WHET Jennifer Tilly?

I never understood why her career dried up so fast. She was talented, and attractive.

Was it that she’s Eurasian? Was it her voice? That seemed to be part of what made her famous.

Idk but I do wish she had a better career.

She’s 62 now.

Funny you mention her, because I had one of her Chucky movies on in the background. It was on AMC. I always loved her in those movies. She's done a few more of those recently and is signed on to do the series, but not much else. It's a shame, too. I really like her as a performer.

She was married to Sam Simon, one of the first producers of The Simpsons. When they divorced, she got half his money. Many tens of millions. What bothered Sam Simon about that was that Jennifer Tilly refused to ever watch an episode because she doesn’t like cartoons. Howard Stern had her on and Sam Simon called in. It was still a very amicable divorce

by Anonymousreply 16October 11, 2020 4:44 PM

She’s a very funny comic actress, but was also great in the tense crime thriller Bound with DL legend Gina Gershwin.

Her performance as herself in Bride of Chucky was splendid!

I can see her now in her sixties a as mom on a sitcom. Not sure what else she’d find for regular roles, but she’d be good in any humor-driven show.

by Anonymousreply 17October 11, 2020 4:51 PM

Love her. And she chose good films to be in, unlike some slags that put their faces in any nonsense.

I thought that was the Duchess of Sussex in Suits for a second. Maybe Meghan can develop and star in "Beyond Tiffany: The Jennifer Tilly Story" for Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 21October 11, 2020 5:08 PM

She is fucking weird, but I've always liked her and found her quasi-Marilyn Marilyn bimbo persona amusing at times. I think it's mostly an act, though she admittedly makes it hard to tell. Her sister Meg has always seemed notably more serious in demeanor.

by Anonymousreply 22October 11, 2020 5:11 PM

I always thought the Tilly Sisters were both underrated, but I prefer Jennifer. BULLETS OVER BROADWAY!

I like her. Jennifer has a sense of humor about the biz and about herself. I saw her on Craig Ferguson’s show one time making fun of her career. Something like doing the Chucky movies, although fun, was the beginning of the downward spiral that many aging actresses go through and that there’s no going back from that. She’s self-aware and smart, the opposite of the dumb brunette act she’s known for.

by Anonymousreply 27October 11, 2020 5:23 PM

I enjoyed seeing her on [italic]Hill Street Blues[/italic] and in [italic]Let It Ride[/italic]. She works what she has to good effect and doesn't whine that she isn't cast as a brain surgeon.

by Anonymousreply 29October 11, 2020 5:33 PM

She dates a guy in the poker world. The one they nicknamed “The Unabomber” he taught her poker in the early 2010s and she never looked back. she doesn’t care about acting and has said on record she’s rather win a wsop bracelet then an Oscar. I use to play pro poker. She’s decent. Not great. She makes a ton of money off of family guy voice work. I love her and her big titties. She’s doing what she wants to do. Respect. Acting for a living isn’t all that great or interesting if you find something you like better.

by Anonymousreply 30October 11, 2020 5:33 PM

No one cared that she was Eurasian. She has an awful speaking voice. No one wants to pay to listen to that.

That’s not nice. Meg was known for her serious roles and Jennifer for her comedic ones, particularly during the 80s. They sort of switched sometime in the 90s and Meg did more comedies while Jennifer switched to dramas.

Funny you mention a Tilly sister, OP, because I’ve been hooked on watching Meg’s new YouTube channel Meg’s Cozy Tea Time. She’s an author these days, and she lives in Canada with her husband. I love watching her recount stories in that baby voice (yes, she has one too!) about her long career working with tons of famous actors and directors, while sipping on various teas. In this video, she recounts the horrible time she had making Psycho 2 because of Anthony Perkins.

by Anonymousreply 35October 11, 2020 10:31 PM

Op, what do you mean what happened to it. It's Hollywood, she got older. Happens to everyone

Over 40 roles dry up for woman. They can't be the romantic lead anymore. They play character roles & mothers. A few can be leads through their 40s (but not romantic- because their male contemporaries have younger woman casted) After 50 it's time to go to television and get something.

by Anonymousreply 49October 12, 2020 4:44 PM

I always liked Meg. She seems as fun as Jennifer in her own way, but she never really played fun characters on screen like Jennifer has. She was always the wide eyed innocent. Apparently, she played Martha in a regional production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf awhile back. I'd have liked to have seen how she played that role. She's not the first person you'd think of to play that role.

