she wanted a kid who could be LGBT, again like her real family
by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 5, 2020 2:18 PM |
If it wasn't for Roseanne where would ANY of them be? Would Metcalfe have gotten all of those Broadway gigs without the show? Would anyone consider Goodman for anything?
What does that have to do with Roseanne going batshit crazy, R36? Did you forget that part? The entire program was facing cancellation and instead they cut off a limb to stop the disease from spreading throughout the body. You don’t have the right to force everyone to go down with the plane just because you purchased their tickets.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 5, 2020 4:35 PM |
As far as I'm concerned, Roseanne ended when she found out she was pregnant. Everything after in the original run and reboot has sucked blue collar ass.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 5, 2020 5:00 PM |
The weird part for me is I really like John Goodman as an actor but I HATE him in the Dan role.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 5, 2020 8:35 PM |
There's NO way a woman like the new girlfriend would choose a deadbeat like Dan AND move in that house full of grown kids and cook for them. Ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | November 5, 2020 8:49 PM |
R42 - I grew up in a White trash community in Texas and that scenario you described is actually very common.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | November 5, 2020 8:51 PM |
Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman were both well-regarded actors long before ROSEANNE. Goodman has made 4 movies with the Coen brothers, the first before ROSEANNE. Metcalf is a veteran theatre actress who started with the Steppenwolf Co. and made movies like DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN years before ROSEANNE. It's not like Roseanne or the producers plucked them from complete obscurity.
Of course neither would have the same degree of fame without ROSEANNE. But it's arguable whether ROSEANNE would ever have succeeded without them.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | November 5, 2020 9:01 PM |
Laurie Metcalf is a much better actor than John Goodman. She actually won an Oscar for a movie a couple years ago. She was brilliant as a young girl’s mother.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | November 5, 2020 9:06 PM |
She didn’t win but she was nominated for Lady Bird.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 5, 2020 9:07 PM |
R18 = Sara Gilbert
by Anonymous | reply 47 | November 5, 2020 9:12 PM |
It’s interesting to watch JR Ferguson with graying hair and carrying extra weight when I can still remember him from Burt Reynold’s early 90s series EVENING SHADE playing a teenager.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | November 5, 2020 9:13 PM |
R46 - yes Ladybird! Loved that movie.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 5, 2020 9:13 PM |
Jay Ferguson is hot daddy bear. I liked him as Stan on MAD MEN but I love him on THE CONNERS.
Some (not many) men look better a little fat. He is one of them.

I honestly have never seen John Goodman in a role I didn’t like. He always delivers.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | November 5, 2020 10:08 PM |
Why was Anna Maria Horsford speaking in a different accent than she usually does in that last episode?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | November 5, 2020 10:14 PM |
I may tune in again tonight after reading this thread. I like the reality of the show, and how it's different to almost every American sitcom on today. It seems about every current series only features perfect people in impeccably decorated homes, fashionable clothes, and living an affluent lifestyle. That's not reality.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | November 5, 2020 10:19 PM |
R55 - I agree! And I love (now that Roseanne is gone) not one of the actors has done plastic surgery. They all look like normal people, warts and all.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | November 5, 2020 10:21 PM |
Wellman plastics closed up during the shows original run.
Some of these plots are just lazy. Have Jackie and Becky reopen the Lunch Box. Have Becky and Darlene go back to work at Wellman plastics. It's like they're not even trying.
Thankfully they gave Michael Fishman something to do last week after three years of being on the show.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 5, 2020 10:21 PM |
What other show besides The Connors portrays American poor/working class life, besides Shameless?
by Anonymous | reply 58 | November 5, 2020 10:23 PM |
Mom.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | November 5, 2020 10:27 PM |
Roseanne didn’t make the cast. Matt Williams made Roseanne.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | November 5, 2020 10:28 PM |
R57 - I was actually moved by Michael Fishman’s acting in that episode where the family had moved his daughter out of his house. I cried a little!
by Anonymous | reply 61 | November 5, 2020 10:30 PM |
What they've done to Jackie is criminal.
Metcalf is capable of so much more.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 5, 2020 10:34 PM |
In the real Murikkka, a Midwestern plastics factory would never reopen once production got sold off to China. It’d be nice to think that with covid, some of that type of production would return.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | November 5, 2020 10:34 PM |
R58 [italic] The Middle [/italic] was very real, though the family were not as poor as the Conners, and were a bit more aspirational. There really haven't been any others.

She was on the first season of the reboot
by Anonymous | reply 70 | November 5, 2020 11:07 PM |
R68 - I noticed that.
Bev was on last season. She gave money to Mark but no one else. The woman is in her 90s. Not sure she’s up to acting much these days.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | November 5, 2020 11:36 PM |
R68 but they ALL walked out with Roseanne
How realistic would it be that they hired her back?
by Anonymous | reply 72 | November 5, 2020 11:37 PM |
Estelle is in her 90's and lives on the East Coast.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | November 5, 2020 11:42 PM |
Estelle was in the original “Bonnie and Clyde.”
by Anonymous | reply 74 | November 5, 2020 11:43 PM |
Shockingly, Estelle P was in a musical at Playwrights Horizons early this year. It was a featured role and her stage time was limited, but she was quite good and her singing was better than I'd expected.
She appears to be as sharp as a tack.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | November 5, 2020 11:58 PM |
They said with Estelle living on the east coast as well as the COVID situation and her age at this time they don’t want to subject her to the travel and a possible health issue.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 6, 2020 12:03 AM |
Some of my favorite episodes from the original series included Estelle. Her timing was perfect.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | November 6, 2020 12:13 AM |

I am seriously disappointed that Jay Ferguson does not have a furry chest!
by Anonymous | reply 84 | November 6, 2020 2:50 PM |
I haven't seen the 2nd season, but liked the first season. I remember the episode when David came back and you thought his character was getting back with Becky. Then he chickened out at the end. I remember the conversation with Roseanne on the front porch, when she says "I don't want to be the only one in this house who believes in you". Great scene.

by Anonymous | reply 91 | November 6, 2020 3:25 PM |
THE CONNERS wins its time slot in the ratings. They're not stellar ratings, but solid.
So someone in America is watching.

They couldn't have painted the place, got a new kitchen counter and couch once in 30 years? I like the show but get tired of the constant depression of their poverty, that doesn't actually display how poor people live. If they're eating out and driving cars and changing their sad clothes - drinking beer and having cake....and have the smarts to make such ironic commentary about their life - then fix up the damn house. Before you lose it. Again.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | November 7, 2020 1:25 AM |
They had enough money to relocate their basement stairs at least three times since 1988. First the stairs were in the kitchen, then they were in the laundry room, and now they're in the hallway next to the bedroom.
Talk about a waste of money!
by Anonymous | reply 99 | November 7, 2020 1:34 AM |
The character of Muriel confused me. I felt like she was playing headgames with Roseanne from the start.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | November 7, 2020 1:39 AM |
I know, R98. That couch would have been toast years ago with Dan and Roseanne sitting on it all the time. Most people, even if poor, tend to at least get new furniture once in awhile, or new carpet, etc. I guess they got a new fridge.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | November 7, 2020 1:49 AM |
The couch was replaced a couple times on the show. It just looks the same.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | November 7, 2020 2:34 AM |
DJ appeared in the last two episodes. In last week's episode, in his big scene with his daughter, I thought his acting was great. He also is really good looking lately.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | November 7, 2020 2:41 AM |
How insightful R102. Nobody said it was the Smithsonian. It's not the original couch? Darlene and Becky have been around. Is a gallon of paint for the kitchen cupboards too much to ask for?

It's like "Good Times" for white people.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | November 7, 2020 7:21 AM |
It's Roseanne 2.0. Darlene is Roseanne (the wannabe writer), Ben is Dan, Becky is Jackie, Jackie is Bev... It's how we become our parents. Except Darlene, having some education and living in Chicago, should have been able to have some type of career. And a bunch of adults living in the same house can't scrape together enough money each month to pay the mortgage?

Never got into the original show back in the 90s. Watched a few episodes here and there, but it never became must see TV for me.
Am enjoying the new show quite a bit. Maybe its just that I'm older and have struggled financially from time to time, so I can appreciate struggle to earn enough to pay the rent theme. Smart writing and well acted.
I appreciated r108's observations about how each of the characters has evolved into the next generation. Darlene is now Rosanne, Becky is now Jackie, Jackie is now Bev, etc.

Uhh, that’s my life, R105. There’s plenty of shows with beautiful rich people in immaculate homes for you. Why you feel the need to come in here and shit on one of the VERY few shows that takes another approach, is beyond me. Isn’t there a thread for Yellowstone on here for you? If not, you or R111 are welcome to start it.

They type retarded.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | November 7, 2020 1:32 PM |
R108 is spot on. And they've planted a seed that Darlene will return to her writing after her work day at Wellman. (Good luck with that, Darlene.)
I continue to enjoy most of these actors, but some of the writing this season is really subpar. Jokes are dumb and visible from miles off.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | November 7, 2020 3:01 PM |
I thought the writing on the first season of the Roseanne reboot was good. The writing on The Connors has not been strong. When Roseanne posted that racist comment, didn’t some of the writers quit in outrage including Wanda Sykes? Why didn’t they bring those writers back into the fold after Roseanne was fired?
by Anonymous | reply 115 | November 7, 2020 3:12 PM |
Laurie Metcalf didn't win the Oscar but she was nominated for Lady Bird. I think that was the year Alison Janey won for I Tanya.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | November 7, 2020 3:30 PM |
R115: I think many of those writers got other gigs. And Wanda Sykes and Whitney Cummings probably produced the show as a favor for Roseanne.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | November 7, 2020 4:00 PM |
Whatever you think of Roseanne or the show in the past, if you have a writing credit on this show you can write your ticket. Writers who started out on this show went on to create many shows in the 90s on. Too many to mention.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | November 7, 2020 4:04 PM |
The reboot doesn't hold a candle to the original. During the vast majority of its run, Roseanne never forgot that it was first and foremost a sitcom, and that it had to be funny. And it was often gut bustingly funny, especially from seasons 3 through 6.
This show is so dreary. It's so focused on portraying the economic miseries of this family that it forgot that it's a sitcom as well. The reboot started off okay, and the first season of The Conners wasn't bad. But this season has been a chore to get through.
What else can go wrong for them? I'm expecting somebody to get a cancer diagnosis this season.

R119 Yes. Same thing happened to a degree with the Will & Grace reboot.
It has to be funny. Of course it can be serious too, but saying bitchy things doesn't equal comedy with heart.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | November 7, 2020 4:58 PM |
The best example for me is the episode where Jackie and Roseanne's dad dies. It's probably the funniest episode of the series, but also delves into issues of child abuse, death, and other families. Look at where the episode where they lose electricity. It has got bustingly hilarious, but it is hard is a family in crisis.
The Conners can't hold a candle to that

I like the show, but they do need to up the comedy a bit. Covid, etc., is dreary, but I watch sitcoms to escape the dreariness of life. Not wallow in it.

