Sophia Lillis, Paul Bettany and Peter Macdissi star in Uncle Frank, and the first trailer is here!
The upcoming Amazon movie will debut on Prime Video on Thanksgiving.
Here's a plot summary: "In 1973, teenaged Beth Bledsoe (Sophia Lillis) leaves her rural Southern hometown to study at New York University where her beloved Uncle Frank (Paul Bettany) is a revered literature professor. After the sudden death of Frank's father -- Beth's grandfather -- Frank is forced to reluctantly return home for the funeral with Beth in tow, and to finally face a long-buried trauma that he has spent his entire adult life running away from."
The movie also stars Stephen Root, Margo Martindale, Steve Zahn, Judy Greer and Lois Smith.

I would be more interested in the adventures of teenage Tempestt Bledsoe.

Margo is her usual effortlessly brilliant self as is Ms. Lois Smith.

Ugh, what a disappointment, so much potential, but so much talent wasted on a flawed story by Ball. I get that it’s a period piece, but that doesn’t mean it needed to be moored down by period tropes.

Lillis is ethereal, she is potentially one of the great actresses of her generation. Everything I’ve seen her in raises the quality of the production, even this which is deeply flawed. Looking forward to seeing her in more things of better quality.

So, I never realized that Amazon Prime Originals get reviewed on the Amazon website, almost as if you purchased a DVD of it. There were some beautiful performances, art direction, period setting pieces and such, but considering the work is by Alan Ball, there is so very much problematic about it. Overall, there’s a majority of five stars, but most of them are overtly fawning over Ball or the gay storyline.
Wanting a more critical eye I decided to read the one star reviews, which make up 10%. Maybe I’m naive, but I wasn’t expecting outright homophobic complaints, which were the majority. The aptly named Karen H. who entitled her review “not for me” wrote “I was enjoying it till the gay stuff. That is when I stopped.” Another person said “Repulsive! Another indicator of a perverse nation.” Another said “sexual immorality.” I reported these as abuse, for their homophobic stance.

Alan Ball is not the amazing writing talent he thinks she is.

Lame.
The most interesting thing about it was the lead actress looks and sounds like a young Amy Adams. It really was some Hallmark shit...although everyone except the Saudi Arabian bf gave a good performance.

I agree. He peaked with Six Feet Under.

SPOILER@@@@@@@
So Frank didn’t kill himself. He just went for a swim yet only removed his shirt, jacket and jewelry. But the niece and bf didn’t see him in the water? And Frank made it back to the motel? Ridiculous.

I agree, R16.
And yes, that made zero sense R15. And the neice and partner didn't call the police, thinking Frank had died?

I liked a lot of it (Bettany and Lillis are good) but Alan Ball's boyfriend -- I didn't know who he is was until after watching the movie -- is BADDDDDDD

Wally's enormous fluffy wig was very distracting -- and bad. It made him look like an Arab Ann Miller after a comb out.

I liked it. That young actress is very winning.

I liked it, too, though it was certainly flawed. Mostly good performances -- the young actress is indeed very appealing -- and quite cathartic at the end. I'd say it's roughly equivalent to the old Hallmark Hall of Fame productions that used to run on network TV.

I had no idea the actor playing Wally is Ball’s bf. I thought he was good. It’s a larger than life character in a very low key movie but I didn’t think he overdid it.

Oh I forgot about MSW, I live with another old troll who can watch that like it's crack. Old trolls are all the same it seems, must be genetic.

Oh, now it makes sense! The guy playing Wally was so out of his depth compared to the other actors (especially the lead actress, Paul Bettany, Margot Martindale and Stephen Root), I should’ve guessed he was fucking the director. He was bad...seriously...anytime I started to feel emotional about where things were going, there he was to turn things into an after school special. He seems like he’d be a better stage actor—film just isn’t his element.

My partner of 12 years killed himself! I'm going to go straight to the motel and destroy things instead of calling the police!
