I didn't know Fred Astaire was married twice.
I knew he married later in life but just learned today he was married for about 20 years to a beautiful woman, they had two kids together. She died at age 46 of lung cancer.
I watched Roberta (1935) on TCM today and have been reading about the cast members. It also featured Randolph Scott, Irene Dunne, and Ginger Rogers. A really fun film currently on On Demand.
The photo is of Fred and his sister Adele circa 1905.

His first wife died too young, of cancer at 46, and left him to finish raising two kids and a stepson. The second wife had been a top professional jockey, he asked her to retire from racing because it was so fucking dangerous (it is), and she did. He was forty-five years older than her, and no, they didn't have any kids, but both loved horses. Robyn Smith Astaire is still with us.
I never heard of him being involved with a man, and honestly, I can't imagine him having sex with anyone.

He really loved his first wife. The second wife was a greedy grasping bitch

It should be illegal for ghosts to tap dance.

His first wife was a severe stutterer and very possessive of Fred.
She's the reason why Fred and Ginger never kissed in any of their films.
She would often visit the set and park herself in a chair to watch the filming and keep an eye on Fred.

That's interesting, R8. You're right, I don't remember Fred kissing anyone in his films. I've always thought of him as asexual, probably because of that.

But he’s gay, right?
Actually he’s seems like a loner, perennial bachelor-—kind of like Joe Mantello’s character in Hollywood.

Well, one of Astaire's real-life friends said something like "He wasn't gay, he wasn't straight, he was just sort of neuter.".
He really did come off as asexual, even when the first wife was no longer around to keep an eye on him.

Motherfucker could dance - but goddman. Forget a fivehead, Astaire had a SIXhead. What a noggin! Is a big forehead like a big nose? (hung?)

Fred reminds me in looks and demeanor of my grandpa, who also had that kind of asexual vibe. But clearly I am here, so he wasn't.