If you think about it r127 the early Roseanne seasons were very depressing too, it registers a lot upon rewatching as an adult. But it's true, they used to manage to balance it with solid comedy and the current writers need to up their game.

I’ve watched all episodes since the show came back. I’m finding it kind of a chore to watch anymore though. It just isn’t very funny anymore without Roseanne. Say what you will about her, but she was funny.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | November 7, 2020 5:14 PM |
Roseanne was the heart of the show, no doubt. I hate Barr but miss Roseanne Conner at lot. I can't believe she fucked it up so bad and got cancelled (literally and figuratively) so fast.
ps : Barr's been posting bonkers video on her youtube channel, I can hardly watch. I wonder what she'll post now that trump is gone, she might get worse if that's possible.

You might have to wait for a Family Ties reboot.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | November 7, 2020 5:41 PM |

"The Connors" is "your life", R112? Wow, I hope things get better for you. Your life must be hard.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | November 7, 2020 6:43 PM |
R130 is right!! Roseanne Conner was the heart.......don't confuse her with Roseanne Barr.
I can't get past Sara Gilbert's sneaky behind the back takeover of the show. I guess it's because I keep expecting her to be Darlene Conner.......who she has now turned her character into Sara Gilbert. And she ain't nearly as funny or interesting or compelling as Darlene Conner......
by Anonymous | reply 137 | November 7, 2020 7:56 PM |
R133, because in the 90s, Roseanne's mom Bev came out as a late-in-life lesbian. In fact, in the 90s, the show made almost everyone gay, and they got a lot of criticism for it.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | November 7, 2020 8:00 PM |
The other character who doesn't seem true to the past is Becky. As a kid, she was uptight and materialistic. Even though she married Mark and lived in a trailer, she still aspired to go to college. Most of all, she was never sarcastic and goofy; she was always very serious. I know the character is an alcoholic, but they changed her entire personality. Maybe that was so they could make Darlene the straight character (no pun intended).
by Anonymous | reply 139 | November 7, 2020 8:04 PM |
R137: Well, Sara was the one responsible for bringing back the reboot. And one of the reasons she took over the show so the crew wouldn't lose their jobs. Don't forget it was Roseanne that fucked everything up.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | November 7, 2020 8:24 PM |
It was so they could make her the fuck-up Jackie, R139, to Darlene’s Roseanne.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | November 7, 2020 8:24 PM |
I read somewhere that the Connor's youngest child, Jerry Garcia, has been "disowned" by Dan, and that is the explanation for his not being part of the show. But of course that could change if the writers want to use the character for some reason. But it's so stupid. Wasn't Jerry Garcia the most WANTED of all the wretched Connor children? And now it's like he doesn't exist? It's so dumb.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | November 7, 2020 8:36 PM |
Completely agree, r139. The way Darlene and Becky are being written in the reboot is backwards. Having a serious, hard working, mother-of-two Becky and a moody, sarcastic, artsy, childfree Darlene would have been so much better.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | November 7, 2020 8:37 PM |
Also, the show never got into how much the death of Becky's husband Mark had on her. And they didn't say why he died and what state he and Becky were in.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | November 7, 2020 8:37 PM |
R142: I don't know why I remember this but the season of the reboot, the Thanksgiving episode Roseanne was praying and she mentioned she's praying for Jerry on the fidhing boat and how it doesn't have a phone and Dan made a face so you know something was going on there. It would've made a great storyline if he tried to come back for Roseanne's funeral. And what happened to Jackie's son Andy?
by Anonymous | reply 145 | November 7, 2020 8:42 PM |
Andy no longer exists. The showrunner told us so in an interview.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | November 7, 2020 8:48 PM |
Ben has more chemistry with Becky than with Darlene. When I watch, I don't understand why he's with Darlene.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | November 7, 2020 8:51 PM |
It’s too bad Andy doesn’t exist in this new universe. That could be a reason to bring Fred back around every so often. I was kind of hoping Leon might surface, too.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | November 7, 2020 8:52 PM |
They should just tell us that Andy became a Scientologist, and consequently, has cut off contact with his mother. End of story.
Jerry could have gotten mixed up in drugs and Dan threw him out of the house. So maybe Jerry is rotting in prison somewhere and is being released soon - a very special episode.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | November 7, 2020 8:56 PM |
Yea Sara Gilbert is a philanthropist who was worried about the cast and crew of the show.
She may have been worried about her OWN paycheck, but that's about it.......and if they're so intent on getting away from the original show - why do they keep referencing it and bringing back actors and characters from it?
Maybe because it's a shadow of its former self......it's the Donna Reed Show without Donna Reed.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | November 7, 2020 9:02 PM |
I've stated this in another Conners thread, but I'll say it again: I only watch this out of nostalgia for the original "Roseanne" and affection for the actors. BUT I wish this show was much better than it is.
Many of the jokes are corny and unfunny and the whole thing has a lame sitcommy feel that the original didn't have. Also, the family's economic situation seems contrived.
Sure, they wouldn't be upper-middle class, but they wouldn't be in such dire straits either - especially considering how well they were doing at the end of the original with the Lunch Box and Dan's government job.
Dan would have retired from the government gig and collected a pension; Becky would have eventually gone back to school and become a nurse or something; the military thing for DJ makes sense though.
As for R139's point, I feel like Lecy Goranson is playing Becky the way Sarah Chalke did (ditzy blonde). I prefer the original incarnation of the character who was smart, hard-working and ambitious.
The lack of continuity is really annoying too. Like someone else mentioned, it's extremely lazy. Oh well, I'm glad these actors and their crew have jobs and I get to watch familiar faces on TV on Wednesday nights. I just treat this show as a separate entity from the original.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | November 7, 2020 10:23 PM |
r32 The image that people display on talk, discussion, or reality shows is not real. It's a persona. Sometimes it reflects the actual human. Other times it doesn't. A human on one of these shows gets to decide what their persona will be. Her persona might be that she's happily married with a happy family. She can do that if she wants. It doesn't make her less authentic because "authentic" is the one thing that doesn't matter in that position. It's all persona.
For example, i like Ellen on TV. She is funny, sharp, and somewhat relatable. I know for a fact she is a legit crazy bitch in real life and I'd call her human garbage but the mental illness she grapples with is so profound, that would almost feel unfair. Still like her standup tho.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | November 7, 2020 10:33 PM |
R151, except that Dan quit his government job in the original run to go drywall a new prison.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | November 7, 2020 10:58 PM |
Andy now doesn't exist? That's ridiculous, because in the original series a big deal was made of Jackie's pregnancy. A big deal was made of Roseanne's pregnancy with Jerry Garcia. Despite having three screwed up children and never ending financial difficulties, Dan and Roseanne tried really hard to have another child in order to have a "good" one. And now Andy never existed and Jerry Garcia is exiled to a "fish boat." the writers seem really stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | November 7, 2020 11:14 PM |
Why should a 32 year old show that was OFF air for 20 years be expected have have perfect continuity? Y'all are sounding kind of shut in and dumb. What made the reboot special was that every single main cast member returned. Then Roseanne called Valerie Jarrett an ape and she was cancelled in less than a day. The current iteration is recognizable I guess. But not very good. It runs on the fumes of goodwill for the characters. Darlene is and always was a great character. Don't hate on her because she's a homely lesbian in real life. She always was. And now Darlene has a fat pig boyfriend with a gross beard. I don't see what's unreal about that? Her character is ironic and cold, controlling emotion. Both her kids characters seem likely and are played by good actors. Becky is way off, but she's older and as an actress going for a more comic twist. I kind of like her. Dan doesn't really deserve a woman as cool and attractive as Peg Bundy - but at least she's not some young bimbo. I didn't grow up on the first run of the show but probably during the first major syndication. The OG show as special. Often hilarious. It had a lot of heart and some self indulgence. The Connors is OK. Missing in heart. Mostly they are ALL just too old to still be in the same place. If it doesn't feel real, it can't have heart. And if nothing ever changes - then it's no longer a story worth telling. COVID doesn't help. The whole project is a bit misguided. But we get the feeling they like working together and the relationships between the characters AND the actors who play them is comforting at times. Jackie is way too nutty - but it really only seems that way because Roseanne is no longer there to provide the counter harmony to her performance.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | November 7, 2020 11:15 PM |
Yeah, I find it bizarre that Peg Bundy is sitting on Roseanne’s couch. I wonder how the real Roseanne feels about that.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | November 7, 2020 11:20 PM |
It's solid, but it's frustrating because it could be better and the audience has been pretty vocal about very simple ways to make it better.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | November 7, 2020 11:49 PM |
The irony is that Roseanne Barr was originally up for the role of Peg Bundy. Pn the roast of Roseanne from Comedy Central, Katey Sagal jokes that the character of Roseanne would have been an original idea if she hadn't done it a year earlier on Married With Children.
I don't really care about erasing Jerry because it doesn't have any impact in any of the characters. But Andy was such a huge part of Jackie's life, and her growing up to be an adult . Erasing him just seems so cruel . Jackie has no legacy whatsoever.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | November 8, 2020 1:17 AM |
They didn't have to bring Andy on as a character. Jackie could have said at some point that she just got done talking to Andy, and he was fine with his life in New York, or California, or whatever. That's all it would have taken.
But instead, the showrunner went out of his way to make it clear that Andy doesn't exist in this universe.
I mean, they devoted an entire episode to Ed Junior that essentially erased Crystal. Who was really on pins and needles about that one?
by Anonymous | reply 159 | November 8, 2020 1:20 AM |
The guy from The Drew Carey Show is running this, so that explains the lame jokes and sitcom-y feel. I still think it manages to be funny sometimes and I enjoy watching it. There's no comparison to the original, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | November 8, 2020 1:29 AM |
Keep seeing this thread popped up and now I'm binge watching it. I think it's the best sitcom in network tv now. But definitely not on the same level as the original, specifically its earlier seasons. This probably is better than the original's latter seasons.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | November 8, 2020 1:41 AM |
Roseanne made everyone’s life a living hell on that set, but all those fights and disagreements resulted in an excellent show. She was head of quality control and always strived to accurately reflect the lives of blue collar families and gays and lesbians even when it made her unpopular.
The show lost more than just its lead character when she left.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | November 8, 2020 6:08 PM |
The writing is sloppy. And I agree that they've gone out of their way to keep them in poverty. But the original started doing that towards the end as well.
They're trying to shoehorn Darlene and Becky into Roseanne and Jackie's roles but it's not working. Neither of them were ever really like Jackie. Both of them had Roseanne's stability and common sense. Becky just strayed when she eloped but was putting herself back together
And Jackie isn't some major screw up either. Again, another thing the original show did was turn Jackie into a neurotic, flighty person into a dysfunctional mess who can barely cope.
This really is the Archie Bunker's Place to Roseanne's All in the Family. ABP even had the same drab look that Conners has.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | November 8, 2020 6:34 PM |
I like the analogy to ABP.
I still want the show to do well and it has nothing to do with hard feelings for Roseanne and her political views. Seeing the three kids (Sara, Lecy and Michael) now grown up playing their characters as middle age parents dealing with their own shit is unique and interesting to me. I just wish the writing was tighter and that they would incorporate DJ more into the show. I did notice that Michael Fishman directed the Halloween episode.