Carol Kane has been getting acclaim for her role on "Hunters." I could easily see Jennifer Tilly getting a third act career reviver.

by Anonymousreply 54October 12, 2020 6:42 PM

She was a one-note actress who could only play one kind of role: wee voiced sexpot. Kind of like Melanie Griffith. She's aged out of sexpot roles, so that's why her acting career is pretty much over. She still does voice over work (with that funny voice of her of course she would) and she does well playing poker, too.

by Anonymousreply 55October 12, 2020 6:48 PM

I’m a fan of both Tilly sisters; they’re smart, good interviewees with lives and interests outside of the entertainment industry.

Jennifer is the trained actress of the two; Meg was a dancer, but an injury in her early twenties put an end to that, so she decided to pursue acting as well.

Success came faster for Meg, but she stopped acting for well over a decade to raise her kids. Jennifer’s career gained more momentum around that time, and she is the more famous of the two today.

Jennifer says Harvey Weinstein was not planning an Oscar campaign for her for ‘Bullets over Broadway,’ as Miramax’s resources were focused on Dianne Wiest for the same picture. Tilly took out her own ads with the Miramax logo copied and pasted on them to look like she had studio backing. She ended up with a nomination, and joked that she thought she was on her way to a Cate Blanchett career, but ended up the bride of Chucky.

by Anonymousreply 56October 12, 2020 6:49 PM

Jennifer seems like a cool lady. Of course, it's easy to be cool and ironic about your shitty career when you are sitting on a pile of Simpsons cash.

by Anonymousreply 57October 12, 2020 6:55 PM

someone made a comment like her work in Bride of Chucky led to a career decline. One of the biggest misconceptions about the celebrity trolls around here (the guys with no entertainment experience but endless interest in tracking career ups and downs) is that everything is connected. You could play that game for huge ticket selling box office stars but other than that, it's mostly actors just hopping from gig to gig. And in some cases, its even that with big box office actors. There's rarely a negative cause and effect.

Although certain roles can sometimes lead to new attention resulting in additional work. But even then, it's gig hopping. In other words, she didn't miss out on great roles because she did a few weeks of Chucky work every few years. She wasn't getting other work, didn't need the money, and didn't want to audition.

by Anonymousreply 58October 12, 2020 8:55 PM

C'mon now. Hollywood is very "you can't sit with us." The actress from That '70s Show wouldn't have got that little run as a leading lady in movies if she hadn't got "Black Swan."

by Anonymousreply 59October 12, 2020 8:58 PM

R59 I was making the point about character actors.

You're referring to leading studio roles that Kunis got following Black Swan. There used to be until recently a starmaking system that was still somewhat of a crapshoot with some rules about what types of roles and projects could turn actors into movie stars. It's mostly bullshit. Managers and agents push their clients to work in whatever's available and paying well. And when they get tired of talent and the talent's box office days are numbered, they push them into shitty projects that pay well until the actor goes to a different agency.

by Anonymousreply 60October 12, 2020 9:06 PM

There's a hierarchy with characters actors as well.

by Anonymousreply 61October 12, 2020 9:10 PM

She was a featured character on "HIll Street Blues" for a few episodes. She played Gina Srignoli, the sexpot young wife of a mobster named "Paul the Wall." After he finally drops dead she gets rich from inheriting all his money. After he keeps her from getting hurt in some kind of police sting she falls madly in love with Henry Goldblume. They flaunt they torrid affair, much to the annoyance of Harry Garibaldi (he ahd designs on Gina) and Faye Furillo, who used to be Henry's girlfriend. It looks like she and Henry are going to live happily ever after until she gets whacked in a restaurant in the presence of Henry, Harry and Faye. Her demise was very satisfying. Gina Srignoli was one of the most annoying characters on Hill Street Blues, and that's really saying something.

