Ahead of election anyone else thinking about Abraham Lincoln?
Clearly, a great leader is needed at this time. Sadly, neither candidate seems to fit the bill. Maybe no one remotely qualified wants the job? I read Lincoln's 2nd inaugural speech, which is so poignant now given our extreme political and social divisiveness. Speaking about the outcome of the Civil War, Lincoln, an agnostic but a man of his time, considers the situation philosophically:
"The prayers of both could not be answered. That of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes."
It's really quite an interesting point of view to ponder. Abe, if you're out there give us a sign. Where is our great leader? Can we salvage one from the wreckage of this unprecedented shit storm?

Lincoln was followed by Andrew Johnson, the worst American President until Donald Trump. Jon Meacham spoke about Johnson on MSNBC last night, lots of interesting parallels I didn't know about. Johnson attempted to reverse a lot of the positive policies that Lincoln introduced. And like Trump, Johnson unleashed an army or white supremacists... but he was harshly rejected when Ulysses S. Grant comfortably defeated him in the next election. It started to give me hope.
But then I remembered that, unlike Trump, Johnson didn't have Vladimir Putin and Fox News assisting him.

Lincoln was also preceded by two historically ineffective presidents - Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan. Neither of his predecessors did anything of consequence to prevent the Civil War. You can't have everything. But one GREAT leader can nullify a lot of krap that comes along before and after.

Thomas Jefferson was amazing and he built a beautiful campus at UVA. The grounds are a thing of beauty. Those little rooms connected by those old mansions with the big rotunda in the center. Jefferson was a master architect.