I liked Archie Bunker's Place.
So shoot me!
by Anonymous | reply 165 | November 8, 2020 8:27 PM |
I hated "Archie Bunker's Place! After Jean Stapleton left the show, the greedy network wanted to continue AITF in some way, shape or form so they created the execrable Archie Bunker's Place. That show sucked! God, I hated "little Steffie", the obnoxious child on the show. I'm surprised it was on as long as it was. I guess fans of AITF were willing to watch even a crummy, revamped version of it. I heard Carroll O'Connor was mightily pissed that the show never got a proper finale. He wanted the show to end with Archie getting remarried. That would have been ridiculous. What woman would have wanted to marry him, except for a somewhat mentally challenged, passive dingbat like Edith, and I doubt he could find another woman like that.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | November 8, 2020 8:41 PM |
I disliked Brisbois but I enjoyed Denise Miller on ABP.
WHET Denise?
by Anonymous | reply 167 | November 8, 2020 8:52 PM |
What DID happen to Denise Miller? I stumbled upon the TV movie she made with DL fave/hottie Rex Smith, SOONER OR LATER, on YouTube, which had a profound effect on prepubescent gayling Me. Sadly, it doesn't hold up well.
But Denise had an edgy outer-borough charm and a sense of humor. (She reminded me a bit of the late Debralee Scott, who was wonderful.) She should have had a career to equal Donna Pescow's, at the very least.
Anyway, I digress.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | November 8, 2020 10:06 PM |
Denise Miller was very cute and appealing. I remember some article about her where she said she "didn't fit in" the L.A/Hollywood scene. Maybe that's why she didn't have a bigger career.
That movie "Sooner or Later" is so silly but I can understand how teenage girls would swoon over it. Miller plays Jessie; she's learning to play the guitar and is taught by an aspiring rock star named Michael, played by blonde, flowing haired Rex Smith. She's smitten with him; trouble is he's 17 and she's 13. She goes to elaborate lengths to make him think she's 16, but succeeds primarily by wearing heavy makeup. He wants to have sex with her, but she's not ready for it. She's only 13, after all. But (SPOILERS AHEAD) everything works out; she finally tells him she's 13, he gets mad and presumably dumps her, she's heartbroken, but he shows up at one of her guitar lessons to tell her that he loves her too and agrees to "take it slow." Swoooon! Every teenage girls dream, to have her true love. And he's a ROCK STAR!
There was a paperback version of "Sooner or Later." The story continued with other teen paperbacks about Jessie and Michael: "Waiting Game", "Now or Never." Seems she and Michael finally had sex, and he left her. Four years later (Jessie is in high school now) he returns, now a dissolute alcoholic trying to get clean. Jessie, of course, is there for him. Too bad Denise Miller and Rex Smith couldn't have done more tv movies continuing the story. They might have been interesting.

Why is Becky working at the factory? I thought she was part owner of the restaurant. Even if people can't eat inside they could still make money with take out and delivery or set up outdoor dining? Also, the Conner women, once the Conner girls never seem to actually be doing any real work at the factory. All they do is bullshit with each other. Why is this company keeping them when there must be so many others who want that job and will actually work. Early on they showed Roseanne kidding around but it was always made clear she was a good worker. It was only in later years that it was shown she was a horrible, lazy bitch in every job she had, including her own damn restaurant.
How could the house still not be paid off? I know they took a second mortgage for the bike shop but that went belly up almost 30 years ago. They bounced back with The Lunch Box and Dan's job with the city.
I was just going to post that. How much can such a shitty house have cost them? It should be long paid off by now. Most of my relatives with blue collar city and state jobs, especially the ones with good union jobs with great pensions, have moved on to bigger and better houses. One even bought a second home in the Hamptons! Some bought co-ops
What's Dan's excuse for never getting a good union job? The 'always downtrodden' bullshit on this show is unbearable.
The problem is, most of the writers are millionaires, they obviously don't seem to have much of a clue how the working poor and lower middle class live! Most end up with great union lifer jobs.
The Connors don't live a lifestyle of designer clothes, $500 sneakers and other useless shit, surely their house should have been paid off by now.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | November 8, 2020 11:44 PM |
How could the house not be paid off? Sitcoms have no resemblance to reality, that's why. And aside from that who would believe that a hag like Darlene would have men hitting on her? And how could Dan, who looks like death, get a much more attractive girlfriend? No, sitcoms have nothing to do with reality.

Katey Sagal was never a beauty, but she looks fantastic. Bitch is 66 years old. She's just earthy and cool enough to A L M O S T make me believe she's lowkey into Dan Conner. This show can't bare too close a scrutiny. Not because all the players are secretly rich and beautiful in real life. Some of that ain't true. It's always been a weirdly egalitarian show with a lot of backstage 'diva' antics. But Roseanne was authentic in ways that The Connors will never be. They don't have a philosophy for the characters. And without that it's way too bleak and only sporadically funny.
Look at MOM for bad optics. Allison Janney gets younger and blonder every year with stupider and dumber show constructs each week, about recovery and "empowered" women. MY mother watches it, not me. It courts reality because of its premise, but it's a totally fake ass show. Full of a bunch of old bags who would hate each other.
Who the fuck cares about why the Connors can't pay the mortgage R178? It's a non sequitur. Jumped the shark, the Conners did. Still better than most any sitcom. Sitcoms are dead. The world can handle bad logic and continuity problems better than mindless stupity right now. But people who don't think it's a Red State show are fooling themselves. The Connors wear masks against the COVID - but it's just another thing they're ugly ass couch has to deal with. The show and the characters are still silently apolitical.
Roseanne is nuts and dark sided. But the first season reboot with her was still the best presentation of reality for The Conners. This show is not authentic anymore.

I agree with R182. In the original series, Roseanne wasn't very political. In fact she seemed proud of the fact that she hated all politicians equally (regardless of party).
In a recent episode, there was some discussion about the politics attached to wearing a mask. The dialog ("Don't bother talking to people who believe that...it's like talking to a wall.") between Dan and Darlene was quite reminiscent of Archie and meathead.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | November 9, 2020 4:18 AM |
The show is so much better without sourpuss Roseanne. What is she tweeting about the election?
by Anonymous | reply 192 | November 9, 2020 4:23 AM |
Some of us ain't that old R191. Who are Archie and Meathead? And you're agreeing with your own post again. R182 is you. You do that all the time. Doesn't go unnoticed. Funny.
The mask conversation was not political. That was just common sense. The show is a red state favorite. Because the Connors are poor white trash with a few weird kids and an ugly couch. Nobody is married, but nobody is getting laid either.
Dan and Roseanne, Becky and Mark, Darlene and David and Crystal and whathisname all were having sex.
The Connors are too poor and depressed to have sex. Or even look clean. The show is regressive. Why can't Becky be in love with her Mexican lover? He's younger, sexier and better looking than any man she can ever find. Answer: The show doesn't want to piss off Magats. So they walk the line. An illegal got her pregnant and she's hiding him. Just so the baby will have a father. The show has grown very republican. Cause Becky should have aborted that kid. And then we'd have something close to what is real.
Even Dan's girlfriend is a plant. Some message that loser old men with no job or money or health can land a hot woman as long as they give her SOME freedom.
DJ, Army. PTSD. Yawn.
The show can be viewed as MAGA propaganda or trying to be the Connors within the reality of white trash poverty and that enlightenment they always had. But that can only fit with people more hungry and feisty than their sad lot. It's misguided.
Nothing like Norman Lear, except maybe the embarrassing Good Times. Long before my time.

What show is on after (or before?) The Conners? New sitcom? I'm in the mood for a new show. I like the new CBS sitcom "B Positive". I watch "Mom", "Bobs Hearts Abshiola", and "The Unicorn".

R202 for what it's worth, Roseanne was pretty and rail thin when she was younger, she didn't start gaining weight until she started having knee ds regularly in her 20s
She looks anorexic in her wedding picture to Bill Pentland
by Anonymous | reply 206 | November 10, 2020 3:14 PM |
I agree with [R182]. In the original series, Roseanne wasn't very political. In fact she seemed proud of the fact that she hated all politicians equally (regardless of party).
She was completely political in it and was a hardcore feminist. They also rooted for Democrats. You didn’t watch the show. Roseanne was a staunch anti-racist in it and pro-gay and told her daughter never to bring a Republican home.
by Anonymous | reply 207 | November 10, 2020 3:18 PM |
Roseanne was thin because she starved herself. She had a personality disorder. They do that.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | November 10, 2020 3:20 PM |
R207 to be fair, the Democratic party changed A LOT since then and a lot of Democrats became either independent or Republican
My Mom was a former Democrat, she met Bill Clinton in the 90s and still thought he was a good president to vent though she's a Republican now, and My Mom is still the same that she was in the 90s, she hasn't suddenly become anti gay or racist or even religious, she's an atheist anyway
There are different degrees of Democrats and Republicans
Funny how closed minded minded people on DL are about this

How is Roseanne still alive?
by Anonymous | reply 210 | November 10, 2020 3:25 PM |
Because over the years she has become salty. That’s what happens to people who are bitter and hateful. They become Republicunts or go far left off the rails and descend into AOC territory. They are all assholes. That’s why so many of Obama’s Hollywood supporters were disappointed in him by his second term. They were crunchy that he didn’t go off the rails into Marxism.

Some of the scenes about Covid this season felt like forced propaganda. Just the style. Like the convo between Dan & Mark in the living room. It was very "Afterschool Special".
Some scenes were good teaching moments though, like the scene with Darlene talking to Mary on the roof. It was a great example for any adult who is feeling that same way about a young relative who they think might be struggling. What her & Becky did afterward though was unconscionable, going behind DJs back. Who wrote that plotline? Was it just so Michael Fishman could have a dramatic moment?
For those bashing Mark, I disagree and think he's one of the better-written gay characters on tv. Remarkably confident and self-aware. Also appreciate how much Darlene has supported & stood up for him. The actor playing him is great.
by Anonymous | reply 212 | November 10, 2020 5:31 PM |
I love Mark and the young actor playing him as well, R212. There's a lot of hate here for his character, who is non-binary but shows more and more signs of just being a young gay man. The show (briefly) gave him a love interest, and doesn't dial back on his femme qualities. (They've also made a joke about him being the OCD/law-and-order gatekeeper in the household.)
There are few portrayals of gay youth that will satisfy everyone here on DL (eg, they're not hot enough, too femme, etc.) And then there are those who are simply predisposed someone who is young, openly gay, and completely unapologetic about it.