Meg was a dancer in the Fame film with kind of an iconic moment. She's the dancer in the blue shirt lifted into the air at around the 1:30 mark. That lift was always used in trailer and stills for the film.

She was cast as the wife in Amadeus and hurt her leg playing soccer and had to be replaced. I always wondered how hurt the leg could have been. It was a six month shoot. Couldn't the work around her? She's said it was a huge disappointment but Agnes of God made up for it.

Meg talks about everything on her YouTube channel, from her early days sharing an apt in LA with Jennifer, to the nightmare it was to work with Anthony Perkins, to her relationship with Anne Bancroft while making Agnes of God and lots of other stories about her career. A really funny story she recalls was the time she arrived at the studio lot where they were meeting for a table read for The Big Chill, and how the guard refused to let her in. She panicked, found a pay phone and called the rehearsal room in tears, explaining to William Hurt what happened. I bet the guard regretted what he did!

A lot of actors don’t want to be Hollywood stars for decades, they just want to make enough money from bigger roles for a few years so they can relax, not work all the time, and fund smaller projects that interest them. Jennifer and Meg seem happy enough and it’s refreshing to see they haven’t carved up their faces into grotesques.

by Anonymousreply 82October 13, 2020 7:10 AM

I disagree. Jennifer Ehle got Firth at his hottest. He was still slightly gawky in the late '80s.

by Anonymousreply 83October 13, 2020 7:28 AM

These videos of Meg are very refreshing. She looks well maintained for her age, but doesn't fuss around with big Hollywood hair and makeup and seems like she only acts when she wants to now and gets more joy from writing. She seems very happy.

There's a story she tells about Nicholson in one of her videos about how he tried to get with her, but she says he was very sweet and charming about it and never overdid it to the point of becoming creepy.

by Anonymousreply 84October 13, 2020 5:22 PM

Yeah - she married Sam Simon before The Simpsons and then got a great amount of money and a percentage of perpetual residuals that still goes on today due to the divorce.

It's like how Tracey Ullmann is worth $200 million. Tracey never really hit it big to justify that nest egg - that's mainly all Simpsons money, as the Simpson started on her Fox sketch show.

And she stopped playing poker a loooong time ago. She had money to burn and apparently, at one point, she lost a shitload and woke the fuck up from that.

by Anonymousreply 92October 14, 2020 3:07 AM

"Tracey never really hit it big to justify that nest egg - that's mainly all Simpsons money, as the Simpson started on her Fox sketch show."

She didn't get any "Simpsons money." This is from Mental Floss:

If you were born after 1989, you probably only know The Simpsons as a staple of Sunday night television on Fox. But before Springfield’s most beloved family had their own network sitcom, they were just one of several recurring sketches on The Tracey Ullman Show, a variety show in which the titular comedienne portrayed a variety of characters. (The Simpsons made their debut 30 years ago, on April 19, 1987.)

Ullman’s show, which was co-created by James L. Brooks, lasted for four seasons, with the final episode airing on May 26, 1990. But six months before that, The Simpsons had already moved on. After three seasons as part of Ullman's ensemble, Brooks developed the shorts into a half-hour animated sitcom that ended up becoming the then-burgeoning Fox network’s first big hit. Today, The Simpsons holds a number of Guinness World Records, including the one for longest-running sitcom. But, considering that they began their life on her show, did Ullman get a cut of the series’ success?

The short answer is: No.

