Charlie Siem, British Violinist and HUNK
This man is absolutely stunning. Anybody have any info on him? He not only is great looking but he dresses perfectly and seems to come from a very posh background as well. He showed up on my Instagram today with Aldous Bertram, another very handsome British man and decorator now living in Charleston - I wonder if they are a couple.
(I'm having a hard time getting a pic of him to post on here so I'm linking is web page and you can go to Gallery to see pics - if someone else can posst a pic of him for me, please do)

Re his last name: Siem is a Hebrew name: "MEANING: This name derives from Hebrew “Shim‛ôn” (Ancient Greek: Símōn “Σῐ́μων”), meaning “He (God) has heard”. In turn, it derives from the word “sh'ma”, meaning “listen” (God has heard your prayer to grant a child)."
Also: North German: from a reduced form of the Germanic personal name Siegmar (see Siemer). Norwegian: variant of Seim.
Guess he's a German Jew?

Is it Bach who wrote those pieces for solo violin?
I hate them. Or were they solos for viola? They are dirge-like.
But a violin is much more palatable with an orchestra behind them.
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 44 | May 27, 2021 10:49 PM

R44 Yes, it was Bach, but there are several movements in the six unaccompanied violin sonatas and partitas that have fast tempos, and some movements that are dance-like. The most famous movement, the Chaconne, is indeed dirge-like, and there are other movements like that. When I was deciding on another instrument to play as a kid after playing the piano for just 3 years and not wanting to go on, one of the reasons I chose the violin was I thought I’d only have to play one note at a time. I was foiled about 5 years later when I had to play four notes at a time in some of these Bach pieces.

R42 Yes, as I commented up-thread R34 after listening to only the links in this thread, his playing is not refined-enough to make him a major performer. As a violinist myself, I can hear technical problems that prevent him from reaching a higher level (not that I have, either, but I’m an amateur).

R46 I'm not a musician, so forgive a stupid question, but I wonder how a sub-par violinist can perform at Bolshoi and Carnegie Hall. Surely, the competition in the classical world is too high for him to just coast on his good looks?
Also, how do his skills compare to other popular violinists like Vanessa Mae and David Garrett?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 28, 2021 12:02 AM
|
R47 It's not a stupid question. To me, the top-level soloists will be performing with top-level orchestras like the NY Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, etc. I'm not familiar with the violinists you mentioned, but I think of violinists like Hillary Hahn as being top-level. After decades of major performances and recordings, it's amazing to see her still "woodshedding" those same pieces in her practice videos on You Tube. My violin teacher used to tell me that you never stop practicing things you've already worked on, because there's always more you can do. It was things like that that made me realize I didn't have the patience and stamina to be a professional violinist.

R43 This being DL, I couldn't help but wonder, "Is R43 trying to figure out indirectly if Siem is cut?" Seriously though, his father Kristian is Norwegian, and his mother (nee Moross) is from South Africa, and I can't find anything about their religions in Google searches. However, the first name Kristian and last name Moross suggest neither is Jewish. So, Charlie may be intact (in case that WAS the reason for your post)!

R47, Vanessa Mae and David Garrett are trained professional classical musicians who decided to go down a more popular route. Perhaps they would never have made it as concert violinists, but they're definitely a level above Siem.
Has Siem performed at his own concerts at the Bolshoi of Carnegie Hall? He may have had a slot as part of a festival or been part of "rising stars" programme.

R54 I’ve followed him for a few years. He plays well with a very warm tone, but I’ve only heard him playing popular music arrangements, so I don’t know how he would do with more challenging repertoire. He and his husband Paul seem like a nice couple. Paul is an artist who is losing his eyesight. They seem quite dedicated to each other. Probably worth a follow if you like the sound of his violin playing and his type of repertoire.

R63 I can speak only as an amateur, but the Bach sonatas/partitas had more quadruple stops (4 string chords) than anything else I’ve played. In actuality, you can’t play 4 notes simultaneously; you have to quickly roll across them 2 strings at a time, which for me, only makes them more difficult!

R69 I’ve been on GLBT boards since soc.motss on Usenet in the 1980s. I learned early what can incite others, and I make every effort to be kind and to disagree gently. It takes effort and forethought to do that as I write, particularly about political issues that can elicit strong emotional responses. Twitter is very difficult for me because one of my carefully-worded sentences can easily exceed 280 characters! One of the things I like about DL is that, like Usenet way back in 1980s, you can write as little or as much as you want.

R71 Thanks for posting that link. I like the music, which brings out nice harmonies and sonorities from the string orchestra. I think he’s better at playing lyrical pieces than pyrotechnical show pieces. He does have an exceedingly fast vibrato, which I feel can detract from the long musical lines he wrote. He’s not alone in that, as a number of great violinists have had it. My violin teacher referred to it as the “nanny goat” vibrato, and I think an awareness of it has always stayed with me.

R74 Yes, I suppose by being born into great wealth he doesn’t need to become a highly-paid first rank soloist. I will say that learning to play the violin as well as he does takes an incredible amount of work, as does learning music composition, so I suppose he gets points for that. I don’t think I would buy a recording of him. He has a lot of competition, so maybe that’s why he seems to be his own biggest fan.

Performing at Carnegie Hall and being presented by Carnegie Hall are two very different things.
Anyone can rent Carnegie Hall, but to be presented by Carnegie Hall is the badge of honor in classical music such as Igor Levit's recital the other night
Siem does not have any career of note in the classical music field and his upcoming schedule on his website attests to that.

Not really r99. André Rieu is incredibly successful and has fans who love him and his work all over the world. Rieu doesn't pretend to be a serious classical musician - he's an entertainer who likes to make people happy. He's hit on a great formula and it works. In any case, classical music in its day was not only about being serious and deep, but about magic and dance and fantasy, which is what Rieu provides. He called his orchestra the Johann Strauss Orchestra because that's the musical tradition he works in.
Charlie Siem is a dilettante.