I'm thinking the same, many posting in this thread did not watch this series when it first came on or they sure didn't watch the repeats. These posters claiming the show wasn't political, either weren't born or were way too young to understand the show.
During the last years of the series, I worked with a wealthy young woman who said to me, "WHO lives like that family?" I had to inform Miss Park Avenue, "Working class people in the Mid-West that's who. Then again, it's a comedy. In real life those people wouldn't be so happy and resigned with their lot in life. They were almost too happy to be poor and always struggling. At least they owned a home. In an East Coast city, a family of five like the Conners couldn't afford to own anything, let alone a home. Maybe they could afford a used car!"
Roseanne's character was definitely a feminist and a Democrat. The problems started, when she brought her worsening mental illness and change in politics into the series, that was her downfall.
Money does change everything, that must have also contributed to Roseanne becoming a ReThug.

I was watching season 10 last night on Peacock and it is better than I remember it being. Roseanne and Lacey Goranson in particular are rusty, but the writing is pretty sharp, and it's funny. It feels like the original series.
Watching encapsulated everything that's wrong with The Connors.
One particular: in season 10, Darlene and Becky snip at each other like they do in the original series. Becky calls Darlene unppealing and Morticia, while Darlene calls Becky an old whore. I didn't even realize that The Conners doesn't do those kind of jokes anymore, especially not at Darlene's expense. I guess when you're the producer of the show, you can get away with nixing those jokes.

Season 10 of Roseanne is on Peacock. I just rewatched it. It's actually a lot better than I remember it being. A few episodes are cringy because of the politics, but it pretty accurately grabs the spirit of the original. I remember thinking that Roseanne's acting was awful in the reboot, and it was, but she got pretty decent by the end of the run. Lacey was way better in the reboot than she is on The Conners.

I just happened to be changing the channel last night and passed by COZI-TV. "Roseanne" was on and it was the first episode of season 10 (from 2018). So for anyone interested in seeing Roseanne's one and only reboot season before she got canned, they should check out COZI right now.
by Anonymous | reply 270 | December 8, 2020 2:25 AM |
R270: I watched that last night too. They played the last episode of the original series which was really good, and the first episode of the reboot, which was also good.

I watch Rosanne on CMT from 9 - 11 am each weekday and on COZI-TV at night from 9-11 pm ET. They also show the old seasons on TVLand on Saturday mornings. Right now I'm watching the episode where Dan tells Rosanne about his mother's nurse in CA.
by Anonymous | reply 272 | December 8, 2020 2:22 PM |
R266, Dean the character. The epilogue of his episode had him pleading with the audience to have Dean continue to appear on the show. Then they faded to black and chyroned Dean 1992-1992.
by Anonymous | reply 273 | December 8, 2020 3:11 PM |
Right now, the most interesting character on the show is Dan's girlfriend. She's an independent, artistic woman (played by Katey Sagal) with no kids, who enjoys living alone. (She's like a healthy version of what Jackie could have been.) She sleeps over at Dan's house now and then, but prefers to stay at her own quiet house. (Who would want to give up their quiet space to stay in Dan's crowded madhouse?) Dan, on the other hand, seems to want to shack up right away; he's a bit needy.
The most ridiculous storyline involves broke, 43-year-old Darlene who can barely afford to contribute to food and rent for her two kids, but who's shelling out $$$ to a fertility doctor so that she can have another baby. (Again, she can't afford to take care of the two kids that she has, her broke boyfriend lives in her father's house with her, and there's no end in sight to their bad luck. And she's 43.)
by Anonymous | reply 274 | December 8, 2020 3:36 PM |
I love your post, R274. Everything you said about Sagal's character is spot-on (particularly the comment about her being the "healthy" version of Jackie) and you're so right that it makes ZERO sense for Darlene to even be thinking about having another child right now.
by Anonymous | reply 275 | December 8, 2020 6:51 PM |
Katey Sagal is a great replacement for Roseanne.
by Anonymous | reply 276 | December 8, 2020 6:54 PM |
I wish Jackie would have been allowed to be the healthy version of Jackie, though.
I think Jackie's life would change after Roseanne's death, because while she loved her sister, Roseanne took up a lot of the oxygen in the room, and it would have been something for her to discover who she was without Roseanne around (and with less Bev).
by Anonymous | reply 277 | December 8, 2020 7:05 PM |
Unfortunately Roseanne is even crazier now than when she got fired.
And there’s people in here who criticized the decision. Imagine if ABC had to keep putting out weekly press releases disavowing all the wacky shit she keeps saying. If she was still on the show, she’d be even more apt to spout radical nonsense due to the increased attention and controversy from being the star of a hit show (which she reveled in). Imagine she spent the entire election making headlines for the way she trashed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris with personal attacks, calling the Coronavirus a hoax, etc. Ramping up the hate with every Tweet to ensure the media covers her words. Now tell me ABC didn’t make the right move to excise her like the fucking deplorable tumor that she is.

And given Roseanne’s twitter history prior to the reboot, I can’t imagine she wasn’t told one strike and she’s done. I’ve said the first season of the reboot set her up to be killed off at a moment’s notice if necessary. I think Roseanne herself was just too stupid to realize that.

Well, Becky got pregnant in the reboot, after she tried to be a surrogate in her 40s, and the doctor told her that her eggs were too old. It's a little too early to be jumping the shark...TWICE. But I think Darlene will probably have a similar miracle. Then they'll continue to bitch about how poor they are and how they don't have enough money or time to take care of their kids.
If this show wants to have babies so bad, then they should have written a pregnancy around Darlene's daughter (repeating the cycle) or Jackie's son, or Dan's son Jerry.
by Anonymous | reply 288 | December 9, 2020 1:42 AM |
The show is now family-oriented. A Married with Children Netflix reboot would be better and way funnier. Roseanne was the show, for sure. That being said, Roseanne thought that as long as she brought in the ratings the suits would look the other way. She didn’t realize that we live in a much more diverse world now. ABC repeatedly told her to cool it and she went and pulled the same shit over and over and over again. The woman has always self-sabotaged and then played the victim. Then when she blamed it on Ativan she became a laughing stock. She’s another uneducated idiot who hitched her wagon to Trump. Bad idea. She’s gone down with the ship. Roseanne hasn’t had any understanding of the working class in 40 years. She’s rich and has been for decades.

R306 Is DJ handicapped or slow in some way? I’m not being cruel it just makes sense. He can do little pieces here or there but not perform like other professional actors? I mean... Lecy Goranson may not be good (or some say she is, idk) but her intelligence is there and she can perform significant scenes episode after episode. Is DJ more than just a bad actor?
by Anonymous | reply 307 | December 10, 2020 5:50 AM |
I agree that Michael Fishman may have cognitive issues, or something similar. Something may be... off.
He was pretty irritating (and/or merely dull) as a small kid. As an adult, he's generally hopeless as an actor (though he did have a touching scene a few weeks back about not being around for his daughter--he was actually good). I always assume Sarah Gilbert and the powers that be keep him signed on out of loyalty, not because he brings that much to the table. I don't think the actress playing his wife (mostly absent this season) is a good actor, either. The little girl is cute, at least.
by Anonymous | reply 308 | December 10, 2020 6:09 AM |
DJ was always a space cadet -- if the show had been written a few years later, he would have been borderline on the spectrum. The fact that he's the most successful of the three siblings is a testament as to how much Darlene and Becky screwed up their lives.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | December 10, 2020 6:30 AM |
How can the show exist without her? Isn’t that like I Love Lucy with just Fred, Ethel and Ricky?
R305, Goodman, Metcalf, and Katey Sagal make up for her absence, IMO. There is a lot more focus on Darlene and Becky, which I don't mind, but other people's opinions vary on that.
by Anonymous | reply 310 | December 10, 2020 2:58 PM |
I would like to see more of DJ. I think his storyline is interesting (vet with PTSD, wife still in military abroad). In true Roseanne fashion, his wife should fall in love with a fellow serviceperson and leave him. I don't know why they don't use him more; he's a good enough actor, as proved in his big scenes the other week where his family took his daughter to the Conners home.
I guess his character lives in another city, but why not have him live nearby in Lanford? Then, he'd have as much reason to be in the house as Jackie. He could regularly visit to help Dan with home repairs. Maybe the actor only wanted to work part time? It's weird how they moved DJ's kid to the Conner house to use her in more story lines, but not the DJ character.
t's weird how they moved DJ's kid to the Conner house to use her in more story lines,
The little girl is better at acting than DJ. That said, I'm glad they brought DJ back (bad actor or not) and they're giving him some work.

Michael Fishman (DJ) directed a couple of episodes, maybe they're grooming him for that. The actress that plays his wife is on the CBS show The Unicorn. She said on ET The Conners might have her back. DJs daughter and Darlene's son Mark have great chemistry.

I hate how, in the show, people wear masks but immediately lower them to talk to each other, notably in their workplace with people around. I understand it's a tv show where you need to see people's faces but it's just dumb and irresponsible.

I’m not stating my boundaries, R298, I’m saying why bitch about a show, especially if you’ve admittedly never watched the original? I find The Conners a little sad without the character Roseanne, but I know the actress Roseanne fucked herself over, and now she’s worm food as far as The Conners is concerned. And some people enjoy the show just as much without her.

I mostly agree, R322.
Considering that Lecey Goranson (allegedly) spent 2 decades after ROSEANNE living off her residuals in Brooklyn and doing hole-in-the wall theatre no one came to see, I'd say she's awfully lucky.

I think Lecy Goranson is giving a wonderful performance as Becky and one that I was completely NOT expecting. In fact, I think it's a shame that she's not getting more recognition for it. A nomination for supporting actress in a comedy series at the next Emmys would be well-deserved in my opinion.

R325, I wonder if Goodman has financial problems stemming back from his booze and coke days.
He's done a LOT more film and commercial work (incl a lot of voiceover work) than any other current member of the cast. He should be sitting on a fortune at age 68... but I suspect he's not.
No excuse for low-rent and sleazy, anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | December 13, 2020 3:05 PM |
I watched a few episodes of classic Roseanne on TVLand yesterday, and I thought that Lecy was a great child actor.
Becky was the popular, outgoing perfectionist. Her life seemed easy and perfect compared to Darlenes, but she still went through the angst and tension of adolescence. This show gave the female child characters so much depth compared to other sitcoms of the time.

Why do you suspect that, R329?
by Anonymous | reply 331 | December 14, 2020 2:24 PM |
Mostly because Goodman's now doing endorsements for sketchy stuff like R325 at 68. And with an Emmy and a Golden Globe and a lot of noms under his belt.
Some actors like to work all the time, but with Goodman's level of fame (and his age), he shouldn't have to be doing V/O work for video games and sketchy TV ads. It's not a good look.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | December 14, 2020 3:51 PM |
R332 - I have also noticed Goodman’s questionable choices regarding work. At this point he should have been set for life financially. I suspect he has a nasty gambling problem. He seems like the type with major issues.