In 1991, Ullman filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox alleging four counts of breach of contract. According to the Los Angeles Times, the 14-page complaint alleged that Ullman’s contract with Gracie Films (Brooks’s production company) entitled her to “five to 10 percent of the net receipts of the merchandising and other profits from products or programs based on spinoff characters, including animated characters, even if those characters were originated by others.” And since The Simpsons began on The Tracey Ullman Show, she argued that she should be entitled to those profits.

Merchandising was, of course, a key part of The Simpsons’s financial success. The trade news source Licensing Letter estimated that The Simpsons raked in about $750 million in merchandising sales in 1990—making the animated family the third most popular “characters” that year, right behind the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and New Kids on the Block. It was reported at the time that Ullman did not name Gracie Films in the suit, so as not to damage her relationship with Brooks.

More than a year later, on October 22, 1992, a Superior Court jury sided with Fox and rejected Ullman’s lawsuit, which would have netted her an estimated $2.25 million at the time. Brooks, who testified during the trial, argued that The Simpsons was created by Matt Groening, with no creative input from Ullman.

Though Ullman was reportedly out of the country at the time, her lawyer, Michael Bergman, told Variety that he was “very disappointed. I think the jury did their best, but it was a very complex case ... and the issues just got lost somewhere along the line.”

Meg Tilly is pretty odd and delightful in her YouTube tea sipping chats. But the bitch doesn't spill no T. She's a bit too Vancouver Island for me, or more like Salt Spring. She smells like spirulina. Honestly she was great in Bomb Girls and some actresses just have a presence that demands that WE have an opinion. Meg is like that too. Very interesting women. I can't tell if Meg looks good or not - she's written some well received books and she looks like a writer who drinks tea. But her Hollywood stories are a little weak. The Anne Bancroft rosary story would have been EPIC, if only Meg had shared just how batshit MAD Bancroft likely became. And even their lunch that she describes months after shooting - she's protecting Jane and Bancroft from their conniving Oscar campaign ways. Y'all know that Fonda and Bancroft would not truly enjoy the company of Meg Tilly as a person. Unfortunately.

Jennifer Tilly is hilarious in everything she does. She's not unlike Jennifer Coolidge. You either love her or you don't. Because what they do doesn't change much. They demand that we have an opinion.

Also Jenn Tilly was a creamy goddess bountiful delight until her late fifties. A beauty of coloring and contours. Who worked it just right. With no added or subtracted parts.

Creative chicks. 💜

[Quote] But the bitch doesn't spill no T

She spills that one of her recent co-stars in an indie made crew cry. She didn't name them but when asked in the comments about what it was like to work with Natasha Lyonne and Chloe Sevigny on Antibirth, Meg failed to answer that part of the question(s).

"Tilly is expected to get tens of millions of dollars from Simon's estate via new agreement reached with his estate.

Actress and poker pro Jennifer Tilly will continue to receive her piece of The Simpsons earnings through a new deal struck between the actress and the estate of her ex-husband and the animated show’s co-creator, Sam Simon, according to court documents obtained exclusively by RadarOnline.com.

According to the Jan. 2 order, Tilly would be entitled to 30 percent of net proceeds that Simon’s estate receives from Fox , which could reach tens of millions of dollars over her lifetime."

I thought she gave up poker - she only went into it because she had money to burn because of Sam Simon divorce.

But she lost A LOT and got out.

She could work if she wanted to - like a lot of actresses in their 50's and 60's. But she's got an enviable amount of money - so why fuck with all the shit you have to go through with execs and casting, etc?

Among all the great performances in Bullets Over Broadway, Jennifer Tilly is outstanding.

[quote] Gina Srignoli was one of the most annoying characters on Hill Street Blues

Not one bit. That was where I first became aware of Jennifer and she was funny and delightful. I can't prove it but years later I am almost certain I recognized her in an old porno loop in some forgotten compilation that would have shortly preceded her work on Hill Street.

That was Dolly Sharp, not Jennifer.
