I live in a country where they are normal so no I do not miss them. In fact until this post I thought little about them.

I don't miss them as they never went away for me - the gym I used when going to work in person had open showers. The one I use now I'm working from home doesn't though.

Tends to be the case with open showers, that the guys in the gym you really want to see in them never use them, and the ones you really don't want to see are always in them.

Mid-80's, living, 22 years old, living in NYC, weekend summers I'd take the bus out to the beach in Long Island......around 4pm, sunburned and full of sand, the showers was packed. I was hot enough then that I often met someone and was able to hitch a free ride home... though stopping at their place first.

The big gym in West Hollywood before it got really gentrified and turned into a big chain used to have a full wet room setup. It was kind of like a maze of locker room to a large open shower area and across from that was a Jacuzzi and a steam room with a glass window. It was totally inside the men's locker room so most guys were completely naked or just a towel. It also has sunbathing on the roof, clothing very optional. I swear that place was like a bath house. They couldn't stop guys from having sex in the steam room. At one point they just gave up and put a little sticker on the glass window that looked like the international "No Smoking" sign but instead of a cigarette it had a red circle with a diagonal slash and 2 letter... I don't understand people who shit where they eat. I go to the gym to swim or work out. Then I sometimes take a sauna or use the whirlpool to speed muscle recovery and to prevent aches and pains. Follow that up with a shower and I'm on my merry way. I have zero interest in trolling a locker room or otherwise engaging in public sex in a place I return to on a very regular basis. And I'm no prude -- I'm a nasty, slutty whore from jump. I just don't throw that shit out there in a gym.

It's not like full on sex usually. If you can have a tough work out, a nice steam, crank a quick load out with another hot guy quickly and then take a long hot shower afterwards you feel like a million buck. What's not to like. In high school, we weren't allowed to to wear our shorts in the shower. If we were caught trying to skip the showers, the punishment was to stay in the showers until everyone else in the locker room was finished showering. The only time I broke the rule was after swim, and I would take my trunks off in the shower to rinse the chlorine out.

Freshman in college dorm was "gang" showers. My room was just across the hall from one of the doors to the large bathroom. There were about 15 urinals, 8-9 stalls, and 10 sinks in the big room. The entrance to the showers had a large, heavy metal door, an anteroom to change, and then the eight shower heads. Both doors to the hall squealed when opened and closed, unless you slowly, carefully opened and closed them. The big door to the anteroom and showers groaned when opened and closed.

First semester, I was oblivious to the whole situation with gang showers. I remember having walked into the bathroom in the middle of one night to pee and hearing a couple showers running, but nothing registered. At home over winter break, a friend of mine who attended another university told me that guys hooked up in the showers at his school. Spring semester I paid attention. Sure enough, I started to notice a few guys taking showers very late. I was too young to drink at a bar, but realized that this happened not too long after the uptown bars closed. One Saturday night, I screwed up the courage to take a shower around 3AM. Bingo! I had finished rinsing off when a guy I had crushed on since move-in day walked into the shower. We exchanged nods of recognition. I soaped up again and kept an eye on him through the suds.