A few years ago, before the reboot, Roseanne was feuding with Goodman because he had suddenly become good buddies with Tom Arnold. She accused him of using cocaine on the set in the 80s/90s. There were a lot of times on the show, where he seemed to be ad libbing with a funny voice and facial expression (a la Robin Williams).

There were definitely instances in the original Roseanne where Goodman looked manic, fidgety, and sweaty. Dangerous game for a man of his size back then.
by Anonymous | reply 337 | December 17, 2020 2:19 AM |
There's no question in my mind that Goodman was still using alcohol and coke in the early seasons of the show.
The reference to Robin Williams is apt. Children, if you want to see what cocaine looks like, look no further than MORK AND MINDY or Williams late night appearances on talk shows from that era.

Lecy Goranson is nominated for the Critics Choice Award! I choose to believe that she is a really unique comic actress. If she's just bad, she's still funny. Ha. But if you look at the long arc of her time playing Becky, I think her grown woman performance is one fully articulated and oddly affecting. She's a bit fascinating as an actress. Regardless, she deserves an Emmy nod too and give her the damn Golden Globe. Roseanne was never a popular show with awards and The Conners won't be either. In Lecy's case, the nomination is actually an honor. Come on SAG awards - you're the body unafraid to give a statue to the actual best performance. Trends can fuck right off.

Jackie was a police officer for a short time. Most police officers are given the option to retire after 20 years of service with a pension equivalent to 50% or more of their salary. That being said, 50% of a police offer's salary isn't that much. Living on a police pension isn't a guarantee of wealth.

Who said anything about wealth, how about these people are still not struggling, like every character on this series is depicted? Even Darlene's BF lost his business? C'mon!
Not sure where you live, NYPD retired cops and FDNY firemen get excellent pensions. A friend's husband, a retired fire captain, or chief, gets a $145,000 a year tax free pension. Not bad at all. A retired cop I know, a woman from my neighborhood, must receive a very decent pension. Every time I bump into her, she's always showing me photos from her latest trip, not now during Covid, but she was always traveling. This woman is single, she has a co-op mortgage. She must be getting a a very decent pension. The average NYPD pension amount is $80,000.
Most NY city and state union jobs pensions are based on their last few years of working, that's when workers make sure to put in many extra hours of overtime. I'd hardly call any of these people poor or working class.
My point was not about Jackie acquiring wealth via a big pension, my point was, she could have retired in 20 years, collected a pension and taken another job. Instead, after all these years, pretty much everyone in this series, is still at the bottom of the economic ladder. They are always complaining about how poor they are. It's ridiculous and tedious. Being poor isn't funny.
Dan still being poor is the most shocking aspect of this series. Dan has many skills. IIRC, he had a home repair business and actually had a small staff, he also had a decent union job and he was also a mechanic. Dan has marketable skills, it's not as if he's been a cashier his entire working life. Again, this show is absolutely ridiculous. I won't even get into his home still not being paid for.
Re firefighters: "After five years, a Firefighter can make more than $100,000, including overtime and holiday pay."
As of 2019: "The 471 Fire Department of New York (FDNY) officers and firefighters who retired in calendar year 2018 are eligible for average pensions of $129,259, according to data posted today at SeeThroughNY.net, the Empire Center's transparency website."

The Conners are poor, yet Jackie's mom seems to have a lot of money. Can someone please explain this? Over the years, the Conners were always trying to con the mother out of money.
Were Jackie's parents professionals or were they simply good at investing. Was it ever explained why the mother has a lot of money?
I remember on an old episode, Roseanne and Jackie went to see their old family home, it was up for sale. The house wasn't anything special.
She got a lot of money from the divorce and judging from her wardrobe she was a frugal spender. Just Chardonnay and the occasional beret.
A divorce from Jackie's father or another man? Since when did the grandparents have money?
If the money was from Jackie's father, exactly how did the father accumulate wealth? There was never a mention of of this in the series. It was assumed everyone in the family was working class and remained so. Dan's father seemed to be some sort of traveling salesman.
The grandmother Bev always seems to be throwing money around. Just recently, wasn't she going to pay the dance school tuition for Darlene's son?
We aren't talking about a grandparent who gives a grandkid the occasional $10 or $20. Bev's money situation is presented as if she's wealthy and the struggling Conners are always trying to get at her wealth.
In the past, Bev already gave Roseanne and Jackie money towards opening their small diner. Bev was technically a partner, she worked there for awhile, then was fired. I don't remember if they paid Bev back her investment.
by Anonymous | reply 366 | January 21, 2021 7:01 PM |
R366 - there were plenty of references to Roseanne’s parents having money, but not that they were wealthy. Bev gave Jackie and Roseanne money, which they used to buy the Lunch Box, and then she invested more as a partner. After divorcing Al, they mentioned how she got money in the divorce. But again, it was never implied that she was wealthy, maybe more that she didn’t need to worry.
by Anonymous | reply 367 | January 21, 2021 9:12 PM |
R366, Roseanne and Jackie told Bev they wanted her to be a silent partner who would stay away from the diner. In revenge, Bev sold her share of the diner to Leon.
by Anonymous | reply 368 | January 21, 2021 9:34 PM |
OK fine R367. Since Roseanne and Jackie's parents appeared to financially comfortable, if not actually wealthy, I guess they didn't pass on their financial savvy to both Roseanne and Jackie? That's my main point. Both Roseanne and Jackie were working in that horrible plastics factory. Was that really the best they could do?
Another point, most blue collar union jobs do pay well and as Dan is a skilled blue collar worker, the man should not still be poor at his advanced age.
This series in an insult to people which functioning brains. At least Darlene's son recently had a good line. As he was trying to study, but was interrupted by the family's usual daily self-created chaos, the kid said, "I'm studying so I don't have to be 40 and still be living at home."
Roseanne and Jackie told Bev they wanted her to be a silent partner who would stay away from the diner. In revenge, Bev sold her share of the diner to Leon.
That plotline was done away with for the reboot. Beverly still had her share of the diner, and appointed Darlene as her executor of her estate. Thus why Jackie and Becky were feuding with Darlene last season, which culminated in that awesome bitch slap at Thanksgiving.
by Anonymous | reply 370 | January 21, 2021 9:48 PM |
R370, I thought that, at the time of the reboot, the Lunchbox diner had been closed for years. Wasn't it then a Mexican restaurant where Becky worked? Jackie and Becky wanted to buy back the Mexican restaurant and turn it back into the Lunchbox. They went to Bev for money, but Bev had given Darlene power of attorney, and Darlene initially said no.
by Anonymous | reply 371 | January 21, 2021 10:02 PM |
No, R371. The Mexican diner was different. The Lunch Box had been a Chinese restaurant. It was revealed that Bev still owned it and was leasing it out.

Just stop. Of course, the entire cast, except for the youngest and newest cast members, are certainly millionaires.
I would assume the actress Emma Kenney, who portray's Darlene's daughter is actually a millionaire. Emma has been on Showtime's 'Shameless' for years. She's been acting since she was 4.
I just looked up Emma's net worth, yes, she's a millionaire, her net worth is $4 million. Johnny Galecki is worth is $100 million. John Goodman is worth $65 million.
Johnny was on 'Roseanne' for YEARS. He was a former cast member, again, not the point when he was a regular cast member on the original series, this series features almost all of the original cast members. Johnny is likely the wealthiest of all the cast members or at least one of them.
Why are people at DL so anal and such control freaks? I reckon many people in the thread probably didn't watch the entire original series.
How can anyone assume this series performers are not millionaires?

Oh, it's like winning the lottery!!! Uh, oh. The show is tired, the cast is tired. Being generationally poor for thirty years is a tired concept. Collect welfare bitches. I'm tired of your couch and unpainted kitchen cupboards and the plaid shirts and whole nonsense of it all. Roseanne was nothing like that. She and Dan were ironic and real about their struggles and aspirations. They wanted and worked for better for their kids. Darlene was the last person who would end up living at home. The way they use masks in the show is weirdly symbolic of what else is wrong. They walk into the scene or the job or the argument with a mask on - then remove it to have their drama and laughs. The show is getting kind of distasteful. It's not a celebration of the working poor. It's a flaunting of it by rich homely actors. All in The Family was that, Good Times was that, and the original Roseanne was more than that. Roseanne was the sophisticated one, smart and thoughtful. Funny. Jackie was the sister always in man trouble and constant conflict with life. Becky wasn't stupid. Darlene wasn't weak. Dan wasn't such a fucking MAGA cow. And a woman like Katey Sagal would never get in bed with who he has become.
The show is kind of poor people porn now. You always knew that Roseanne was a progressive show making commentary and points, while portraying close to real people. Witty, off the rails. Sometimes exploitive of Barr's whims. But ultimately grounded in both liberal and aspirational values of working class people NEAR CHICAGO!! Yeah they liked beer, but they wanted more.
The Connors straddles every issue but leans heavily into celebrating poverty and losers. It's not at all political, except in a disturbingly conservative way. It implies this is all they deserve and get and there's nothing more to come but old age and debt and illness and bills and more children no one can afford..... IN the meantime - observe how shitty they all look! It's a play, not a sitcom.
Johnny was on 'Roseanne' for YEARS. He was a former cast member, again, not the point when he was a regular cast member on the original series, this series features almost all of the original cast members. Johnny is likely the wealthiest of all the cast members or at least one of them.
The point was, he’s not a cast member of the new series, though he has been on it a few times.

R380, you pretty much described the series brilliantly.
Roseanne, the comedian, always came across as fairly liberal and so did her character. When the series returned, she was full on bat-shit MAGA crazy and basically brought her horrible ReThug politics into the series. That was her downfall. I thought I was watching that ReThug nutcase Tim Allen's series, where every other 'joke' was a put down of Dems, unions and Obama.
It was unfortunate Roseanne was not able to separate herself from her character. Which was likely a huge problem, especially as Roseanne was never a trained actress, she was essentially playing a version of herself.
I realize this comparison is odd, I also feel this way about Lens Dunham. As her character Hannah Horvath on GIRLS, Lens basically played a version of herself, an entitled tone-deaf spoiled hipster. Hannah was so loathsome and unlikeable. Had Lens hired an actual actress to portray Hannah, perhaps she wouldn't have been constantly trashed.
I don't think Johnny Galecki being worth a hundred million dollars is an "actual fact." Oh, he's well off, but a hundred million? Sounds like bullshit to me.
He starred for 12 years on a sitcom that for much of its run was the top comedy series on the air and runs constantly in syndication, and by the eighth season he was making a million dollars an episode* plus had a piece of the show’s profits, which would be huge. Even the residuals would be huge. He probably has more than a hundred million.
*for the last couple of seasons he and the other leads gave up a hundred grand per show to raise the salaries of Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch.
by Anonymous | reply 390 | January 21, 2021 11:51 PM |
btw, Johnny Galecki sure is extremely wealthy. I guess many were unaware how much The Big Bang Theory cast were making?
"Parsons, Galecki, Nayyar, and Helberg were the top four biggest earners on Forbes' list of the highest-paid TV actors of 2018. Parsons topped the list with $26.5 million in pretax from June 1, 2017 to June 1, 2018. Cuoco was Forbes' second-highest-paid TV actress of 2018 with $24.5 million in the same time period."
"The Big Bang Theory" ends its record-breaking 12-season run on Thursday, and the actors were some of the highest paid on television."
"Actor Jim Parsons made headlines last summer for walking away from a reported two-year $50 million paycheck for two more seasons of the sitcom. That included $1 million an episode plus profits. CBS then announced the show would end with its 12th season, which premiered in September."
"In 2017, Variety reported that the show's five original cast members — Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Kunal Nayyar and Simon Helberg — agreed to take $100,000 pay cuts in order to help costars Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik earn more. The two were making $200,000 an episode compared to the $1 million the original five were making."
With those kinds of salaries, $1 million for ONE Big Bang Theory episode, it's not hard to believe Johnny is very rich. So is Norman Reedus, of all people. "There are other TV stars whose salaries are on par with the "Big Bang Theory" actors, including Norman Reedus, who is making $1 million an episode for "The Walking Dead".

