Ghislaine Maxwell Loses Fight To Keep ‘Intimate’ Deposition Secret

Ghislaine Maxwell lost her appeal to keep court documents connected to Jeffrey Epstein secret Monday, after a federal court decided that the public’s right to access the documents outweighs Maxwell’s personal interests, dealing a blow to her ongoing criminal case but delivering a win to federal prosecutors seeking to prove she lied under oath in a 2016 deposition.

In their decision, the Second Circuit wrote that the Southern District of New York “did not abuse its discretion in rejecting Maxwell’s meritless arguments that her interests superseded the presumption of access” when the documents were originally ordered to be unsealed in July.

Maxwell was trying to keep a 2016 deposition secret, because the document reportedly contains “intimate” information about her sex life, among other personal matters.

Federal prosecutors in her criminal case believe Maxwell perjured herself in that deposition, and Monday’s ruling means the document will be made public.

The deposition is from a settled defamation case between Maxwell and alleged Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre.

Lawyers for both sides—including legendary attorney David Boies representing Giuffre—argued before the Second Circuit on October 13 as to whether the deposition should remain sealed.

Adam Mueller, representing Maxwell, said that the deposition was under a protective order from the settled lawsuit and that if it was revealed, it would harm her right to a fair jury trial, while Boies said the public deserved to have the full document.

In an ideal world, it won't be appealed, and documents will be released quickly and will include Trump revelations.

We just want the names.

by Anonymousreply 2October 19, 2020 10:07 PM

She ain't dead yet?

Ol' bloated Billy must really be in some dire straits if he hasn't managed to "suicide" gizzy yet.

by Anonymousreply 3October 19, 2020 10:09 PM

R3, I think you meant "bloated Donny." I mean, have you even seen Bill Clinton in the last ten years?

Holy cow! It's a 418-page statement.

She was a busy gal.

by Anonymousreply 5October 19, 2020 10:16 PM

r4 Bill Barr is also bloated. Bill Barr has also tried to have a representative meet with Ms Maxwell, only Ghislaine's lawyers are smarter than Jeffrey's, and she is moved from cell to cell.

by Anonymousreply 6October 19, 2020 10:16 PM

Oh c'mon, r4.

by Anonymousreply 7October 19, 2020 10:17 PM

She's ridiculous to think anyone is actually interested in HER sex life, everybody just wants names. She's going to spend the rest of her life in jail, she doesn't need to worry anymore what anyone thinks about her sex life. She'll be forgotten soon enough.

by Anonymousreply 8October 19, 2020 10:29 PM

Are you simple, R8? That was just the line she used to justify her fight to keep it sealed. Do you really think she'd admit to the court that she needs to keep it sealed because there's incriminating details in there that will hurt her defense in this case?

She's grasping at straws. And doubtless she's been promised that if she keeps her mouth shut about other people she's in a position to implicate, she'll get her reward. Making the deposition public could wreck that deal for her.

by Anonymousreply 9October 19, 2020 10:33 PM

Bill Barr is finished. Jizz is going to snitch on his pervert father and pervert Babyhands. Let’s hope this all comes to light on November 1.

by Anonymousreply 10October 19, 2020 10:54 PM

Wouldn't that be wonderful?

Who do we think are the two high profile names who tried to block it? My money's on Trump and Clinton.

by Anonymousreply 22October 20, 2020 12:34 AM

Following this ruling by the Second Circuit, when can we expect to have the document? An unexpurgated version would be best.

by Anonymousreply 23October 20, 2020 12:43 AM

As little as I care about this cum-splattered cunt's, well, cum-splattered cunt, it fills me with joy to know that every sordid detail of her vile existence will be public knowledge.

by Anonymousreply 24October 20, 2020 12:45 AM

I think Bill Clinton is involved too R22. If Trump was clean, you know he would have been roasting Bill all along in addition to his Hillary rants.

While we wait: "the boldface-name Ghislaine, who seemed to be everywhere at once, so socially connected and sexually self-assured that she once hosted a dinner for East Side socialites on the fine art of giving a blow job, with dildos at each place setting." This was from Vanity Fair in July.

by Anonymousreply 58October 22, 2020 1:10 PM

That 2-piece fringed denim number looks like it was made from Butterick pattern from JoAnn Fabrics. And that lesbian-matron hairstyle certainly doesn't help her hard, plain ugly mug either. I don't know who was getting it up for this desperate freak. Probably why she resorted to trafficking young girls, so she could get in on any part of the action. I wish someone WOULD kill her, but only after the names come out.

Which is exactly the advice any decent attorney would give their client prior to a deposition, whether guilty or innocent.