I started watching this show when it first came on as I was a fan of the original. It really, really sucks now that Roseanne is gone. I cannot stand it now. It's far too preachy and it's just trying way too hard. The episode with the Transwoman was it for me. It was so obvious and heavy handed. Like anyone at that factory couldn't tell she was a he. Jesus.
Although I do agree that Lecy Goranson has been surprisingly funny since the reboot began. But even Metcalf is playing Jackie differently...she was always a bit crazy but never over the top like she is now. I'm embarrassed for them all and I'm pretty sure I'll be deleting it off my Tivo lists.

I think they are making the show mostly about the adults now, they don't show Mark as much as they used to either. They all but scrubbed Mark being gay as well, and he stopped wearing dresses too.

I think Mark’s time is limited because of covid rules. I thought I had read that. Michael Fishman is dealing with the death of some young person in his life, which is supposedly why he’s not on much this year. I don’t doubt with covid rules on set they have to make choices about who they can focus storylines on.

It's 7 at this point. Darlene & Ben in DJs old room, Darlene's 2 kids in Darlene & Becky's old room, Dan in the main floor bedroom, and Becky & her baby in the basement.
Anyone else surprised at how they suddenly installed a full bathroom in the basement? Becky just announced it a while back. That's a lot of work.

Dan is a contractor. But they've never painted the place, changed the wallpaper, upgraded the kitchen, rearranged the furniture, got new curtains or steam cleaned that couch? Usually this kind of stuff doesn't bother me about a TV show, but there's something arrogant about the fact that we can smell the Conner house through the damn TV. Archie and Edith never upgraded anything either, but you know that house was CLEAN!!! And the wood was real and oiled. And the sheets and spreads were nice enough. And Edith had some better dishes and a good tablecloth. JEEZ.

by Anonymous | reply 408 | January 24, 2021 5:43 AM |
That's what I was thinking, too, R408. As I recall, that was the whole purpose of that dramatic scene with DJ the last time he was on because they were telling him the girl should come live with them because of his work schedule.
Speaking of that, I actually think it would be interesting to see DJ's daughter go live with Jackie, which would give them an opening in which to show Jackie in a more maternal role (plus give Metcalf something a little more substantial to do on the show).

I was so excited about the reboot. In the show's original run, Roseanne had been so progressive, and she tackled topics like feminism, homosexuality, and racism. She did it in a way that was, first and foremost funny, but with heart and never preachy.
She seems to have been radicalized over the past few decades. I was shocked and frustrated when, in the first episode of the reboot, her character enthusiastically exclaimed, "Thank God for Donald Trump!". She gleefully said that she had worked it out in her contract that her character would say that.
Early in the reboot, Darlene joked about how college marketing materials always have photographs that include a diverse looking group of people. Well, the reboot does the same thing. The show has paraded very different people onscreen, seemingly only for the purpose of educating viewers instead of entertaining them. First there's the transgender grandchild and the mixed-race grandchild. Then, there were the Islamic neighbors. And the lesbian couple who were going to adopt Becky's baby before she changed her mind and decided to keep it herself. (It seems like this was a temporary filler storyline just to bring a lesbian couple onscreen for two episodes; one of the lesbians was played by a writer on the show.) Then there was Becky's illegal immigrant baby daddy and the trans boss at the factory. Lanford sure got diverse over the past 20 years.
The show's liberal viewers are already empathetic towards different types of people. The conservative viewers, who could have actually benefitted from this education, stopped watching when Roseanne was fired. So, stop trying to educate us, and just be funny. The original show was able to have gay characters (Leon, his partner, and Nancy) and black characters without it feeling so contrived.
by Anonymous | reply 413 | January 24, 2021 9:07 PM |
I'm probably in the minority, but the episode in the original series where DJ has to kiss the black girl in the school play is one of my least favorites. I thought it was way too preachy and downright unrealistic in parts. No teacher would have mouthed off to a parent the way DJ's did to Roseanne, they would have lost their job. And having everyone sit around and give big speeches wore thin after about ten minutes. I felt it tried way too hard to make its point.
The original Roseanne definitely got preachy in its later seasons as it tried to be profound with a capital P. There was an abortion episode that came a short time after the racism episode that was just bizarre, with Roseanne acting like everyone was conspiring against her to get an abortion. It was clearly an excuse for her to talk about how women should have the right to make their own decisions, but the dynamic between the characters was completely off, and she was horrible to Dan for no real reason.

by Anonymous | reply 415 | January 24, 2021 11:21 PM |
R414: supposedly the girl DJ didn't want to kiss was the girl he married. I liked the racism episode because it wasn't afraid to show how two faced the main characters were. Roseanne was only concerned about how being accused of being a racist made her look bad and reflected on her as a parent. And although it may seem ridiculous that in the reboot all of these social changes occur in one family, they are happening in small town America.

Oooh, yep. I bet Dan gets it and ends up on a ventilator. But of course, he will survive only to get hit with a $50,000 hospital bill after.
I never minded the whole "poverty is here to stay" dynamic of the show because it's pretty true for most Americans. My step mom, her family are all a bunch of loser poor folks who just keep popping out babies. We are talking 14 year olds getting pregnant and keeping it, only to end up with 5 more. It's a cycle that none of them want or are willing to do the work to get out of. I might have been in the same boat had I not decided to go to college. I know a lot of people who live like the Connors, paycheck to paycheck and just barely scraping by. The great thing about Roseanne was it showed that even in situations like that, there was love and humor...but it would have been better for the reboot to have shown that one of them had gone off and made something of themselves. I would have liked to have seen Darlene be a successful writer and be the one that everyone asked for money. You don't quite know what it's like having your own parents ask you for money until it happens to you (has to me). My parents never helped me out financially and so, when they ask to borrow money, it's always a hard no. It would be different if I didn't know they were constantly at casinos and horse tracks betting away their money. Such is life.

How about Ben shaves the beard off altogether? He looked like the Wolfman! If the lack of access to a barber was the excuse, explain why Dan's hair wasn't bushy and wild due to not getting a haircut? Poor writing.

I really enjoyed Lecy Goranson's performance in this last episode. That scene at the restaurant when she's lying to her high school classmate about how successful her life is and how much she's accomplished was really poignant. You could see the feelings of regret and "what ifs" in Becky's face and hear it in her voice. Lecy really knocked that scene out of the park. I also liked how the show finally acknowledged that Becky was a stellar student with a lot of promise back in the day. It seems like she's constantly portrayed as a ditzy blond these days so I appreciated that nod to her history from the original show.

Were these the "let's try to win an Emmy" episodes? The melodrama was over the top. Becky's "hangover" makeup was a bit much but Laurie Metcalf is an acting beast. Metcalfe can be very good sometimes as she was in the first 3 seasons of Roseanne but then she was blach after that. I never cared for her in the later seasons of Roseanne and in the reboot of Roseanne she has just been mostly terrible. That's why the Molly character is better than all of them combined. She actually has a real humanity/relatable character to her that none of the others have.

Aunt Jackie was very good in laying down the law and using her old cop training to put her niece in a hold so that Becky couldn’t make a drunken escape. I agree there is too much melodrama. Every episode now seems like a public service announcement. The characters keep suffering shockingly low moments; this is more depressing than Good Times.
In a recent interview, Lecy Goranson (Becky) acknowledged that Becky's pregnancy roller coaster storyline in Seasons 1 and 2 was insensitive to people coping with infertility. (Becky, in her 40s, wanted to be a surrogate, found out her eggs were not viable, got depressed, then accidentally got knocked up in a one-night stand.) Perhaps some people wrote to the show to express their disappointment, because it seems like the show tried to make up for it with an opposite storyline where Darlene (out of the blue, and in her 40s) decided she wanted to have a baby with Ben (even though neither of them had a stable income, lived in Darlene's dad's house, Darlene could barely financially support the two kids she already had, and never would have been able to afford fertility treatment). After some fertility testing, Darlene realized she couldn't have kids, and she was very sad.

Please, that cheap house should have been paid for many times over. There is no logical reason a cheap house, in a flyover state no less, still has a mortgage.
IIRC, at one point, Dan had decent well paying union job. Besides, if Dan and Roseanne couldn't pay off their mortgage, why the hell was Roseanne wasting money opening up a diner?! Even if Bev gave them some money, it could have been used to pay off the mortgage, not open the diner.
What awful writing! There's nothing worse than wealthy Hollywood writers trying to write about the working poor.
by Anonymous | reply 465 | April 8, 2021 3:38 PM |
The original show ruined the character of Jackie. In the first few years of "Roseanne", the Jackie character was fascinating. She was insecure in her romantic relationships and in her career (jumping from being a cop to a truck driver). She was is a codependent relationship with Roseanne, and she was always trying to get out of Roseanne's shadow, but she seemed to be stuck in life.
Then the show turned her into Barney Fife, and made her get knocked up. At least she had the gumption to dump Fred, who was boring as fuck, instead of continuing to live with him due to societal pressure. I wish they would have given her some hobbies, maybe made her a artist, made her more confident and fulfilled with her life over time. But she's still a basket case. They're wasting Laurie Metcalf's talent; she could do so much more.

Last night, at a few points, I thought that Darlene was going to kiss Molly and wake up to her latent lesbianism.
But then, I felt the same during their scenes together in the early 1990s.
by Anonymous | reply 473 | April 8, 2021 5:33 PM |
I agree with everyone else - the writing can be really sloppy at times and the plotlines have more holes than swiss cheese. Another pesky frustration is the lack of continuity with the original. There was never a Mrs. Tilden living next door. Molly and her sister Charlotte were raised by their single Dad Ty Tilden, so that woman who answered the door was random. Speaking of Charlotte, why no mention of her? Also, didn't the Tildens move away in the original? My trivia for OG Roseanne gets hazy after season 6, but I thought the Tildens ended up moving after the Dad got another job out of state.

I think there should be something in between the fantastical lottery winning season 10 and the total "down and out and then more down and out" mode that the family is currently in. Give them at least a little happiness, sometimes.

Rosanne would never admit it, but the show was much better during the Tom Arnold years.
Also, they should’ve kept the bowmans as next door neighbors instead of having them move and the tildens move in. Kathy bowman was a perfect foil for Roseanne.
by Anonymous | reply 478 | April 9, 2021 1:39 AM |
Agree R478, the Tom Arnold years were the best of the show.
Why was Ben pressuring Darlene to refund plane tickets for cash? Most plane tickets aren't refundable and even if they were, the money would go back to Molly's credit card and cash for them to pay bills.

I keep watching because the original is still my favorite TV show ever, but holy fuck, the show is depressing as shit.
It's not funny, it feels claustrophobic, it's corny, and the acting is shit. I can't decide who is worse. For me, it's a race between Lacey, and Darlene's two kids. Lacey reads all of her lines exactly the same, and it is annoying as fuck.
I really wish they would just cancel it so I don't have to watch it anymore.

Same R485. I'm all for a revival of one of my favorite shows as long as it's done well and with respect for the original audience. With The Conners, the writers are so lazy and incompetent with no regard for character history. I find that more annoying than the questionable acting from the cast.

R490 - true, they’re not real life, but they should be rooted in some reality. Otherwise, it goes beyond lazy writing and just becomes insulting, particularly for a show trying to “be real”. And the old Roseanne managed to find the humor in being poor, which made it comedic. The Conners is just depressing and hits you over the head with their misery.

Roseanne only had a few brief seasons of so-called "quality." The show hadn't found its groove yet in the in the original seasons. There were two, maybe three good seasons in the early '90s before Roseanne started demanding more creative control, and the late seasons started following the ridiculous trajectory of Roseanne's tabloid life.
The retards who think this show is suffering from Roseanne's absence forget just how badly Roseanne fucked up her own show.
by Anonymous | reply 498 | April 10, 2021 7:03 AM |
The first three seasons were the best. Season one was mostly perfect once Roseanne got control. Four and Five were still good but not perfect.

It's pretty ridiculous the way the show continually skates around Jackies past. Molly asked Jackie if she was married and instead of saying "divorced" she said not married....I liked Jackie as a Mom and the show won't even acknowledge some of Laurie Metcalfs best work in the original series..
by Anonymous | reply 500 | April 10, 2021 8:54 AM |
I agree that the first three seasons were the best. Seasons 4 and 5 was self-indulgent, because Roseanne was obviously forcing in storylines that she thought were hilarious but weren't: trip to Vegas, her lesbian kiss with Morgan Fairchild. But there were still a few electrifying episodes: (season 4): Dan loses his bike shop and Becky runs away to elope with Mark; and (season 5): it's revealed that Jackie is a victim of domestic violence.
After that, the show got worse and worse. Suddenly everyone is pregnant: Roseanne, Jackie, Darlene. Darlene becomes more and more unlikeable as a grungy/goth type, who borderline verbally abuses David and exclaims in almost every episode: "I can't wait to get out of this town".
Looking back at the show, Darlene was a fascinating character, starting with poem episode. She was a shy tomboy who struggled to fit in, and she adopted the sarcastic persona to repress her feelings. Several times, it was mentioned that she pushed away people who loved her, including her family and David. She appeared to have some type of social anxiety, and it would have made perfect sense for her to be gay in the reboot. It would have explained EVERYTHING in the original series.

This is when they also started focusing WAY too much on the David character as well.

R481 I wonder if Danielle Harris got fed up with Roseanne's antics on the original show. Years ago, a blogger who worked as a stand in on Roseanne wrote about her experiences on the show. She said Roseanne was difficult and rude on the set. The blogger was first hired to stand in for Danielle Harris and then started doing stand in work for other cast members and sometimes acted as a dialogue coach to Laurie Metcalfe. The blogger didn't speak well of John Goodman and and mentioned he showed up drunk to work several times.
JEEZ.
This kind of bothers me too. I loved the original show as I was able to relate to it as I grew up in a family who had some financial struggles as my dad had been laid off from his job and there were a few years in which money was tight. When things got comfortable my parents slowly started to replace things around the house that weren't going to last much longer or things they just wanted to replace or upgrade. On the original show, it seemed like in the later seasons the Conners were doing well with the diner and Dan's contractor business. I recall in one episode, they gave money for Becky to attend the local community college and when Darlene was getting married Dan tried to give her money. It would have made sense for them to do some upgrades around house and Dan could have done the upgrades and they would just had to pay for materials/supplies.
I have a friend whose late husband worked in construction with his father and other relatives prior to becoming a UPS driver. She said that they saved a lot of money over the years because he was able to do a lot of the repairs and upgrades in the house. She said he would only call in others if it was some project or repair he couldn't do at all or needed help with.

Why are people going on about Darlene being an obvious lesbian? There are tons of straight women who act and dress like Darlene. They don't wear makeup, they are the types of straight women who don't put much emphasis on their looks.
A relative's second wife could pass for Darlene, except she has scraggly great hair. His first wife was very feminine, pretty, always looked very well put together and always wore makeup. Everyone was shocked when he first introduced this slovenly looking grey haired woman as his new GF, a woman who became his second wife. She's also older than he is.
Ever think some straight men have no patience for women who spend so much time on their looks, not every straight guy wants a trophy wife who wears designer clothes.

Of course, I only know fake women and fake men! What you are describing are patriarchal stereotypes.
In the field work in, art, women who are actually working on creative projects, don't dress as you describe. Most of the women I work with don't necessarily "dress like dudes", but they sure aren't walking around in short skirts up to their twats and four inch fuck-me heels. Even in a corporate environment, who would take that slutty look seriously? Are you a bouncer at a strip joint?
You sound extremely clueless How a woman dresses for work depends on the field. It was the same when I did display work, none of us wore dress clothes, both the male and female display artists were dressed in jeans, basic shirts and plain blouses for the women and comfortable shoes. Display is kind of like construction work, you sure cannot wear nice clothing when you are adding extra makeup to a mannequin face or working with hot glue, paint and using tools.
In case you are not aware, straight women seem to care what other women think about how they dress, not about what some pervy creep drooling over them as they walk down the street thinks about their clothing. I assume you are gay? For a gay man, you don't know much about straight women, especially considering lots of gay men hang with straight women.
Darlene never had short hair, right there you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Darlene doesn't wear t-shirts everyday either.
Darlene and David were believable as a couple. Was Roseanne dressed in skirts and high heels? She was a straight woman, not exactly a sex bomb, but she managed to find her soul mate. Her factory job didn't call for her to wear a skirt and heels.
You are fucking clueless, especially about working class straight couples with not very glamorous jobs.

Darlene and David were not appropriate for each other or soul-mates either. The Darlene character was always a tomboyish, man-hating lesbian like her mother and aunt and grandmother. No female character on Roseanne were ever role models. They were all two dimensional stock characters. That is why their "characters", on the present shit-show The Conners, is so hard to write for. None of them were well-written or well-rounded. They were always meant to be two-dimensional, trailer-loving trash, and that is exactly how Roseanne wanted them to be. Get a fucking brain, you turd. The only character that was well-written and well-acted was the bisexual character Nancy. Roseanne destroyed any potential of any of these characters having longevity. She wrote them all into crap characters like Jacky, Darlene, and poor Becky got it the worst. When she returned with the new actress, Roseanne had dumbed her down to Chrissy Snow level stupid. What the fuck happened to the straight A, level-headed girl? She was destroyed by Roseanne, like everyone else.

Same writing style, same illogical thought processes (several actual lesbians have responded to him that they did not "choose" to be gay), and same angry defensiveness. But...maybe some straight women did choose to go gay for the night rather than pay him a second of attention. If he comes off this unhinged on an online forum, imagine how threateningly creepy he is in person.

Certainly when they established that he had been in the military, it seemed like a natural setup for an explanation of his death, which then never arrived. Who knows why they waited so long to reveal it or why they went with something different.
Of course being in the military doesn’t guarantee a character’s death — DJ was also in the military and he’s alive (though not exactly thriving as a character).

In the very last episode of the original series, Roseanne hinted at another universe in which Becky married David, Darlene paired up with Mark and Jackie was a big ol lesbian. The Connors is just another parallel reality.
by Anonymous | reply 555 | April 22, 2021 8:53 PM |
That was the other universe in Roseanne’s brain.
by Anonymous | reply 556 | April 22, 2021 10:36 PM |
R485 I refused to watch once they fired Roseanne. Her fighting the network is the only reason the original was good. Plus, she’s effortlessly hilarious and a comedic genius, though admittedly batshit insane. I’ve never seen it and never will. And I hate Sara Gilbert for throwing Rosie under the bus.
by Anonymous | reply 557 | April 22, 2021 10:38 PM |
Yeah, because Sara Gilbert made fat, insane Roseanne post racist Tweets. Roseanne was a big fat fucking liability and would have ultimately cost them advertisers. As it is, Roseanne cost a bunch of people their jobs, which Sara saved. Sara didn’t throw anyone under the bus. Roseanne did it to herself.
by Anonymous | reply 558 | April 22, 2021 11:18 PM |
Can you imagine what inflammatory shit she would’ve said over the past few years if she still had the show and the spotlight? She probably would’ve been tweeting that the Coronavirus is a hoax, mask wearing doesn’t work, Americans should refuse the vaccine and George Floyd deserved to die. She was self-destructive and wouldn’t have stopped until she sunk the whole fucking show. ABC avoided a slow moving train wreck. Only a numbskull like Defacto would place blame with the network executives who performed emergency surgery to rescue the patient.
by Anonymous | reply 559 | April 22, 2021 11:33 PM |
Roseanne is a Q nut. She has been since 2017. She's even worse now. She didn't call out Valerie Jarrett because of racism, she called her out because she thinks Valerie Jarett drinks baby blood.
I kind of resent Sara for not handing the reins over to somebody competent. There are just so many missed opportunities on this show, and they trample all over the show's history for no reason at all. Little Ed was a perfect example. They destroyed the character of Crystal and everything we knew to be true from the original, all for a character we've never heard from again.
They can do what they want with the show, yes. But they keep using clips from the original to play on our nostalgia, and they shit on the original and act like it doesn't matter. It's really insulting to the audience.