Once you say "I don't remember" there is no where else for the questioner to go. If they repeat the question, your attorney will simply pop in with "Asked and answered".

If you give any other answer, it allows for a deeper line of questioning that can go in any direction, including directions for which you are unprepared.

by Anonymousreply 71October 22, 2020 1:49 PM

Until they come up with the “does this refresh your recollection” item.

by Anonymousreply 72October 22, 2020 1:52 PM

"I don't understand the question, what did you mean bring?"

by Anonymousreply 73October 22, 2020 1:53 PM

If opposing counsel has a "does this refresh your recollection" item and your attorney hasn't prepared you for it, you need a new attorney.

by Anonymousreply 74October 22, 2020 1:56 PM

At a deposition?

There’s no Brady rule for a civil deposition.

If you’re asked if you’ve ever met someone and you say “I don’t remember,” even though you did meet that person, they could produce a photograph of you with that person to “refresh your recollection.” Opposing counsel would’ve had no right to the photograph beforehand.

by Anonymousreply 75October 22, 2020 2:00 PM

Sadly, many actresses escort on the side. There was a TV actress who wrote about it on Medium (she was between jobs and needed the money, did it once, hated it - and hers was a "no touch" deal, she was only parading around on a yacht).

by Anonymousreply 78October 22, 2020 2:08 PM

A. Are you asking me about underage girls?

I'd never heard of the show before so I can't give you the name, and I didn't know the actress either (25-30 maybe). I think she was Canadian.

She wrote about her experience "yachting" on the website called Medium.com, that has nothing to do with the TV show of the same name. This story has literally nothing to do with the hit TV show Medium.

Julie Brown says some of the names redacted are Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew

by Anonymousreply 82October 22, 2020 2:29 PM

"I have no idea what you are talking about" another classic line that sounds like a full confesssion, and that Ghislaine Maxwell uses repeatedly whenever asked about Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

by Anonymousreply 83October 22, 2020 2:30 PM

She also says that the court redacted other men who may have been present at Jeffers homes or plane. She is unclear as to what basis those names were redacted.

by Anonymousreply 84October 22, 2020 2:32 PM

[quote]Julie Brown says some of the names redacted are Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew

Bill is actually mentioned, unredacted. But since this is about the Virginia Giuffre accusations, it was just in the context of her claims of seeing him on the island. I guess his name could have been redacted elsewhere in the deposition though, like maybe if it's something that implicates him directly.

by Anonymousreply 85October 22, 2020 2:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 87October 22, 2020 2:50 PM

What time is the "presidential debate" tonight?

by Anonymousreply 88October 22, 2020 2:54 PM

Ok I found the index at the end of the document, where even the redactions are alphabetical. I'm pretty sure one is for Clinton. I looked at a few pages but didn't see anything incriminating yet, just asking about him flying on the plane etc. Sometimes the name is redacted and sometimes it isn't. Again though Giuffre claimed to see him there (though she didn't accuse him of anything beyond that), so I guess they would ask about him as a result of these claims. Seemingly no mention of Trump, but maybe another accuser will come forward...

by Anonymousreply 107October 23, 2020 2:33 AM

Slate shows you how to crack the redactions...

[quote]It turns out, though, that those redactions are possible to crack. That’s because the deposition—which you can read in full here—includes a complete alphabetized index of the redacted and unredacted words that appear in the document. For example, after cracking the redactions, we know that Maxwell was asked about an email that Dershowitz allegedly sent to Epstein. In that email, Dershowitz reportedly wrote that he was “working on several possible articles about unfairness in the legal process that allows false charges to be inserted into legal documents.”

[quote]Here’s how to deduce the redacted words, using former President Bill Clinton as an example.

[quote]You can see in the index that a word that falls alphabetically between clients and clock appears on quite a number of pages. From this, we know that the word starts with the letters CL.

NYT does a rundown on the Jizz dep...

[quote]Over and over again in the 418-page deposition, Ms. Maxwell, 58, rejected accusations of wrongdoing. She denied that she had recruited minors to give Mr. Epstein sexual massages. She denied that she knew he was abusing girls and young women. She denied having engaged in sexual acts herself with underage people. “I can’t think of anything I have done that is illegal,” she said.

[quote]At one point, Ms. Maxwell was asked more than a dozen times if she believed that Mr. Epstein had abused any minors — and each time she failed to answer. At another point, she parried inquiries about a laundry basket of sex toys, telling the lawyer asking questions, “I need you to define a sex toy.”

[quote]Eventually, Ms. Maxwell became so frustrated that she suddenly erupted into a “physical outburst” and knocked the court reporter’s computer off the conference room table, according to a separate document released with her deposition. She later apologized for her behavior, the deposition said.