"Why are people going on about Darlene being an obvious lesbian?"
Because Sara Gilbert oozes dykedom. She has no chemistry with ANY of her male lovers on the show. When she kisses them it's like she's kissing a block of wood. And of course her looks scream lesbo, too. Lots of women dress casually and don't wear make up but they don't give off that lesbian vibe and Sara Gilbert reeks of it.
by Anonymous | reply 563 | April 23, 2021 1:13 AM |
Good lord, R563. She's not having sex on screen with the male co-stars. Did you know that the dude who plays superman really can't fly? You just keep ranting and ranting about Sara Gilbert's looks. You sound unhinged.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | April 23, 2021 2:37 AM |
In the 90s, Roseanne was able to mix controversy with humor. There was some social justice, but she didn't try to hit you over the head with it.
This new show should be called the Woke Conners. There are four grandkids. One is half black, one is half latino, and one is an openly gay boy who wears women's clothing. Among the three kids, there's the alcoholic daughter, the son with PTSD, and the daughter who spent every 90s episode planning her escape from Lanford. Then there's the lesbian couple who wanted to adopt Becky's baby and the trans boss at the factory. In Lanford. There have been three storylines of 40+ women and pregnancy: the Sarah Chalke character, Becky's accidental knock-up, and Darlene's visit to the fertility doctor. granddaughter and Becky's undocumented latino baby daddy. (Who do they think the target audience is?) Sara Gilbert should have produced TV movies of the week instead instead of trying to fit as many woke tropes as possible into a single sitcom.
You know what's missing? A loud, fat woman. It's what made the show work.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | April 23, 2021 2:53 AM |
"You sound unhinged."
You sound like your dick is hard (or your pussy is wet) for Sara Gilbert. You're weird. And by the way, If you're an actor in a love scene you're at least supposed to LOOK like you're getting into it. When kissing a guy Sara Gilbert looks like she's tolerating it, not liking it. I think in a love scene with a female she would come across as actually being attracted to the person.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | April 23, 2021 2:55 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 568 | April 23, 2021 2:58 AM |
The Crystal character was ruined in the 90s. At first, the writers intended Crystal to play a bigger role as Roseanne's best friend. But as the chemistry between Roseanne and Jackie grew, the show focused more on their relationship as sisters, and Crystal's role grew smaller. It seemed like Crystal was popular in high school, and her high school years had been her glory days. She seemed to be a little high maintenance, but she was a loyal friend to Roseanne. However, Roseanne regularly treated Crystal horribly. Roseanne acted more like a bully who pretended to be a friend.

"Loved scenes?" I guess you mean "love scenes." Any maybe you need a new pair of eyeglasses or can't digest images on a tv screen because of a mental disability. Because the character of Darlene, played by Sara Gilbert, has kissed male characters on the show who were supposed to be her lover. And it always looks like she'd rather be doing something else. She is NOT into kissing guys, and it shows. She doesn't have the acting ability to hide it. Anybody with functioning eyes and a functioning brain can see that.

Oh, come on, R573. You are obsessed with your hatred of Sara Gilbert's looks. Why don't you write to the ABC and demand that they replace her with Britney Spears. Britney can't act, but she's pretty to look at. Will that make you happy? You're a gay man, so why do you care so much about what a female actress/character looks like.
Here are some of your choice quotes from this thread:
How can anybody watch this dreck? A bunch of unattractive, unlikable people with miserable lives . . .
who would believe that a hag like Darlene would have men hitting on her?
Boy, that is one uncomfortable looking couple at R86! Well, I guess they would be. She was a closeted lesbian and he was her beard for the evening. Doesn't seem like they were having much fun.
Looking at old photos it's evident that Sara Gilbert has had as much plastic surgery as Roseanne Barr. In neither case did it help much. Can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
Darlene pregnant? If that's going to happen then it's obvious the writers of this show are REALLY desperate.
Darlene is 43? She looks at least 55.
Ben is a loser dickhead. Anybody who would get involved with someone like Darlene (surly. homely female with an insane family) would have to be.
Because Sara Gilbert oozes dykedom. She has no chemistry with ANY of her male lovers on the show. . . . And of course her looks scream lesbo, too. Lots of women dress casually and don't wear make up but they don't give off that lesbian vibe and Sara Gilbert reeks of it.
WE GET IT. You hate the way Darlene / Sara Gilbert looks. You hate that she plays a straight character. But why is it stuck in your craw? How about you? Do you try to play as a straight-acting man? Do you try to "pass" as straight? Do you get the same results as Sara? To find out why you hate someone, look in the mirror.

Who isn't a little bit in love with Sara Gilbert? Darlene is one of the great depressed characters of all time. And Sara gives us The Connors. She doesn't have to be pretty. She was never meant to be pretty. She's appealing to certain men because of her strength and intelligence. She's not a neurotic. Some guys love that.
Give Lecy Goranson an Emmy nomination please. She has proven time and again that her slightly alien approach to character is not bad technique - just a very unique take on her character. She cried real tears and made me cry in her rehab breakdown last night. I don't cry at fakery. She is a fine actress and quite unusual. Sara Gilbert is much more limited, but she's got a way about her that we are comfortable with. I bet she's a wildcat in bed. And just a bit sweet afterwards.❤️
I'm glad that Katey Sagal has her own show now. Because that woman would never be interested in Dan Conner for long. He's also very believable as an embittered, unhealthy lost loser in life. It's hard to tell where the actors begin and the characters end. The lines are not very organic anymore, but the characters have live there long enough that I forgive the show some things. Some weeks.
Last night's show was on form. Lecy and John Goodman were excellent. We remembered who Dan and Becky once were. And Laurie Metcalf had some delicious bits of small business. Great show.
Gilbert had a very good scene at the school too. I wish she would wear lingerie sometimes. She's a hot bitch in real life.

Roseanne would have done the same exact things that other tedious ReThug loon Tim Allen was allowed to do on his last TV series. Surprised that crap show lasted so long.
Tim's show was a series where a normal conversation would turn into Tim putting down Obama, healthcare, complaining about his taxes, bring up 'personal responsibility' and generally acting like the asshole he truly is. A ridiculous rant was suddenly part of a scene which had zero to do with politics. No one wants to hear the main performer's political bullshit.
Didn't Tim Allen spend jail time because he was a coke dealer? It's always amazing when people go from one extreme to the other. Especially when you look back on the Roseanne character, she was a SJW before there were any! She was always fighting for her and her colleagues at that awful factory job, which she quit due to the horrible bald boss (the real life politician turned actor) constantly harassing her and because of the factory's terrible working conditions.
No one would have ever imagined the Roseanne character becoming a conspiracy theory nut job, let alone a ReThug.

Tim Allen was nowhere near as bad as Roseanne. He is a conservative, and there’s nothing wrong with that. She became an unhinged lunatic ranting and raving on social media. Tim Allen shuns the celebrity spotlight while Roseanne bathed in it. They’re two completely different people and situations.

R582, R580 is not the incel / Darlene troll. R580 has made mature and positive statements about the looks and talents of Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Katey Sagal.
The incel and the Darlene troll show up as two separate posters, but I believe they are the same person because of their mutual, irrational dislike of Darlene (due to her looks and lesbianism) and their use of the word "loser". It must be one person using a sock puppet in addition to their main account.

I agree that Roseanne is an unhinged lunatic, but I don't agree that they aren't equally as bad. They are essentially, two sides of the same coin.
Most viewers simply want to be entertained, not preached to, not have their politics shoved down viewers throats. Most people come home tired from work, they might want to chill out and laugh for a few hours. If I want to hear political discussions or hear celebrities political opinions, I will watch a news channel or an actual political show on PBS.
Of course, I'd rather be a fan of a performer whose politics align with mine, on the other hand, if a TV series makes me laugh or just plain entertains me on some level, I usually don't care what a performers politics are, unless they are racist, homophobic. misogynistic or a xenophobe.
A lot of what Tim Allen seemed to allude to on his show is mostly what I listed, a lot of his 'jokes' on his series were also clearly about foreigners taking advantage of US social service programs, Allen he wasn't solely about being a 'conservative". What sort of conservative do you think he is? Fiscal? From the endless rants on his show he's much more that that. Why is this acceptable on any sitcom? Especially when Allen's political opinions had little to do with the storylines.

R583 Roseanne was not an SJW, you shiny turd. She was a toxic "feminist" and they've been around since the 60s. Dan even made a joke about it. Feminist does not equate to SJW, moron. Roseanne had all the power in the first run of Roseanne. She kicked out every person she hated and had nothing but lackies unable to stand up to her. That's why everything after season 5 was garbage. She tried the same thing with the reboot. Thinking she had all the cards but in reality, they would've ditched her for any reason.

Whatever became of Dan's parents? Some of Goodman's best work on the show was opposite Ned Beatty as his ne'er do well dad (and his gentle mom, who suffered from mental illness). I know Ed married Crystal and they had Little Ed, and while Ned Beatty would probably prefer not to return to the show, it would be interesting to find out what happened to them. Also Bev (Estelle Parsons) is still alive - didn't she cough up something like $2K for Mark's tuition someplace in a previous episode? Even if she died off camera, it would be interesting to see Jackie's reaction - losing both her sister and her mother would give Jackie something to do besides being such a ridiculous buffoon all the time. Supposedly she has some money, right?
Also it would be kind of cool if Jerry and Andy (Roseanne and Jackie's late in life sons) showed up, rich and successful, and bailed the family out in some fashion - like if they were cannabis entrepreneurs (didn't Jerry "go to Alaska?") Just idle musing-

I think it's possible to believe the Connors' house isn't paid off yet. I'm sure they had to refinance several times to make ends meet or take advantage of lower interest rates. They also had at least one 2nd mortgage.
Dad did own the drywall business but he was always under bidding to get those jobs. If someone didn't buy his business, he wouldn't have any money.

I am pretty sure that Estelle Parsons must be unwell in life. She hasn't been on this season at all. Alluded to but never seen. And her hilarious relationship with Jackie, or even her running commentary on Darlene and Becky would be gold. I'm sure the show will not kill off Bev as long as Estelle Parsons is alive. Which is only right. Roseanne used to have some integrity as A show. (Yes, even with Tom Arnold) And what it offered better than anything was the continuity of guests and neighbours and old friends and family members. Over decades.
It's not so sad that Candice Bergen is getting work or that Sara and Lecy are network TV stars. It's kind of radical in a way. Familiar to the show. The show always had a lot of loyalty to some rather odd players and characters. But the Roseanne show is long gone in terms of standards, scripts and storylines.

I agree. Crystal reminded me a couple of a few of my parents' friends They could be annoying or overbearing at times, but they always meant well.
Some of my favorite episodes from the original show were the ones that featured Crystal quite a bit like the one about the bridge where her late husband's body was, the tornado episode where she was at stuck at the Conner house, the episodes of dating/marrying Ed. The bridal shower scenes were hilarious.

The tornado episode was fucking ridiculous. When a tornado hits your town, you don't have people driving to your house to get out of the way of the storm -- you don't have that much advance warning. When a real tornado hits, you have only a few minutes to get to your basement, then a few minutes later the storm is over. On the show they treated it more like a hurricane. Hurricanes don't happen in Illinois.
